Not by<br \/>\nrefraining from works shall a man taste <span class=\"SpellE\">actionlessness<\/span>,<br \/>\nand not by renouncing of the world shall he reach perfection. For verily no man<br \/>\neven for a moment remains without doing, since each is made to do whether he<br \/>\nwill or not by the moods of his essential nature. He who <span class=\"SpellE\">coerceth<\/span><br \/>\nthe organs of action, and <span class=\"SpellE\">sitteth<\/span> remembering in his<br \/>\nheart the things in which the senses work, is a man deceived in spirit, him<br \/>\nthey call hypo\u00adcrite, but whosoever <span class=\"SpellE\">governeth<\/span> the<br \/>\nsenses with his mind, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Urjoona<\/span>, and <span class=\"SpellE\">entereth<\/span> on Yoga in works using the organs of action<br \/>\nwithout attachment, is distinguished above all beings. Do thou works that the<br \/>\nlaw demands of thee, for action is mightier than inaction; yea, without works<br \/>\nthe very maintenance of thy body cannot be. \u2018<span class=\"SpellE\">Tis<\/span> by<br \/>\ndoing works in other spirit than as a sacrifice, that this world of creatures <span class=\"SpellE\">falleth<\/span> into bondage to its ?<b> <\/b>works; but do thou<i> <\/i><span class=\"SpellE\">practise<\/span><i> <\/i>works as a sacrifice, O son of County,<i><br \/>\nwith a.<\/i> mind free from the yoke of attachment. For with Sacrifice the Father,<br \/>\nof old, created all people and said unto them,<b> \u201c<\/b>By Sacrifice shall ye<br \/>\nbeget offspring; lo, the chosen joys of your desire, they shall be to you the<br \/>\nmilk of her udders. Cherish you the gods with Sacrifice, and the gods shall<br \/>\ncherish in turn; thus by cherishing each other shall ye attain to your highest<br \/>\nwelfare. Cherished with sacrifice the gods shall bestow on you the joys you<br \/>\nmost desire\u201d; and he is no better than a thief who <span class=\"SpellE\">enjoyeth<\/span><br \/>\nwhat they give, and <span class=\"SpellE\">giveth<\/span> not to them again. The<br \/>\ngood who eat the remnants of the Sacri\u00adfice are delivered from all their<br \/>\ntransgressions, but the accursed eat and drink sin who cook their food but for<br \/>\ntheir own selfish bellies. From food all creatures are born, and from rain is<br \/>\nthe birth of food, but rain <span class=\"SpellE\">ariseth<\/span> from the<br \/>\nSacrifice and Sacrifice hath its root in works; works know to be&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center;line-height:200%;margin-left:0;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0'><span lang=\"EN-US\">Page \u2013 85<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center;line-height:12.0pt'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Section10\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='text-align:justify;line-height:200%;margin-left:0;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt'><br \/>\n&nbsp;born of the Eternal, for by<br \/>\nthe imperishable word of the Eternal they were brought into being. Therefore is<br \/>\nthe Eternal everywhere and in all things; yea. He hath His home for ever in the<br \/>\nheart of the Sacrifice. This is the wheel that God hath set going, and who <span class=\"SpellE\">goeth<\/span> not with it, whose days are a wickedness, whose<br \/>\ndelight and ease are in the senses, <span class=\"SpellE\">liveth<\/span> his life<br \/>\nin vain, O son of <span class=\"SpellE\">Pritha<\/span>. But for the man whose whole<br \/>\npleasure is in the spirit and who satisfies his longing with the Spirit, yea,<br \/>\nwho is utterly content with the Spirit, for him there is no needful action.<br \/>\nFor, indeed, he hath no end at all to gain by doing neither any by not doing,<br \/>\nhe hath no dependence for end or aim on any in even this whole world of<br \/>\ncreatures. Therefore, with\u00adout attachment do ever the work before thee, since<br \/>\nby doing works with\u00adout attachment man <span class=\"SpellE\">reacheth<\/span> the<br \/>\nHighest. \u2018<span class=\"SpellE\">Twas<\/span> by works alone that the men of old<br \/>\nreached to utter perfection, even <span class=\"SpellE\">Junak<\/span> and the rest.<br \/>\nMoreover, even if thou <span class=\"SpellE\">lookest<\/span> to the right<br \/>\ngovernment of the world, thou <span class=\"SpellE\">shouldest<\/span> be doing.<br \/>\nWhat they see their Greatest do, even that the rest of the folk will <span class=\"SpellE\">practise<\/span>, and the standard that the Best <span class=\"SpellE\">setteth<\/span> up, the world will surely follow. Behold, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Partha<\/span>, there is <span class=\"SpellE\">nought<\/span> at all in<br \/>\nthe three worlds that I must do. There is nothing I have not, or that I yet<br \/>\nneed to win, and still I move in the path of works. For verily were I not to<br \/>\nmove sleeplessly in the path of works, \u2014 lo, men follow utterly the way wherein<br \/>\nI tread, O son of <span class=\"SpellE\">Pritha<\/span>, \u2014 then would all these<br \/>\nworlds sink and perish were I not to do works, and I should become the creator<br \/>\nof bastard confusion and the slayer of all these creatures. That which the<br \/>\nignorant do with attachment to the work, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Bharata<\/span>,<br \/>\nthe wise man should do without attachment, wishing only to keep the world in<br \/>\nits traces. Let him not be the cause of division and con\u00adfusion of mind in the<br \/>\nignorant who are attached to their works, but let him, knowing all, set them to<br \/>\nall the works of this world by doing works in Yoga. Lo, works are done but by<br \/>\nthe modes of Nature in their inevitable working, but the spirit of man is<br \/>\ndeceived by the sense of separate existence and he <span class=\"SpellE\">sayth<\/span><br \/>\nin himself, \u201cI, even I, am the doer\u201d. But he who <span class=\"SpellE\">knoweth<\/span><br \/>\nto the core how the workings of the modes are <span class=\"SpellE\">parcelled<\/span><br \/>\nout, believeth that the modes work in and upon the modes, and <span class=\"SpellE\">suffereth<\/span> not attachment to seize him. But most men who are<br \/>\ndeceived by the modes of Nature cling) to her mode-workings; these men of dull<br \/>\nbrains, these imperfect <span class=\"SpellE\">knowers<\/span>, let not the perfect<br \/>\nknower cause to swerve and stumble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='text-align:justify;margin-left:0;text-indent:25pt;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;line-height:200%'>\n<font size=\"3\">\\<\/font><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt'>Reposing all thy works upon Me and with thy heart<br \/>\nspiritually inclined, be <span class=\"SpellE\">desireless<\/span>, be selfless;<br \/>\nthen arise, fight, O <span class=\"SpellE\">Urjoona<\/span>, let the fever of thy<br \/>\nsoul pass from thee. For men who with faith and without carping&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center;line-height:200%;margin-left:0;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0'><span lang=\"EN-US\">Page \u2013 86<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style='text-align:center;line-height:12.0pt'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='color:blue'><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\">\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Section11\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style='text-align:justify;line-height:200%;margin-left:0;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0'><span lang=\"EN-US\" style='font-size:12.0pt'>follow this my Word are<br \/>\nreleased, they also, from bondage to their works; but they who carp at and<br \/>\nfollow not this my word, know of them that all their knowledge is a delusion;<br \/>\ntheir intellect is nought, they are lost men, Urjoona. Lo, even the wise man who<br \/>\nknoweth can but act according to his own essential nature; for to their nature<br \/>\nall creatures come at last, and what shall coercing it avail ? Only in the field<br \/>\nof each and every sense Jove and hate are there, and ever they lie in ambush;<br \/>\nlet not the Spirit of man fall into their clutches, for they are his adversaries<br \/>\nin his great journey. Better is it, the rule of thine own life ill done, than to<br \/>\nfollow an alien rule well-accomplished. Know him for Fiend, the Enemy of Man\u2019s soul<br \/>\nhere on earth, a great devourer, a mighty sinner. As a fire engirt with smoke,<br \/>\nas a mirror covered with dust, as the unborn child with the caul, so is the<br \/>\nuniverse by him enveloped. By him knowledge is besieged and girt round, O son of<br \/>\nCoonty, by this eternal enemy of the wise, this insatiable fire of desire and<br \/>\npassion. The senses, the soul and the overmind, these three are the places of<br \/>\nhis session, with these he cloudeth over knowledge and bewildereth the embodied<br \/>\nspirit. Therefore in the beginning constrain the senses, O Lion of the Bharatas,<br \/>\nand slay that accursed with the sword of Knowledge and Discern\u00adment. High, say<br \/>\nthe wise, reign the senses, but the heart is higher than they; and the overmind<br \/>\nis higher than the heart; he who is higher than the overmind, that is He.
