All who<br \/>\nseek Thee with ardour should understand that Thou art<br \/>\nthere whenever there is need of Thee; and if they<br \/>\ncould have the supreme faith to give up seeking<br \/>\nThee, but&nbsp; rather to await Thee, at each moment putting<br \/>\nthem selves integrally at Thy service. And in this simplicity lies the greatest power,<br \/>\nthe power which is least mixed and least gives rise: &nbsp;to harmful reactions. The power of the vital should<br \/>\n&nbsp;be mistrusted, it is a tempter on the path of the work,<br \/>\n&nbsp;and there is always a risk of falling into its trap, for it<br \/>\ngives you the taste of immediate results; and, in our<br \/>\n&nbsp;first eagerness to do the work well, we let ourselves<br \/>\n&nbsp;be carried away to make use of this power. But&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;very soon it deflects all our action from the right course and introduces a seed of illusion and death into what we do.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Simplicity, simplicity! Then, in that<br \/>\nperfect peace and serenity, I unite my will to Thine,<br \/>\nand in that integral silence I listen to Thy<br \/>\ntruth and hear its expression. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">It is by becoming conscious of Thy will and identifying ours with Thine that there is<br \/>\nfound the secret of true liberty and all-puissance,<br \/>\nthe secret of&nbsp; the regeneration of forces and the<br \/>\ntransfiguration of the being, <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">To be constantly and integrally at one with<br \/>\nThee is to have the assurance that we shall overcome&nbsp; every obstacle and triumph over all<br \/>\ndifficulties, both within and without, <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">O Lord, Lord, a boundless joy fills my heart songs of gladness surge through my head in marvellous&nbsp; waves, and in the full confidence of Thy<br \/>\ncertain&nbsp; triumph, I find a sovereign Peace and an invincible Power. Thou fillest my being, Thou animatest<br \/>\nit,&nbsp; Thou settest in motion its hidden springs, Thou illuminest its understanding. Thou intensifiest<br \/>\nits life. Thou increasest tenfold its love; and I in&nbsp; longer know whether the universe is I or I the universe, whether Thou art in me or I in Thee&nbsp; Thou alone art and all is Thou; and the streams<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Sing, O lands, sing, O peoples, sing, O men, The Divine Harmony Is there.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 14<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a name=\"June_15,_1913\"><i>June<\/i> 15, 1913<\/a> <i>&nbsp;<\/i><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">EVEN he who might have arrived at perfect contemplation<br \/>\nin silence and solitude, could only have done so by extracting himself from his body,<br \/>\n&nbsp;by making an abstraction of himself; and thus the<br \/>\nsubstance of which the body is constituted would<br \/>\nremain as impure, as imperfect as before, since he<br \/>\nwould have abandoned it to itself; by a misguided mysticism, by the attraction of supraphysical splendours,&nbsp;<br \/>\nby the egoistic desire of being united with<br \/>\nThee for his personal satisfaction, he would have<br \/>\nturned his back upon the reason of his earthly existence, he would have refused cowardlike to accomplish&nbsp;<br \/>\nhis mission to redeem and purify Matter. To<br \/>\nknow that a part of our being is perfectly pure, to<br \/>\ncommune with that purity, to be identified with it,<br \/>\ncan be useful only if we subsequently utilise this<br \/>\nknowledge for hastening the earthly transfiguration,<br \/>\nfor accomplishing Thy sublime work. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<b><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a name=\"June_17,_1913\">June 17, 1913<\/a><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">GRANT, O Lord that I may be like a fire that<br \/>\nillumines and warms, like a fountain that takes away thirst, like a tree that<br \/>\nshelters and protects&#8230; men are so unhappy, so ignorant, they need so much to<br \/>\nbe helped.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;Page &#8211; 15<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">My confidence in Thee, my inner certitude grow<br \/>\nfrom day to day; and from day to day also I feel<br \/>\nThy love more living in my heart. Why do men flee from these<br \/>\nboons as though they fear them? What a strange<br \/>\nthing is ignorance, that source of all suffering! True Light, Sublime Love, Divine Master<br \/>\nwho art the source of our light and of our living,<br \/>\nour guide and our protector, the Soul of <i>out<br \/>\n<\/i>soul and the Life of our life, the Reason of our being, the supreme Knowledge, the immutable<br \/>\nPeace! <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 17<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a name=\"July_23,_1913\"><i>July<\/i> 23, 1913<\/a> <\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><b>O LORD, O<\/b> inconceivable Splendour, may Thy<br \/>\n\u2014    Beauty overflow the earth, may Thy Love be<br \/>\nkindled in all hearts and the reign of Thy Peace be<br \/>\nupon all. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">A chant grave and profound, smiling and subtle,<br \/>\nrises from my heart, and I do not know whether<br \/>\nthis chant travels from me towards Thee or from<br \/>\nThee towards me or whether Thou, I and the whole<br \/>\nuniverse are this marvellous chant of which I have<br \/>\nnow become conscious&#8230;&#8230;There is certainly no more Thou, nor I, nor any separate and distinct<br \/>\nuniverse: there is an immense harmony, sublime and<br \/>\ninfinite, which is everything and of which everything<br \/>\nwill become conscious, one day. It is the harmony<br \/>\nof limitless Love, Love victor over all suffering and<br \/>\nevery obscurity. Why strain and stiffen in the<br \/>\neffort to realise thy conception of the Truth? Be<br \/>\nmore supple, more confident. The only thing thou<br \/>\nhast to do is not to let thyself be troubled by anything.&nbsp;<br \/>\nTo torment oneself about doing good brings<br \/>\nabout as bad results as bad will. How trivial are these things,<br \/>\na thin smoke dissolved by a simple breath, vanishing<br \/>\nlike mirage before a single thought turned towards<br \/>\nThee. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Liberate those who live in this slavery, even as<br \/>\nthose who live in slavery to their passions. These obstacles&nbsp;<br \/>\non the path that leads towards Thee are at once<br \/>\nterrible and puerile; terrible to those who are still<br \/>\nsubjected to them, puerile to one who has passed<br \/>\nbeyond them. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">How inexpressible is the utter sense of relief, the<br \/>\ndelicious lightness we feel when we are disembarrassed&nbsp;<br \/>\nof all this anxious care for ourself, for our<br \/>\nlife, for our health, for our satisfactions and even for<br \/>\nour progress. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;text-indent:25px;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">This relief, this liberation Thou hast granted<br \/>\nto me, O Divine Master, Life of my life. Without<br \/>\nThee all is inert, brute or inconscient. Thou art all<br \/>\nthat illumines and enchants us, our sole reason for<br \/>\nexisting and our whole aim. The first<br \/>\nis that in my outer being, my surface consciousness,<br \/>\nI have no longer any feeling that I am in my own<br \/>\nhouse or the owner of anything at all. I am a stranger<br \/>\nin a foreign land, much more of a stranger here<br \/>\nthan in an open field among the trees; and I smile,<br \/>\nnow that I have learnt what I did not know before,<br \/>\nI smile at the idea of the feeling of being the &quot;mistress&nbsp;<br \/>\nof the house&quot; which I had before my departure; it was necessary that all pride should be broken,<br \/>\ncrushed, trampled down definitively, so that I may<br \/>\nat last be capable of understanding, seeing and feeling<br \/>\nthings as they are. I offered Thee this dwelling, O<br \/>\nLord, as if it was possible for me to possess anything<br \/>\nand so make of it an offering to Thee. All is Thine,<br \/>\nO Lord, it is Thou who placest everything at our<br \/>\ndisposal; but how great is our blindness when we<br \/>\nimagine that we can be the owners of anything! I<br \/>\nam a visitor here as everywhere else. Thy messenger<br \/>\nand Thy servant upon earth, a stranger among men,<br \/>\nand yet the very soul of their life and the love in<br \/>\ntheir hearts. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">In the second place, the whole atmosphere of the<br \/>\nhouse is charged with a religious gravity; here one<br \/>\ndescends immediately into the depths; meditation<br \/>\n<b>is<\/b> more gathered in and more serious; dispersion <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 23<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">disappears and gives place to concentration; and I feel<br \/>\nthis concentration literally descending From my head<br \/>\nto enter into my heart, and my heart seems to reach<br \/>\ngreater depths than my head. It is as if for three<br \/>\nmonths I had been loving with my head and that<br \/>\nnow only I begin to love with my heart; and this<br \/>\nbrings with it an incomparable gravity and sweetness&nbsp;<br \/>\nof feeling. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">A new door has opened in my being and an immensity&nbsp;<br \/>\nhas appeared before me! <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">I cross the threshold with devotion, feeling hardly<br \/>\nworthy yet to enter upon this hidden path veiled from<br \/>\nthe sight and, as though, invisibly luminous within. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">All is changed, all is new; the old garbs<br \/>\nhave dropped&nbsp;<br \/>\nand the new-born child half-opens its eyes to<br \/>\nthe light of the dawn. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a name=\"November_22,_1913\"><i>November<\/i> 22, 1913<\/a> <\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">A FEW minutes passed in silence before Thee<br \/>\nare worth centuries of felicity&#8230;&#8230; <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Grant, O Lord, that all shadows may be dispersed<br \/>\nand that, more and more, I may become Thy faithful<br \/>\nservant in constancy and in serenity; may my heart<br \/>\nbe before Thee pure like a pure crystal, so that all<br \/>\nof it may reflect Thee.<br \/>\nHow sweet it is to be before Thee in silence. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 24<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a name=\"November_25,_1913\"><i>November 25,<\/i> 1913<\/a><\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">THE greatest enemy of a silent contemplation<br \/>\nturned towards Thee is certainly this constant<br \/>\nsubconscient registering of the multitude of phenomena&nbsp;<br \/>\nwith which we are put into contact. So long as<br \/>\nwe are occupied with cerebral activity, our conscious<br \/>\nthought veils for us this excessive activity of our<br \/>\nsubconscient reception of things; quite a portion of<br \/>\nour sensibility, and not perhaps the smallest, plays<br \/>\nthe role of a cinematographic apparatus without our<br \/>\nknowledge and indeed to our detriment. It is only<br \/>\nwhen we silence our active thought, which is comparatively&nbsp;<br \/>\neasy to do, that we find surging from all<br \/>\nsides the multitude of little subconscient notations<br \/>\nwhich often drown us in their overflowing stream.<br \/>\nThis is why it happens, as soon as we try to enter<br \/>\ninto the silence of deep contemplation, that we are<br \/>\nassailed by innumerable thoughts\u2014if thoughts they<br \/>\ncan be called\u2014which do not in the least interest us,<br \/>\ndo not represent for us any action of desire, any<br \/>\nconscious attachment, but which only prove to us<br \/>\nour inability to control the receptivity, we might<br \/>\nsay, mechanical, of our subconscient. A considerable&nbsp;<br \/>\nlabour is needed to silence  all these<br \/>\nuseless noises, to stop this tiresome succession of<br \/>\nimages, to purify our minds from these thousand<br \/>\nlittle cumbersome and valueless nullities. And it <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">means so much time unprofitably lost, a terrible<br \/>\nwaste. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 25<\/font><\/p>\n<hr align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">What is the remedy? In their simplistic way, some<br \/>\nascetic disciplines preconize solitude and inaction: to<br \/>\nshelter the subconscient from all possibility of any<br \/>\nregistration; this appears to me a child&#8217;s remedy, for<br \/>\nit leaves the ascetic at the mercy of the first surprise,<br \/>\nand when he thinks he is perfectly master of himself,<br \/>\nif one day, he wishes to come back among his fellows<br \/>\nto help them, his subconscient so long deprived of<br \/>\nits receptive activity, is sure to abandon itself to it<br \/>\nwith an intensity greater than ever as soon as it gets<br \/>\nthe smallest opportunity. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">There is certainly another remedy. Which?<br \/>\nUndoubtedly&nbsp;<br \/>\nwe must learn how to control our subconscient&nbsp;<br \/>\nas we control our conscious thought. The<br \/>\nmeans for arriving at that are numerous. A regular<br \/>\nintrospection in the manner of the Buddhists and<br \/>\na systematic analysis of one&#8217;s dreams\u2014almost always<br \/>\nconstructed with this subconscient registration\u2014<br \/>\nform part of the method to be discovered. Those who follow the path of the intellect can have a conception very high and very true, they can conceive the true life<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">the life One with Thee, but they do not know<br \/>\nit; they have no inner experience of that life and<br \/>\nthey are unaware&nbsp; of any contact with Thee. These, who have an intellectual knowledge and who have shut themselves up for action in a construction which appears to them the best, are the most difficult of all to convert; one finds it harder to awaken in them the consciousness of the Divine than in any other being of<br \/>\ngood-will. It is love alone that can accomplish this miracle, for love opens all doors, pierces through all<br \/>\nwalls, crosses beyond all obstacles. And a little of true love does more than the finest speeches.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">O Lord, let this pure flower of love blossom<br \/>\nin me, so that it may make fragrant all who<br \/>\napproach us and its perfume sanctify them. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;line-height:150%;text-indent:25px\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">In this love are found peace and joy, the<br \/>\nsource of all strength and realisation.
