Are<br \/>\nthere even circumstances more or less favourable? I doubt it is the idea we form of them which enables s to profit better or worse by the lessons they us.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 65<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">O Lord, I implore Thee! Grant that I may be<br \/>\nperfectly conscious and master of the aggregate<br \/>\nwhich constitutes this personality, so that I may<br \/>\nbe delivered from myself and that Thou alone mayst   live and act through  these multiple<br \/>\nelements.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">To live in Love, by Love, for Love, indissolubly<br \/>\nunited to Thy highest manifestation&#8230;.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Ever more of light, more of beauty, more of<br \/>\ntruth!<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a name=\"March_3,_1914\"><i>March<\/i> 3, 1914<\/a> <\/font><\/p>\n<p><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">AS the day of departure draws near, I enter into a<br \/>\nsort of calm collectedness; I turn with an affectionate seriousness towards all those thousand little<br \/>\ntrifles which surround us and which have silently<br \/>\nplayed during so many years the part of faithful<br \/>\nfriends; I thank them with gratitude for all the charm<br \/>\nthey have been able to impart from the outside to our<br \/>\nlife; I wish, if they are destined to pass for a long or<br \/>\na brief period into other hands than ours, that those<br \/>\nhands may be gentle to them and may feel all the respect that is due to what Thy divine Love,<br \/>\nO Lord, has<br \/>\nmade to emerge from the dark inconscience of<br \/>\nchaos.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Then<b> <\/b> 1 turn towards the future, and my regard<br \/>\nbecomes still more grave. What it has in store for<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 66<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">us I do not know and am not anxious to know; outer circumstances have no importance at all, I would only wish that it may be the beginning of a<br \/>\nnew inner period, in which, more detached from<br \/>\nmaterial things, we may be more conscious of Thy<br \/>\nlaw and more solely consecrated to its manifestation; that it may be a period of a greater light, a greater<br \/>\nlove, a more perfect devotion to Thy cause. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">In a silent adoration I contemplate Thee. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a name=\"March_4,_1914\"><i>March<\/i> 4, 1914<\/a> <\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">IT is the last time, it may well be for long, that I<br \/>\nwrite at this table, in this quiet room steeped in Thy Presence. For the next<br \/>\nthree days I shall probably not be able to write&#8230; It is in an inner concentration that I contemplate this page which, as it<br \/>\nturns, vanishes into the dream of the past and I<br \/>\nregard this other page, blank but in potentiality full of the dream of the future&#8230;And yet what a small<br \/>\nthing it seems, childish and without importance,<br \/>\nwhen looked at in the light of Thy eternity. We must not run away<br \/>\nfrom suffering, we must not love and cultivate it<br \/>\neither, we must learn how to go down deep enough<br \/>\nin it to make it a lever which will have the power<br \/>\nto force open the doors of the eternal consciousness<br \/>\nand enter into the serenity of Thy unvarying oneness. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;line-height: 150%;margin-top: -1px;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Certainly this sentimental and physical attachment<br \/>\nwhich produces a wrench when the bodies separate,<br \/>\nis childish from a certain point of view, when we<br \/>\ncontemplate the impermanence of outer forms and<br \/>\nthe reality of Thy essential oneness; but on the other<br \/>\nhand, is not this attachment, this personal affection,<br \/>\nan unconscious effort of men to realise externally<br \/>\nas far as possible, that fundamental oneness towards<br \/>\nwhich they are ever tending without even being aware<br \/>\nof it? And precisely for this reason, is not the suffering<br \/>\nproduced by the separation one of the most effective<br \/>\nmeans of transcending this outer consciousness, of<br \/>\nreplacing this superficial attachment by the integral<br \/>\nrealisation of Thy eternal oneness? <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 25px;line-height: 150%;margin-top: -1px;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">It was this that I wished for them all; it was this<br \/>\nthat I ardently willed for them, and it was for this that I, assured of Thy victory and certain of Thy triumph,<br \/>\nconfided to Thee their grief so that Thou mayst<br \/>\nby illumining heal it. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 68<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">O Lord, grant that all this beauty of affection<br \/>\nand tenderness may be transformed into a glorious<br \/>\nknowledge. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Grant that the best may come out of everything,<br \/>\nand Thy happy Peace may reign over the earth. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><b><i>On board the Kaga Maru,<br \/>\n<a name=\"March_7,_1914\">March <\/a> <\/i><a name=\"March_7,_1914\">7, 1914<\/a> <\/b><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">THOU wast with us yesterday as the most marvellous protection; Thou hast permitted Thy<br \/>\nlaw to triumph even up to the most outer manifestation. Violence was answered by calm, brutality by<br \/>\nthe power of gentleness; and where there could have<br \/>\ntaken place an irreparable misfortune. Thy power<br \/>\nwas glorified. O Lord! with what fervent gratitude<br \/>\nI saluted Thy presence. It was for me a sure sign<br \/>\nthat we would have the force to act, to think,<br \/>\nto live in Thy name and for Thee; not only in<br \/>\n&quot;Mention and will, but effectively, in an integral<br \/>\nrealisation. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">This morning my prayer rises to Thee, always with the same aspiration: to live Thy love, to radiate<br \/>\nmy love, with such potency and effectiveness that all may feel fortified, regenerated and illumined<b><br \/>\n<\/b>by<b> <\/b>our contact. To have power to heal life, to relieve suffering, to generate peace \u00bband calm confidence, to efface Aguish and replace it by the sense of the one<br \/>\nhappiness, the happiness that is founded in <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 69<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Thee and never fades&#8230; O Lord, O Marvellous<br \/>\nFriend, O all-powerful Master, penetrate all our<br \/>\nbeing, transfigure it till Thou alone livest in us and<br \/>\nthrough us! <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a name=\"March_8,_1914\"><i>March<\/i> 8, 1914<\/a> <\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">IN front of this calm sunrise which turned all within me into silence and peace, at the moment<br \/>\nwhen I grew conscious of Thee and Thou alone<br \/>\nwast living in me, O Lord, it seemed to me that I<br \/>\nadopted all the inhabitants of this ship, and enveloped<br \/>\nthem in an equal love, and that so in each one of them<br \/>\nsomething of Thy consciousness would awake. Not<br \/>\noften had I felt so strongly Thy divine power, and<br \/>\nThy invincible light, and once again total was my<br \/>\nconfidence and unmixed my joyful surrender. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">O Thou who relievest all suffering and disperses!<br \/>\nall ignorance, O Thou the supreme healer, be constantly present on this boat in the heart of those whom<br \/>\nit shelters that once again Thy glory may be manifested! <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<b><a name=\"March_9,_1914\"><br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">March<\/font><\/i><\/b><b><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> 9, 1914<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">THOSE who live for Thee and in Thee may change their physical surroundings, their habits, climate,<br \/>\n&quot;milieu,&quot; but everywhere they find the same atmosphere;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 70<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">they carry that atmosphere in themselves, in their<br \/>\nthought constantly fixed on Thee. Everywhere they<br \/>\nfeel at home, for everywhere they are in Thy house. No longer do they marvel at<br \/>\nthe novelty, unexpectedness, picturesqueness of things and countries; for<br \/>\nthem, it is Thy Presence that is manifest in all and Thy unchangeable splendour<br \/>\nwhich never leaves them,<br \/>\nis apparent in the least grain of sand. The whole<br \/>\nearth chants Thy praises; in spite of the obscurity,<br \/>\nmisery, ignorance, through it all, it is still the glory<br \/>\nof Thy love which we perceive and with which we<br \/>\ncan commune ceaselessly everywhere. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">O Lord, my sweet Master, all this I constantly<br \/>\nexperience on this boat which seems to me a marvellous abode of peace, a temple sailing in Thy honour<br \/>\nover the waves of the subconscient passivity which<br \/>\nwe have to conquer and awaken to the consciousness<br \/>\nof Thy divine Presence. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Blessed was the day when I came to know Thee\u00bb<br \/>\nO Ineffable Eternity! <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Blessed among all days be that day when the<br \/>\nearth at last awakened shall know Thee and shall<br \/>\nlive only for Thee&#8217; <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b><i><a name=\"March_10,_1914\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">M<\/font><\/i><\/b><b><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><i>arch<\/i> 1O, 1914<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">IN the silence of the night Thy Peace reigned over<br \/>\nall things, in the silence of my heart Thy Peace <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 71<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">reigns always, and when these two silences were<br \/>\nunited. Thy Peace was so powerful that no trouble of any kind could resist it. I then thought of all those<br \/>\nwho were watching over the ship to safeguard and<br \/>\nprotect our route, and in gratitude, I willed that<br \/>\nThy Peace should be born and live in their hearts; then I thought of all those<br \/>\nwho, confident and carefree, slept the sleep of inconscience, and, with solicitude for their miseries, pity for their latent suffering<br \/>\nwhich would awake in them in their own waking,<br \/>\nI willed that a little of Thy Peace might dwell in<br \/>\ntheir hearts and bring to birth in them the life of<br \/>\nthe Spirit, the light which dispels ignorance. I then<br \/>\nthought of all the dwellers of this vast sea, visible<br \/>\nand invisible, and I willed that over them might<br \/>\nbe extended Thy Peace. I thought next of those<br \/>\nwhom we had left far away and whose affection is with<br \/>\nus, and with a great tenderness, I willed for them Thy<br \/>\nconscious and lasting Peace, the plenitude of Thy<br \/>\nPeace proportioned to their capacity to receive it.<br \/>\nThen I thought of all those to whom we are going,<br \/>\nwho are restless with childish preoccupations and<br \/>\nfight for mean competitions of interest in ignorance<br \/>\nand egoism; and ardently, in a great aspiration, for<br \/>\nthem I asked for the plenary light of Thy Peace. I<br \/>\nnext thought of all those whom we know, of all those<br \/>\nwhom we do not know, of all the life that is working<br \/>\nitself out, of all that has changed its form, and all that<br \/>\n<b>is<\/b> not yet in form, and for all that, and also for all of<br \/>\nwhich I cannot think, for all that is present to my <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 72<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">memory, and for all that I forget, in a great ingathering<br \/>\nand mute adoration, I implored Thy Peace.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<a name=\"March_12,_1914\"><br \/>\n<b><i><font face=\"Times New Roman\">M<\/font><\/i><\/b><b><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><i>arch<\/i> 12, 1914<\/font><\/a><\/b><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">O LORD, my sole aspiration is to know Thee better<br \/>\nand serve Thee better everyday. What do the outer circumstances matter? They<br \/>\nappear to me everyday more vain and more illusory, and I take less and<br \/>\nless interest in what will outwardly happen to us ; but<br \/>\nI am more and more intensely interested in the only<br \/>\nthing which appears to me important: to know Thee better in order to serve Thee better. All outer events<br \/>\nmust converge towards this goal, and towards it alone; and for that all depends upon the attitude we have<br \/>\ntowards them. To be constantly in search of Thee<br \/>\nin. everything, to will to manifest Thee better in every<br \/>\ncircumstance, in this attitude is to be found supreme<br \/>\nPeace, perfect serenity, true contentment. This word should be reserved for<br \/>\nthat which, in a being, is illumined by Thy Presence,<br \/>\nidentifies itself with Thee and participates in Thy<br \/>\nabsolute Consciousness, for that which has knowledge,<br \/>\nwhich is  &quot; perfectly awakened,&quot;  as  says the<br \/>\nBuddha. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Outside this state, there are infinite degrees of<br \/>\nconsciousness descending down to the complete darkness,<br \/>\nthe veritable inconscience which may be a domain not<br \/>\nyet touched by the light of Thy divine love (but that<br \/>\nappears improbable in physical substance), or which<br \/>\nis, by reason of some ignorance, outside, our individual region of perception. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">This is, however, only a way of speaking, and a very<br \/>\nincomplete one at that; for at the moment when the<br \/>\nbeing becomes aware of Thy presence and identifies itself with Thy<br \/>\nconsciousness, it is conscious in everything and everywhere. But the fugitive duration of<br \/>\nthis supreme consciousness can be explained only<br \/>\nby the complexity of the elements of the being, by<br \/>\ntheir inequality in the illumination and by the fact that they enter<br \/>\nsuccessively into activity. And how many efforts and<br \/>\nstruggles are needed to attain to this crystallisation, to come out of the<br \/>\namorphous middle state; and how<br \/>\nmany efforts and struggles again to give ourselves, to surrender, once the individuality is constituted. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 80<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Few beings willingly consent to these efforts; then<br \/>\nlife with its brutality of the unforeseen compels men<br \/>\nto make this endeavour against their will, because<br \/>\nthey cannot do otherwise. Why not<br \/>\nemploy all one&#8217;s energy solely to will in the calm of an inner confidence, that<br \/>\nit may be Thy law which&nbsp; triumphs everywhere and always over all difficulty,<br \/>\nall darkness, all egoism! How the horizon widens<br \/>\nas soon as we learn to take this attitude; how all cares cease and give place to an invariable illumination, to the omnipotence of disinterestedness! However, in Thy mercy Thou turnest all goodwill to&nbsp;<br \/>\naccount, and a flash of sincerity is enough to make<br \/>\nThy divine light take advantage of it for illumining<br \/>\nthe intelligence, to make Thy sublime love penetrate<br \/>\ninto the hearts of men and fill them with that pure<br \/>\nand high benevolence which is one of the best expressions of Thy law. What I willed for them, with Thy<br \/>\nwill, at the moments when I could be in a true<br \/>\ncommunion with Thee, grant that they may have<br \/>\nreceived it on the day when, striving to forget external <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 82<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">contingencies, they turned towards<b> <\/b> their noblest<br \/>\nthought, towards their best feelings. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">May the supreme serenity of Thy sublime Presence<br \/>\nawake in them.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><b><a name=\"March_23,_1914\"><i>March<\/i> 23, 1914<\/a> <\/b><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"justify\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">IN my view the ideal state is that in which, constantly conscious with Thy Consciousness, we<br \/>\nknow at every moment, spontaneously, without any<br \/>\nnecessity of reflection, exactly what we should do<br \/>\nto express in the best way Thy law. I know this state<br \/>\nbecause I have been in it at certain moments, but<br \/>\nvery often the knowledge of the &quot;how&quot; is veiled by<br \/>\na mist of ignorance and we have to appeal to<br \/>\nreflection which is not always a good counsellor; not<br \/>\nto speak of all that we do every moment, without<br \/>\nhaving time for reflection, being at the mercy of the<br \/>\ninspiration of the moment. In what measure is it in conformity with or contrary to Thy law? All<br \/>\ndepends on the state of the subconscient, on what is active in it at the moment. Once the act is accomplished, if it has any importance, if we can look at<br \/>\nit, analyse it, understand it, it serves as a lesson,<br \/>\nCables us to be aware of the motive force which has made us act, and so of<br \/>\nsomething of that subconscient which still governs us and has to be mastered.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\" align=\"center\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 83<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">It is impossible that in every terrestrial action<br \/>\nthere should not be a good and a bad side. Even<br \/>\nthe actions which best express the most divine law<br \/>\nof Love contain in them something of the disorder<br \/>\nand darkness inherent in the world as it is at present. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Some men, those who are called pessimists, perceive<br \/>\nalmost solely the dark side of everything. The optimists, on the contrary, see only the side of beauty<br \/>\nand harmony. And if it is ridiculous and ignorant<br \/>\nto be an involuntary optimist, is it not a happy<br \/>\nconquest to be made to become a voluntary optimist?<br \/>\nIn the eyes of the pessimists, whatever one does<br \/>\nwill be always bad, ignorant or egoistic; how could<br \/>\none satisfy them? It is an impossible enterprise. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">There is only one resource, it is to unite ourselves<br \/>\nas perfectly as we can with the highest and purest<br \/>\nlight we can conceive of, to identify our consciousness as completely as<br \/>\npossible with the absolute Consciousness, to strive to receive all inspiration from it alone,<br \/>\nin order to facilitate as best we can its manifestation<br \/>\nupon the earth, and, confident of its power, consider<br \/>\nthe events with serenity. Since everything is necessarily mixed in the present manifestation, it is-<br \/>\nwisest to do our best, striving towards a higher and<br \/>\nhigher light, and to resign ourselves to the fact that<br \/>\nabsolute perfection is for the moment unrealisable. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Still with what an ardour should we not always<br \/>\naspire towards this inaccessible perfection! <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Page &#8211; 84<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<b><br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a name=\"March_24,_l9i4\"><i>March<\/i> 24, l9i4<\/a> <\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">THE result of all my reflections of yesterday is the<br \/>\nconfirmation that the only trouble I experience<br \/>\ncomes from the fear I have that I have not been or I<br \/>\nam not perfectly identified with Thy law. And this<br \/>\ntrouble comes indeed from the fact that the identification is not complete, for if it were complete, I could<br \/>\nnot ask myself whether it was so or not, and on the<br \/>\nother hand, I know by experience, all trouble would<br \/>\nbecome impossible to me. <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">But in the presence of an error or false step taken,<br \/>\nthe true thought we should have is not to say to<br \/>\nourselves: &quot;I should have done better, I should have<br \/>\ndone this instead of that.&quot; But rather, &quot;I was not<br \/>\nsufficiently identified with the eternal Consciousness,<br \/>\nI must strive to realise better this definitive and<br \/>\nintegral union.&quot; <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;text-indent: 25px;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\">Yesterday afternoon, during the long hours of<br \/>\nsilent contemplation, I understood at last what true<br \/>\nidentification is with the thing we are thinking of. I have touched, so to say, this realisation, no longer<br \/>\nby attaining a moral state, but simply by fixity and mastery of the thought. I understood that I needed<br \/>\nlong, very long hours of contemplation in order to be able to perfect this realisation. This is one of<br \/>\nthe things I expect from my journey to India, if, indeed. I knew well that none could<br \/>\ninvoke Thy Presence in vain and if in the sincerity<br \/>\nof our hearts we commune with Thee through no<br \/>\nmatter what organism, body or human collectivity,<br \/>\nthis organism, in spite of its ignorance, finds its<br \/>\nunconsciousness wholly transformed.
