\nThe Symbolism of Colours<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/b><\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nThe significances of the colours below are based upon
\nthe works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nThe significances given here are general indications only, for the meaning of a colour may vary,
\nas Sri Aurobindo noted, "with the field, the
\ncombinations, the character and shades of the
\ncolour, the play of forces". Moreover, a colour
\nmay have several meanings, since there is
\nmore than one order of things that colours
\nindicate. "There is an order of significances",
\nSri Aurobindo observed, "in which they indicate
\nvarious psychological dynamisms, e.g., faith,
\nlove, protection, etc. There is another order of
\nsignificances in which they indicate the aura or
\nthe activity of divine beings, Krishna, Mahakali,
\nRadha or else of other superhuman beings." And
\nthere are other orders as well. In the Mother’s
\nflower-names, the colours usually indicate a plane
\nof consciousness or part of the being, or, more
\naccurately, the main forces corresponding to a
\nplane of consciousness or part of the being. The
\ncolour red, for example, often indicates the forces
\nof the physical plane of consciousness or physical
\npart of the being; accordingly, the significance of
\nthe red zinnia is Physical endurance.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\nOf the relationship between colour and light,
\nSri Aurobindo commented: "Colour and light
\nare always close to each other – colour being
\nmore indicative, light more dynamic. Colour
\nincandescent becomes light."<\/font><\/p>\n

\nW<\/b>HITE. The Divine Consciousness; the Mothers
\nlight; purity; integrality.
\nWhite is the divine power of purity. White
\nlight is the Mother’s light, the light of the
\nDivine Consciousness in its essence. In this
\nwhite light all other lights are contained and
\nfrom it they can be manifested; for this reason
\nwhite also indicates integrality, completeness,
\ntotality \u2014 especially the integrality of the being
\nin all its parts, from the physical being to the
\ntrue self. The adjective "integral" appears in
\nthe significances of many white flowers; the
\nwhite zinnia, for example, is named Integral
\nendurance and signifies endurance in all the
\nparts of the being.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nG<\/b>OLD.<\/b> The divine Truth; the supramental Truth-
\nConsciousness; the Supramental or Supermind.
\nGold indicates the divine Truth. Golden light
\nis the light of the divine Truth on the higher
\nplanes above the ordinary mind \u2014 a light
\nsupramental in origin. The golden sun is the
\nsymbol of the Divine Light and Truth and of
\nthe Supermind.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nG<\/b>OLDEN YELLOW. The light of the Truth in the
\nmind.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nY<\/b>ELLOW. The mind; the thinking mind.<\/font><\/p>\n

Yellow is the characteristic colour of mind,
\nespecially the thinking mind, the intellect.
\n<\/b>Its
\n<\/b>shades indicate different intensities of mental
\nlight. Yellow is the light of mind growing
\nbrighter as one goes higher till it meets the
\ngolden light of the Divine Truth.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nPALE BLUE. Higher ranges of mind.<\/font><\/p>\n

Pale blue is the colour of the higher ranges
\nof mind up to the Intuition; above it, it begins
\nto become golden with the supramental light.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nP<\/b>ALE WHITISH BLUE. Sri Aurobindo’s light; Sri
\nKrishna’s light.<\/font><\/p>\n

A whitish blue like moonlight is known as Sri
\nAurobindo’s light or Sri Krishna’s light. There<\/font>
\nare different Krishna lights, depending on
\nthe plane in which the light manifests.
\nPale diamond blue is Krishna’s light in the
\novermind, lavender blue in the intuitive
\nmind, a deeper blue in the mind, and so on.
\nBlue is also Radha’s colour.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nL<\/b>AVENDER BLUE. Devotion.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nD<\/b>EEP BLUE. The physical mind; mental power
\nin the physical.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nP<\/b>INK. The psychic.<\/font><\/p>\n

Pink or pale rose is the characteristic colour
\nof the psychic. Pink, especially pink mixed
\nwith lavender, mauve or pale purple, can
\nalso indicate the emotional vital.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nR<\/b>OSE.<\/b> Psychic love.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nG<\/b>REEN.<\/b> Vital strength; energy, generosity, self-
\ngiving; the emotional life-force; the
\n<\/b>emotional
\n<\/b>vital; the emotions.<\/font><\/p>\n

A vital energy of work and action, green
\nis very usually associated with Life and a
\ngenerous emanation or action of forces –
\noften of the emotional life-force. Green light
\ncan signify various things according to the
\ncontext \u2014 in the emotional vital it is the
\ncolour of a certain form of emotional
\ngenerosity, in the vital proper an activity with
\nvital abundance or vital generosity behind it;<\/font><\/p>\n

in the vital physical it signifies a force of
\nhealth. Green is the colour of the emotional
\nvital and of the emotions.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nL<\/b>AVENDER. The vital, especially the higher vital
\nor emotional vital.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nM<\/b>AUVE. The vital.<\/font><\/p>\n

Mauve is a colour of the vital, light mauve
\ntending to indicate the higher vital or
\nemotional vital, deep mauve the vital proper.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nV<\/b>IOLET. The vital; vital power; protection; Divine Compassion; Divine Grace.
\nViolet is a colour of the vital plane, dark
\nviolet indicating vital power. Violet is also
\n* the colour of protection and of benevolence
\nor compassion, but more vividly of the Divine
\nGrace; it is the light of the Divine Grace and
\nCompassion.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nP<\/b>URPLE. The vital; the vital force; vital power.
\nPurple is a characteristic colour of the vital.
\nIt is the colour of the vital life-force and of
\nvital power. Dark purple may indicate the
\nlower vital.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nP<\/b>URPLE RED. The vital consciousness; the vital
\nlife-force.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nR<\/b>ED. The physical; the material world.
\nRed is the colour of the physical and of
\nthe material world. Darker shades of red,
\nhowever, may also indicate some part of
\nthe vital.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nD<\/b>EEP RED. Divine Love.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nC<\/b>RIMSON. Love manifested in the physical.
\nCrimson light indicates the manifestation
\nof love in the material atmosphere or in the
\nvital and physical together.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nO<\/b>RANGE.<\/b> The Supramental in the physical; the
\nsupramental physical light; occult knowledge.
\nOrange or red-gold or golden red is the light
\nof the Supramental in the physical, the light
\nof Divine Truth in the physical. Orange is
\nalso the colour of occult knowledge
\n<\/b>or
\n<\/b>occult
\n<\/b>experience.<\/font><\/p>\n

\nB<\/b>LACK. Obscurity, chaos, blindness, ignorance.<\/font><\/p>\n
