There are their<br \/>\nheroes and great bowmen, like unto <span class=\"SpellE\">Bhema<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Urjoona<\/span> in war, <span class=\"SpellE\">Yuyudhana<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Virata<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Drupad<\/span>, the mighty<br \/>\nwarrior, <span class=\"SpellE\">Dhristaketou<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Chekitana<\/span><br \/>\nand <span class=\"SpellE\">Kashi\u2019s<\/span> heroic king; and <span class=\"SpellE\">Pourujit<\/span>,<br \/>\n<span class=\"SpellE\">Coontybhoj<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Shalvya<\/span>,<br \/>\nlion of men, and <span class=\"SpellE\">Yudhamanyu<\/span> of mighty deeds and hero <span class=\"SpellE\">Uttamaujas<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Subhadra\u2019s<\/span> son and<br \/>\nthe sons of <span class=\"SpellE\">Draupady<\/span>, great warriors all. And they<br \/>\nwho are our chief and first, them also mark, O best of the twice-born, \u2014<br \/>\nleaders of my army, for the reckoning let me speak their names, thou and <span class=\"SpellE\">Bhishma<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Curna<\/span>, <span class=\"SpellE\">Cripa<\/span>, victorious in battle, <span class=\"SpellE\">Aswatthama<\/span><br \/>\nand <span class=\"SpellE\">Vicurna<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Somadutta\u2019s<\/span><br \/>\nson, and many other courageous hearts that for me have cast their lives behind<br \/>\nthem, <span class=\"SpellE\">smiters<\/span> with various weapons and many arms, and<br \/>\nall are expert in war. Weak to its task is this our strength but <span class=\"SpellE\">Bhishma<\/span> <i>guards the host; sufficient to its<\/i> task is<br \/>\nyonder strength of the foe and <span class=\"SpellE\">Bhema<\/span> is their guard.<br \/>\nDo ye then, each stationed to his work, stand up in all the gates of the war<br \/>\nand <span class=\"SpellE\">Bhishma<\/span>, ever <span class=\"SpellE\">Bhishma<\/span><br \/>\ndo ye guard, yea all guard him alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:25pt;line-height:200%'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:25pt;line-height:200%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt'>Then giving joy birth in <span class=\"SpellE\">Duryodhan\u2019s<\/span><br \/>\nheart the Grandsire, elder of the <span class=\"SpellE\">Kurus<\/span>, thundered<br \/>\nloud his war-cry\u2019s lion roar, and blew his <span class=\"SpellE\">conchshell\u2019s<\/span><br \/>\nblare, the man of might. Then <span class=\"SpellE\">conchshell<\/span> and bugle,<br \/>\ntrumpet and horn and drum, all suddenly were smitten and blown, and a huge rushing<br \/>\nsound arose. Then in their mighty car erect, their car with snow-white steeds, <span class=\"SpellE\">Madhava<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Pandava<\/span> blew their<br \/>\ndivine shells, <span class=\"SpellE\">Hrishikesh<\/span> on <span class=\"SpellE\">Panchajanya<\/span>,<br \/>\non <span class=\"SpellE\">Devdatta<\/span>, god-given, <span class=\"SpellE\">Dhanunjoy<\/span><br \/>\nblew, and on his great shell from far Bengal blew <span class=\"SpellE\">Bhema<\/span>,<br \/>\nwolf-belly, the man of dreadful deeds, and on <span class=\"SpellE\">Anantavijay<\/span>,<br \/>\nboundless conquest, <span class=\"SpellE\">Yudhisthira<\/span> the king, even <span class=\"SpellE\">Coonty\u2019s<\/span> son, and <span class=\"SpellE\">Nacool<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Sahadev<\/span> on <span class=\"SpellE\">Sughosha<\/span>, far-sounding<br \/>\nand <span class=\"SpellE\">Manipushpaca<\/span>, jewel- flower.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Section2\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;text-indent:25pt;line-height:200%'><span lang=\"EN-US\">Page \u2013 77<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center;line-height:12.0pt'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:25pt;line-height:200%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt'>&nbsp;And <span class=\"SpellE\">Kashi\u2019s<\/span><br \/>\nking, that excellent bowman, and <span class=\"SpellE\">Shikandi<\/span>, that great<br \/>\nfighter, and <span class=\"SpellE\">Dhristadyoumna<\/span> and Viral and <span class=\"SpellE\">Satyaqy<\/span> unconquered, and <span class=\"SpellE\">Drupad<\/span><br \/>\nand the children of <span class=\"SpellE\">Draupady<\/span>, and <span class=\"SpellE\">Subhadra\u2019s<\/span><br \/>\ngreat-armed son \u2014 all these from all sides blew each his separate shell, O Lord<br \/>\nof earth, that the thunder of them tore the hearts of <span class=\"SpellE\">Dhritarashtra\u2019s<\/span><br \/>\nsons and earth and heaven re-echoed with the <span class=\"SpellE\">clamour<\/span><br \/>\nand the roar. Now as the ape-bannered, the <span class=\"SpellE\">Pandava<\/span>,<br \/>\nsaw the <span class=\"SpellE\">Dhritarashtrians<\/span> at their war-like posts, so<br \/>\nheaved he up his bow and even as the shafts began to fall <span class=\"SpellE\">spake<\/span><br \/>\nto <span class=\"SpellE\">Hrishikesha<\/span> this word, O King.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:25pt;line-height:200%'>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:25pt;line-height:200%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt'>\u201cRight in the midst between either host set thou my car, O<br \/>\n<span class=\"SpellE\">unfallen<\/span>. Let me scan these who stand arrayed and<br \/>\ngreedy for battle; let me know who must wage war with me in this great holiday<br \/>\nof fight. Fain would I see who are these that are here for combat to do in<br \/>\nbattle the will of <span class=\"SpellE\">Dhritarashtra\u2019s<\/span> witless son.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:25pt;line-height:200%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt'>Thus, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Bharata<\/span>, to <span class=\"SpellE\">Hrishikesha<\/span> <span class=\"SpellE\">Gudakesha<\/span> said, who<br \/>\nset in, the midst between either army the noble car, in front of <span class=\"SpellE\">Bhishma<\/span> and <span class=\"SpellE\">Drona<\/span> and all those<br \/>\nkings of earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:25pt;line-height:200%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt'>\u201cLo, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Partha<\/span>,\u201d he said, \u201call<br \/>\nthese <span class=\"SpellE\">Kurus<\/span> met in one field!\u201d There <span class=\"SpellE\">Partha<\/span> saw fathers and grandsires stand, and teachers and<br \/>\nuncles and brothers and sons and grandsons and dear comrades, and fathers of<br \/>\nwives and heart\u2019s friends, all in either battle opposed. And when the son of <span class=\"SpellE\">Coonty<\/span> beheld all these dear friends and kindred facing<br \/>\neach other in war, his heart was besieged with utter pity and failed him, and<br \/>\nhe said,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:25pt;line-height:200%'>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt'>\u201cO Krishna, I behold these kinsmen and friends arrayed in<br \/>\nhostile arms and my limbs sink beneath me and my face grows <span class=\"SpellE\">dryland<\/span><br \/>\nthere are <span class=\"SpellE\">shudderings<\/span> in my body, and my hair stands<br \/>\non end, <span class=\"SpellE\">Gandeva<\/span> falls from my hand and my very skin<br \/>\nis on fire. Yea, I cannot stand and my brain; whirls, and evil omens, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Keshava<\/span>,<br \/>\nmeet mine eyes. I can see no blessing for me, having slain my kin in fight. I<br \/>\ndesire not victory, O Krishna, no nor kingship nor delights. What shall we do<br \/>\nwith kingship, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Govinda<\/span>, what with enjoyments, what<br \/>\nwith life ? They for whose sake we desire kin ship and enjoyments and delight,<br \/>\nlo they all stand in battle against us casting behind them their riches and<br \/>\nlives, our teachers and our fathers am our sons, our grandsires and uncles and<br \/>\nthe fathers of our wives, and on grandsons and our wives\u2019 brothers and the kin<br \/>\nof our beloved, These though they slay me, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Madhushudan<\/span>,<br \/>\nI would not slay, no not for the empire of heaven and space and hell, much less<br \/>\nfor this poor earth of <span style='font-variant:small-caps'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><font size=\"3\">ours.<\/font> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt'>Slaying<br \/>\nthe sons of <span class=\"SpellE\">Dhritarashtra<\/span> what joy would be left to<br \/>\nus, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Janardana<\/span>?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Section3\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='margin:0;text-align:center;text-indent:25pt;line-height:200%'><span lang=\"EN-US\">Page \u2013 78<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center;line-height:12.0pt'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='margin:0;text-align:justify;text-indent:25pt;line-height:200%'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt'>&nbsp;Sin, sin alone would find<br \/>\nlodging in us, if we slew these, though our adversaries and foes. Therefore we<br \/>\ndo not right to slay the children of <span class=\"SpellE\">Dhritarashtra<\/span><br \/>\nand their friends, for how can we be happy, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Madhava<\/span>,<br \/>\nif we slay our kin? Even though these see not, for their hearts are swept away<br \/>\nby greed, error done in the ruin of our house and grievous sin in treachery to<br \/>\nnatural friends, how shall we not understand and turn back from this sin, we<br \/>\nwho have eyes, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Janardana<\/span>, for error done in the<br \/>\nruin of our house? When the family dwindle, the eternal ideals of the race are<br \/>\nlost, and when ideals are lost, unrighteousness besets the whole race; in the<br \/>\nprevalence of unrighteousness, O Krishna, the women of the race go astray, and<br \/>\nwhen women grow corrupt, bastard confusion is born again; but confusion brings<br \/>\nthe slayers of the race and the race itself to very hell; for the long line of<br \/>\nfathers perish and the food <span class=\"SpellE\">ceaseth<\/span> and the water is<br \/>\ngiven no more. By these sins who bring their race to perdition, fathers they of<br \/>\nbastard confusion, the eternal ideals of the nation and the hearth are overthrown,<br \/>\nand for men who have lost the ancient righteousness of the race, in hell an<br \/>\neternal habitation is set apart, it is told. Alas, a dreadful sin have we set<br \/>\nourselves to do, that we have made ready. From greed of lordship and pleasure,<br \/>\nto slay our own kin.
