Measuring
\nthe earth in an enormous ease,<\/span><\/p>\n

Immense
\nHimaloy<\/span> dwells1<\/sup> and in the moan<\/span><\/p>\n

Of
\neastern ocean and in western floods<\/span><\/p>\n

Plunges
\nhis giant sides. Him once the hills<\/span><\/p>\n

Imagined
\nas the mighty calf of Earth<\/span><\/p>\n

When
\nthe wideness milked her udders; gems brilliant-rayed<\/span><\/p>\n

Were
\nborn and herbs on every mountain marge<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

So
\nin his infinite riches is he dressed,<\/span><\/p>\n

Not
\nall his snows can slay his opulence,<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nthough they chill the feet of heaven, her sons<\/span><\/p>\n

Forget
\nthat fault mid2<\/sup> all his crowding gifts,<\/span><\/p>\n

As
\nfaints in luminous floods the gloomy mark<\/span><\/p>\n

On
\nthe moon’s argent disc; they choose his vales<\/span><\/p>\n

For
\nplayground, his hill-peaks for divine homes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brightness
\nof minerals on his rocks is spread<\/span><\/p>\n

Which
\nto the Apsaras<\/span> give adorning hues<\/span><\/p>\n

In
\ntheir love-sports and in their dances; flung<\/span><\/p>\n

On
\nthe split clouds in their brilliant colours<\/span> ranged,<\/span><\/p>\n

Like
\nan untimely sunset’s glories live.<\/span><\/p>\n

Far
\ndown the clouds droop to his girdle-waist;<\/span><\/p>\n

Then
\nby the low-hung plateaus’ coolness drawn<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nsiddhas<\/span> in soft shade repose, but flee<\/span><\/p>\n

Soon
\nupward by wild driving rain distressed<\/span><\/p>\n

To
\nsummits splendid in the veilless<\/span> sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nhunter seeks for traces on his sides,<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nthough their reddened footprints are expunged<\/span><\/p>\n

By
\nthe new-falling snows, yet can he find<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\npath his prey the mighty lions go;<\/span><\/p>\n

For,
\nit is told, pearls from slain elephants<\/span><\/p>\n

Are clotted, fallen from their hollow claws, <\/span><\/p>\n

And tell their dangerous passage. When he rests <\/span><\/p>\n

Tired with the chase and bares to winds his brow, <\/span><\/p>\n

They come, fay<\/span>-breezes dancing on the slopes,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Shaking the cedars on Himaloy’s<\/span> breast, <\/span><\/p>\n

Scattering the peacock’s gorgeous-plumed attire, <\/span><\/p>\n

And with spray of Ganges’ cascades on their wings <\/span><\/p>\n

Sprinkling his hair. He makes the grottoed<\/span>
\nglens <\/span><\/p>\n

His chambers of desire and in the night <\/span><\/p>\n

When the strong forest-wanderer is lain <\/span><\/p>\n

Twined with his love, marrying with hers his sighs, <\/span><\/p>\n

The luminous herbs from the dim banks around <\/span><\/p>\n

Strange1<\/sup> oilless<\/span> lamps, give light
\nto see his joy. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nor only earthly footsteps tread the grass, <\/span><\/p>\n

Or mortal love finds there its happy scenes. <\/span><\/p>\n

The birch-leaves of the hills love-pages are;<\/span><\/p>\n

Like spots of age upon the tusky<\/span> kings, <\/span><\/p>\n

In ink of liquid metals letters strange <\/span><\/p>\n

Make crimson signs, pages where passion burns <\/span><\/p>\n

And divine Circes pen heart-moving things. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Kinnars<\/span> wander singing in his glades <\/span><\/p>\n

He fills the hollows of his bamboo trees2 <\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

With the wind rising from his deep ravines, <\/span><\/p>\n

And with a moaning and melodious sound <\/span><\/p>\n

Breathes from his rocky mouths as if he meant <\/span><\/p>\n

To flute,3<\/sup> time-giver to their minstrelsies. <\/span><\/p>\n

The delicate heels of the maned<\/span> Kinnari<\/span> <\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Are by his frosted slabs of snow distressed, <\/span><\/p>\n

Yet for her burden of breasts and heavy hips <\/span><\/p>\n

Can change not her slow motion’s swaying grace <\/span><\/p>\n

To escape the biting pathway’s chill unease. <\/span><\/p>\n

She too in grottoed<\/span> caverns lies embraced. <\/span><\/p>\n

When from her limbs is plucked the raiment fine <\/span><\/p>\n

Of the Kinnar’s<\/span> shame-fast love, then hanging
\ncome <\/span><\/p>\n

The concave clouds across the grotto doors <\/span><\/p>\n

And make chance curtains against mortal eyes, <\/span><\/p>\n

Shielding the naked goddess from our sight. <\/span><\/p>\n

The elephant-herds there wander: resinous trees <\/span><\/p>\n

Shaken and rubbed by their afflicting brows <\/span><\/p>\n

Loose down their odorous tears in creamy drops;<\/span><\/p>\n

The winds upon the plateaus burdened pant <\/span><\/p>\n

And make of all the air a scented dream. <\/span><\/p>\n

The yaks are there; they lift their bushy tails <\/span><\/p>\n

And in their lashings scatter gleamings<\/span> white
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

As moonbeams shed upon the sleeping hills:<\/span><\/p>\n

Brightly they seem to fan the mountain king. <\/span><\/p>\n

He hides in his deep caves the hunted night <\/span><\/p>\n

Fearful of the day’s brilliant eyes. His peaks <\/span><\/p>\n

Seem to outpeer<\/span> the lower-circling sun, <\/span><\/p>\n

Which sends its upward beams as if to wake <\/span><\/p>\n

Immortal lilies in his tarns unplucked<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

By the seven^ sages in their starry march.<\/span><\/p>\n

Such is Himaloy’s<\/span> greatness, such his
\nstrength<\/span><\/p>\n

That seems to uplift to heaven the earth. He bears<\/span><\/p>\n

The honey Soma plant upon his heights,<\/span><\/p>\n

Of Godward<\/span> symbols the exalted source.<\/span><\/p>\n

He by the Master of sacrifice was crowned<\/span><\/p>\n

The ancient monarch of a million hills.<\/span><\/p>\n

In equal rites he to his giant bed<\/span><\/p>\n

The mind-born child of the world-fathers bore.<\/span><\/p>\n

The earthly comrade and the help fellow<\/span><\/p>\n

Of Meru<\/span> their sublime celestial home,<\/span><\/p>\n

Stable of soul, to make a stable race<\/span><\/p>\n

Mena<\/span><\/span> he wed whose wisdom seers adored.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their joy of love was like themselves immense,<\/span><\/p>\n

And in the wide felicitous lapse of time<\/span><\/p>\n

Its long and puissant ecstasy bore fruit;<\/span><\/p>\n

Bearing the banner of her unchanged youth <\/span><\/p>\n

And beauty to charmed motherhood she crossed. <\/span><\/p>\n

Mainac<\/span><\/span> she bore, the guest of the deep seas, <\/span><\/p>\n

Upon whose peaks the serpent women play, <\/span><\/p>\n

Their jewelled<\/span> tresses glittering through the
\ngloom, <\/span><\/p>\n

Race of a cavernous and monstrous world;<\/span><\/p>\n

There fled when Indra<\/span> tore the mountains’
\nwings, <\/span><\/p>\n

His divine essence bore no cruel sign,1 <\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

Nor felt the anguish of the thunder’s scars.2 <\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

Next to a nobler load her womb save place;<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Nor Daksha’s<\/span> daughter, Shiva’s wife, the Lord
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Of Being, in her angry will who left <\/span><\/p>\n

Her body lifeless3<\/sup> in her father’s hall, <\/span><\/p>\n

Sought in their mountain home a happier birth, <\/span><\/p>\n

And by her in a trance profound of joy <\/span><\/p>\n

Conceived was born of strong4<\/sup> Himaloy’s<\/span>
\nseed. <\/span><\/p>\n

Out of the soul unseen the splendid child <\/span><\/p>\n

Came like success with daring for its sire \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And for its mother clear-eyed thought sublime. <\/span><\/p>\n

Then were the regions subtle with delight, <\/span><\/p>\n

Soft, pure, from cloud and stain; then heaven’s shells <\/span><\/p>\n

Blew sweetly, flowery rain came drifting down, <\/span><\/p>\n

Earth answered to the rapture of the skies <\/span><\/p>\n

And all her moving and unmoving life <\/span><\/p>\n

Felt happiness because the Bride was born. <\/span><\/p>\n

So the fair mother by this daughter shone <\/span><\/p>\n

So that new beauty radiated its beams <\/span><\/p>\n

As if a land of lapis lazuli <\/span><\/p>\n

Torn by the thunder’s voice shot suddenly forth <\/span><\/p>\n

A jewelled<\/span> sprouting from the mother bed. <\/span><\/p>\n

Parvati<\/span><\/span> was she called the mountain’s child, <\/span><\/p>\n

When love to love cried answer in her house <\/span><\/p>\n

And to that sound she turned her lovely face, <\/span><\/p>\n

But afterdays<\/span> the great maternal name <\/span><\/p>\n

Of Uma<\/span> gave. On her as fair she grew <\/span><\/p>\n

Her father banqueted his sateless<\/span> look, <\/span><\/p>\n

He felt himself a lamp fulfilled in light, <\/span><\/p>\n

Like Heaven’s silent path by Ganges voiceful<\/span>
\nmade, <\/span><\/p>\n

Like6<\/sup> thought made glorious by a perfect word. <\/span><\/p>\n

Like bees that winging come upon the wind <\/span><\/p>\n

Among the infinite sweets of honeyed spring <\/span><\/p>\n

Drawn to the mango-flower’s delicious breast, <\/span><\/p>\n

All eyes sought her. Her little childlike form <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

‘ mark, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>2<\/sup> lightning’s bite. a<\/sup> soulless \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>4<\/sup> great \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>6<\/sup>

Increasing to new curves of loveliness,<\/span><\/p>\n

She grew like the moon’s arc from day to day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among her fair companions of delight<\/span><\/p>\n

She built frail walls of heavenly Ganges’ sands<\/span><\/p>\n

Or ran to seize the tossing ball or pleased<\/span><\/p>\n

With puppet children her maternal mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

Absorbed in play, the mother of the worlds.<\/span><\/p>\n

And easily too to her as if in play<\/span><\/p>\n

All sciences and wisdoms crowding came<\/span><\/p>\n

Out of her former life, like swans that haste<\/span><\/p>\n

In autumn to a sacred river’s shores;<\/span><\/p>\n

They started from her mind as grow at night<\/span><\/p>\n

Born from some luminous herb its glimmering rays.<\/span><\/p>\n

To her child-body youth, a charm, arrived<\/span><\/p>\n

Adorning every limb, a wine of joy<\/span><\/p>\n

To intoxicate the heart, the eyes that gazed,<\/span><\/p>\n

Shooting the arrows of love’s curving bow.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even as a painting grows beneath the hand<\/span><\/p>\n

Of a great master, as the lotus opens<\/span><\/p>\n

Its petals to the flatteries of the sun,<\/span><\/p>\n

So into perfect roundness grew her limbs<\/span><\/p>\n

And opened up sweet colour<\/span>, form and light.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her feet that threw at every step a rose<\/span><\/p>\n

Upon the earth, like reddened lilies seemed1<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

Moving2<\/sup> from spot to spot their petalled<\/span>
\nbloom;<\/span><\/p>\n

Her motion studied from the queenly swans <\/span><\/p>\n

Its3<\/sup> wanton swaying musically timed <\/span><\/p>\n

The sweet-voiced anklets’ murmurous<\/span> refrain. <\/span><\/p>\n

From moulded<\/span> knee to ankle the supreme <\/span><\/p>\n

Divinely lessening curve so lovely was, <\/span><\/p>\n

It looked as if on this alone were spent <\/span><\/p>\n

All her Creator’s cunning and well the rest <\/span><\/p>\n

Might tax his labour<\/span> to build half such
\ngrace, <\/span><\/p>\n

Yet was that miracle accomplished. Soft<\/span><\/p>\n

1<\/span><\/sup> Her feet limned a red rose at every step <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 <\/span>On the enamoured<\/span>
\nearth; like magic flowers<\/span><\/p>\n

Were without parallel in Nature’s work. <\/span><\/p>\n

The greatness of her hips on which life’s girdle <\/span><\/p>\n

Had found its ample rest deserved already <\/span><\/p>\n

The lap of divine love where she alone <\/span><\/p>\n

Might hope one day embosomed by god to lie. <\/span><\/p>\n

Deep was her navel’s hollow where wound in <\/span><\/p>\n

Above her1<\/sup> raiment’s knot that tender line <\/span><\/p>\n

Of down as slight as the dark ray shot up <\/span><\/p>\n

From the blue jewel central in her zone. <\/span><\/p>\n

Her waist was like an altar’s middle small <\/span><\/p>\n

And there the triple stair of love was built. <\/span><\/p>\n

Twin breasts large, lovely pale with darkened paps<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

That could not allow the slender lotus thread <\/span><\/p>\n

A passage, on whose either side there waited <\/span><\/p>\n

Softer than delicatest<\/span> flowers the arms <\/span><\/p>\n

Which Love victorious in defeat would find <\/span><\/p>\n

His chains to bind down the Eternal’s<\/span> neck. <\/span><\/p>\n

Her throat adorned the necklace which it wore;<\/span><\/p>\n

Its sweep and undulation to the breast <\/span><\/p>\n

Outmatched the gleaming roundness of its gems. <\/span><\/p>\n

Above all this her marvellous<\/span> face where met <\/span><\/p>\n

The golden mother of beauty and delight <\/span><\/p>\n

At once the graces of her lotus throne <\/span><\/p>\n

And the soft lashes of the moon. The smile <\/span><\/p>\n

Parting the rosy sweetness of her lips <\/span><\/p>\n

Like a white flower across a ruddy leaf <\/span><\/p>\n

Or pearls that sever lines of coral. Noble <\/span><\/p>\n

Her speech dropped nectar from a liquid voice <\/span><\/p>\n

To which the co\u00efl\u2019s<\/span> call seemed rude and
\nharsh <\/span><\/p>\n

And sob of smitten lyres a tuneless sound. <\/span><\/p>\n

She had exchanged with the wild woodland deer <\/span><\/p>\n

The startled glance of her long lovely eyes <\/span><\/p>\n

Fluttering like a blue lotus in the wind. <\/span><\/p>\n

The pencilled<\/span> long line of her arching brows <\/span><\/p>\n

Made vain the beauty of Love’s bow. Her hair’s <\/span><\/p>\n

Tossed masses put voluptuously to shame <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThe mane of lions and the drift of clouds. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tTo see1<\/sup> all beauty in a little space <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHe who created all this wondrous world <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHad fashioned only her. Throned in her limbs <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAll possibilities of loveliness <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHave crowded to their fair attractive seat <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAnd now the artist eyes that scan all things <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tSaw every symbol and sweet parallel <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOf beauty only realised in her. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThen was he satisfied and loved his work. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThe sages ranging at their will the stars <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tSaw her and knew that this indeed was she <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWho must become by love the beautiful half <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOf the fair body of the Lord and all <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHis heart. This from the seers of future things <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHer father heard and his high hope renounced <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAll other but the greatest for her spouse. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tNor dared yet to anticipate the divine mind <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHe dared not, but remained like a great soul <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tCurbing the impatience of its godlike hopes, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThe silent sentinel of its destined hour. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tPrepared by Time for her approaching Lord <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tShe waited like a sacrifice for the fire. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tBut he, the spirit of the world, forsaken <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tBy that first body of the mother of all, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tNor to her second birth yet wed,2<\/sup> remained3 <\/sup>
\n\t\t<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAlone and passionless and unespoused,4 <\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThe Master of the animal life absorbed <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tIn dreamings, wandering with his demon hordes <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tDesireless in the blind desire of things. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAt length he ceased; like sculptured marble still <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tTo meditation was his spirit turned, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tClothed in the skins of beasts, with ashes smeared<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHe sat a silent shape upon the hills. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tBelow him curved Himadri’s slope; a soil <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWith fragrance of the musk deer odorous <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWas round him, where the awful splendour mused <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOf Ganges, softly murmuring their chants <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOn the oil-filled slabs among the resinous herbs <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHis grisly hosts sat down, their bodies stained <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWith mineral unguents, bark upon their limbs;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tIll-shaped they were and their tremendous hands <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAround their ears had wreathed the hill-side’s flowers. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOn the white rocks compact of frozen snow, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThe great bull voicing loud immortal pride <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tPawed with his hoof the argent soil to dust, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAlarmed the bisons fled his gaze, he bellowed <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tImpatient of the mountain lion’s roar. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tConcentrating his world-vast energies <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAmid them built his daily form of fire,1 <\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHe who gives all austerities their fruit, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tIn what impenetrable and deep desire ? <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAnd though to him the worship even of gods <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tIs negligible, worship the mountain gave <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAnd gave his daughter the Great Soul to serve. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAnd though to remote trance near beauty is <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tA danger, the Great Soul accepted her. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tSurrounded by all sweetness in the world <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHe can be passionless who is creation’s king.2 <\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tShe brought him daily offering of flowers <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAnd holy water morn and noon and eve <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAnd swept the altar of the divine fire <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAnd heaped his altar seat of sacred grass, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThen bending over his feet her falling locks, <\/span><\/p>\n
