\n\tMeasuring the earth in an

\n\tImmense Himaloy dwells and in
\n\tthe moan <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tOf western waters and in eastern
\n\tfloods <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tPlunges his hidden spurs. Such
\n\tis his strength1 <\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHigh-piled or thousand-crested
\n\tis his look <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThat with the scaling greatness
\n\tof his peaks <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHe seems to uplift to heaven our
\n\tprostrate soil. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHe mounts from the green luxury
\n\tof his vales, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAmbitious of the skies; naked
\n\tand lost <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe virgin chill immensity of
\n\tsnow <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tCovers the breathless spirit of
\n\this heights. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tTo snows his savage pines
\n\taspire; the birch <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAnd all the hardy brotherhood
\n\twhich climb <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAgainst the angry muttering of
\n\tthe winds, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tChallenge the dangerous air in
\n\twhich they h’ve. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHe is sated with the silence of
\n\tthe stars: <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tLower he dips into life’s
\n\tbeauty, far <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tBelow he hears the cascades, now
\n\the clothes <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHis rugged sides the gentle

\n\tWith soft grass and the gold and

\n\tHolding upon her breast the

\n\tOver lakes of mighty sleep,

\n\tIn such warm infinite riches is

\n\tHis fire of life from his cold

\n\tThe great snows cannot slay its

\n\tWith spray from Ganges’ cascades

\n\tSprinkling their coolness on his

\n\tThe grottoed glens his chambers

\n\tHe has packed their dumbness
\n\twith his passionate bliss;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tStone witnesses of ecstasy they

\n\tAnd wonderful luminous herbs
\n\tfrom night’s dim banks <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tGive light to see the joy those
\n\tthrilled rocks keep <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWhen the strong forest-wanderer

\n\tTwined with his love, marrying
\n\twith hers his sighs, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tMoved to desire in their stony

\n\tNor only human footsteps tread

\n\tUpon his slopes, nor only mortal

\n\tIn the weird moonlight pouring

\n\tA wandering choir, a flash of

\n\tGo sweeping sometimes they and

\n\tThe Kinnar passes singing in his

\n\tTo escape the biting pathway’s
\n\tchill unease<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tShe is forbidden: she must not
\n\tbreak the grace<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tOf her slow1<\/sup> motion’s
\n\ttardy rich appeal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tShe too in grottoed caverns lies
\n\tembraced,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tForced from the shame-fast
\n\tsweetness of her limbs<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe subtle raiment leaves her
\n\tfainting hands<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tTo give her tremulous beauty to
\n\tthe gaze<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tOf her eternal lover. But thick
\n\tclouds<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tStoop hastily bowed to the rocky

\n\tAnd hang chance curtains against

\n\tOf godward symbols the exalted

\n\tThe mystic Soma-plant upon his

\n\tHe by the Father of sacrifice

\n\tThe happy tumult of her being
\n\ttossed<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tIn long and puissant ecstasies
\n\tbore fruit,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tBearing the banner of her
\n\tunchanged youth<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAnd beauty to charmed motherhood
\n\tshe crossed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tMainac she bore the guest of the
\n\tdeep seas,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tUpon whose peaks the
\n\tserpent-women play, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tRace of a cavernous and
\n\tmonstrous world,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWith strange eyes gleaming past
\n\tthe glaucous wave,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAnd jewelled tresses glittering
\n\tthrough the foam. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tNot that his natural air who
\n\tgreat had grown <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAmid the brilliant perils of the
\n\tsun, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tFrom Indra tearing the great
\n\tmountains’ wings <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWith which they soared against
\n\tthe threatened sky, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tBelow the slippery fields the
\n\tfugitive sank, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHis sheltered essence bore no
\n\tcruel sign, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tNor felt the anguish of the
\n\theavenly scars. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThey disappointed of that first1<\/sup>
\n\tdesire <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tMixed in a greater2<\/sup>
\n\tjoy. It took not earth <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tFor narrow base, but forced the
\n\theavens down <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tInto their passion-trance
\n\tclasped on the couch <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tCalm and stupendous of the
\n\tsnow-cold heights. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThen to a nobler load her womb

\n\tFor Daksha’s daughter, Shiva’s

\n\tIn that proud sacrifice and

\n\t\tAnd easily out of that
\n\t\tearlier time<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAll sciences and wisdoms
\n\t\tcrowding came<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tInto her growing thoughts
\n\t\tlike swans that haste<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tIn autumn to a sacred
\n\t\triver’s shores.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThey started from her soul
\n\t\tas grow at night<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tBorn from some luminous herb
\n\t\tits glimmering rays.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHer mind, her limbs betrayed
\n\t\tthemselves divine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThus she prepared her spirit
\n\t\tfor mighty life,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWandering at will in freedom
\n\t\tlike a deer<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOn Nature’s summits, in

\n\t\tAbsorbed in play, the Mother

\n\t\tShot the fine arrows of
\n\t\tLove’s curving bow.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHer forms into a perfect
\n\t\troundness grew <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAnd opened up sweet colour,
\n\t\tgrace and light. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tSo might a painting grow
\n\t\tbeneath the hand <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOf some great master, so a
\n\t\tlotus opens <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tIts bosom to the splendour
\n\t\tof the sun. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOn the enamoured earth at
\n\t\tevery step her feet <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThrew a red rose, like magic
\n\t\tflowers they went <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tMoving from spot to spot
\n\t\ttheir petalled bloom. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHer motion from the queenly
\n\t\tswans had learned <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tIts wanton swayings;
\n\t\tmusically it timed <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tIn which the lotus found its
\n\t\thuman bloom<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tIn the soft lustres of the
\n\t\tmoon. <\/b>Her smile<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tParted the rosy sweetness of
\n\t\ther lips<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tLike candid pearls severing
\n\t\tsoft coral lines<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOr a white flower across a
\n\t\truddy leaf.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHer speech dropped nectar
\n\t\tfrom a liquid voice<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tTo which the coil’s call
\n\t\tseemed rude and harsh<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWeary of scattering

\n\t\tHad hastened to their fair
\n\t\tattractive seats,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAnd now the artist eyes that
\n\t\tscan all things<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tSaw every symbol and sweet
\n\t\tparallel<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOf beauty only realised in
\n\t\ther.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThen was he satisfied and
\n\t\tloved his work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThe2<\/sup> sages
\n\t\tranging at their will the stars<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tSaw her and knew that this
\n\t\tindeed was she<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWho must
\n\t\tbecome by love the beautiful half<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOf the Almighty’s body and
\n\t\tbe all <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHis heart. This from earth’s
\n\t\tseers of future things <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHimaloy heard and his proud
\n\t\thopes contemned <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAll other than the greatest
\n\t\tfor her spouse. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tYet dared he not provoke
\n\t\tthat dangerous boon <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAnticipating its unwakened
\n\t\thour, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tBut seated in the grandeur

\n\t\tLike a great soul curbing
\n\t\tits giant hopes, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tA silent sentinel of

\n\t\tslope; a soil <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWith fragrance of the
\n\t\tmusk-deer odorous |         
\n\t\t<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWas round, and there the
\n\t\tawful Splendour mused. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tMid cedars sprinkled with
\n\t\tthe sacred dew <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOf Ganges, softly murmuring
\n\t\ttheir chants <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tIn streams subdued the
\n\t\tKinnar minstrels sang. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWhere oil-filled slabs were
\n\t\tclothed in resinous herbs, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHis grisly hosts sat down,
\n\t\ttheir bodies stained <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWith mineral unguents; bark
\n\t\ttheir ill-shaped limbs <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tClad….1<\/sup><\/i>
\n\t\tand their tremendous hands <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAround their ears had
\n\t\twreathed the hillside’s flowers. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tOn the white rocks compact

\n\t\tHis great bull voicing loud
\n\t\timmortal pride <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tPawed with his hoof the
\n\t\targent soil to dust. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tAlarmed the bisons fled his
\n\t\tgaze; he bellowed <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tImpatient of the mountain
\n\t\tlion’s roar. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tConcentrating his world-vast
\n\t\tenergies, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tHe who gives all austerities
\n\t\ttheir fruits <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tBuilt daily his eternal
\n\t\tshape of flame, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tIn what impenetrable and
\n\t\tdeep desire ? <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tThe worship even of gods he
\n\t\treckons not <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tWho on no creature leans;
\n\t\tyet worship still <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\tTo satisfy his awe the
