\nThe Prayer to Mammon<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Cast birth into the nether Hell; let all <\/span><\/p>\n

The useless tribe of talents farther fall;<\/span><\/p>\n

Throw virtue headlong from a rock and turn <\/span><\/p>\n

High nobleness into the fire to burn;<\/span><\/p>\n

The heroic heart let some swift thunder rive, <\/span><\/p>\n

Our enemy that hinders us to live;<\/span><\/p>\n

Wealth let us only keep; this one thing less, <\/span><\/p>\n

All those become as weeds and emptiness.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n


\nA Miracle<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Behold a wonder mid the sons of men!<\/span><\/p>\n

The man is undiminished he we knew, <\/span><\/p>\n

Unmaimed his organs and his senses keen<\/span><\/p>\n

Even as of old, his actions nowise new, <\/span><\/p>\n

Voice, tone and words the same we heard before, <\/span><\/p>\n

The brain\u2019s resistless march too as of yore;<\/span><\/p>\n

Only the nattering heat of wealth is gone, <\/span><\/p>\n

And lo! the whole man changed, his praises done.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n


\nWealth the Sorcerer<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nHe
\nwho has wealth, has birth; gold who can spill, <\/span><\/p>\n

Is
\nscholar, doctor, critic, what you will;<\/span><\/p>\n

For
\nwho has golden coin, has golden tongue, <\/span><\/p>\n

Is
\nglorious, gracious, beautiful and young;<\/span><\/p>\n

All
\nvirtues, talents, fames to gold repair <\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nlodge in gold leaving the poor man bare.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nTwo Kinds of Loss<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These things are deaths, ill-counsel
\nruining kings,<\/span><\/p>\n

The son by fondling spoiled, by him the
\nrace, <\/span><\/p>\n

Attachment, to the sage\u2019s heart that
\nclings,<\/span><\/p>\n

And natural goodness marred by company
\nbase, <\/span><\/p>\n

The Brahmin by scant study unbrahminised,<\/span><\/p>\n

Sweet shame by wine o\u2019erthrown, by
\nwandering long <\/span><\/p>\n

Affection waning, friendship true unprized,<\/span><\/p>\n

Tillage uncared, good fortune follies
\nwrong;<\/span><\/p>\n

But wealth in double way men may reject, <\/span><\/p>\n

Nobly by giving, poorly by neglect.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n


\nThe Triple Way of Wealth<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Three
\nfinal roads wealth takes and only three, <\/span><\/p>\n

To
\ngive, enjoy or lose it utterly:<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nhis whose miser hand to give is slow <\/span><\/p>\n

Nor
\nyet enjoys, the worst third way shall go.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n


\nThe Beauty of Giving<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Be not a miser of thy strength and store;<\/span><\/p>\n

Oft in a wounded grace more beauty is. <\/span><\/p>\n

The jewel which the careful gravers score;<\/span><\/p>\n

The sweet fair girl-wife broken with bridal
\nbliss, <\/span><\/p>\n

The rut-worn tusker, the autumnal stream<\/span><\/p>\n

With its long beaches dry and slender
\nflood;<\/span><\/p>\n

The hero wreathed with victory\u2019s diadem,<\/span><\/p>\n

Adorned with wounds and glorious with his blood;<\/span><\/p>\n

The moon\u2019s last disc; rich men of their
\nbright dross, <\/span><\/p>\n

By gifts disburdened, fairer shine by loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n\tCircumstance<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\tThere is no absoluteness in
\n\tobjects. See<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThis indigent man aspire as to a
\n\tprize <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tTo handfuls of mere
\n\tbarley-bread! yet he<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tA few days past, fed full with
\n\tluxuries, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHeld for a trifle earth and all
\n\ther skies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tNot <\/b>in themselves are objects great or small, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tBut circumstance works on the elastic mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tTo widen or contract. The view
\n\tis all, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAnd by our inner state the
\n\tworld\u2019s defined.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/p>\n


\n\tAdvice to a King<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\tHe fosters, King, the calf who
\n\tmilks the cow,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAnd thou who takest of the wide earth tax, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tFoster the people; with laborious brow<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAnd sleepless vigil strive till
\n\tnought it lacks. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThen shall the earth become thy faery tree <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tOf plenty, pleasure, fame, felicity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/p>\n


\n\tPolicy<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\tOften she lies, wears sometimes
\n\tbrow of truth,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tKind sometimes, sometimes ravening-merciless;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tNow open-handed, full of bounty
\n\tand grace,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAnd now a harpy; now sweet honey
\n\tand ruth<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tFlows from her tongue, now
\n\tmenace harsh or stern;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThis moment with a bottomless
\n\tdesire <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tShe gathers millions in, the
\n\tnext will tire, \u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tEndless expense takes prodigally
\n\tits turn.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThus like a harlot changes
\n\tmomently<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tIn princes the chameleon Policy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe Uses of High Standing<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tMen highly placed by six good
\n\tgifts are high <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe first is noble liberality;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe second, power that swift
\n\tobedience brings;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tService to holy men and holy
\n\tthings<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tComes next; then fame;
\n\tprotection then of friends;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tPleasure in pleasant things the
\n\tgreat list ends. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWhose rising with these six is
\n\tunallied, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWhat seeks he by a mighty
\n\tprince\u2019s side ?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/p>\n


\n\tRemonstrance with the
\n\tSuppliant<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\tWhat the Creator on thy forehead
\n\ttraced<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAs on a plate of bronze
\n\tindelibly, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tExpect that much or little,
\n\tworst or best,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWherever thou dwell, nobly or
\n\twretchedly, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tSince thou shalt not have less,
\n\tthough full of pain <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tIn deserts waterless mid savage
\n\tmen <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThou wander sole; nor on
\n\tOlympus-hoar <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tRanked amid mighty Gods shalt
\n\tthou have more. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tTherefore be royal-hearted still
\n\tand bold,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t0 man, nor thy proud crest in
\n\tvain abase <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tCringing to rich men for their
\n\tgathered gold.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tFrom the small well or ocean
\n\tfathomless <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe jar draws equally what it
\n\tcan hold.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/p>\n


\n\tThe Rain-lark to the
\n\tCloud<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tYou opulent clouds that in high
\n\theavens ride, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t            Is\u2019t fame you seek?
\n\tbut surely all men know <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t            To you the darting
\n\train-larks homage owe!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHold you then back your showers,
\n\tbecause your pride<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tBy our low suings must be
\n\tgratified ? <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAll vapours are not like, the

\n\tDarkening; some drench the earth
\n\tfor noble fruit, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tSome are vain thunderers
\n\twandering by with bruit:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tSue not to each thou seest then,
\n\t0 bird;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tIf humbly entreat thou must, let few have heard. <\/span><\/p>\n
