Page 89<\/font><\/p>\n reality the Vice-Pope, you can imagine the pomp of the<\/i><\/p>\n funeral ceremony, with representatives from the French<\/i><\/p>\n government, the French Academy, the Italian govern<\/i><\/p>\n ment, etc.: one full week of ceremonies. Being his<\/i><\/p>\n secretary, I had to organize everything. I am very<\/i><\/p>\n tired…. Msgr. R. very much suffered from this loss. I<\/i><\/p>\n think he will be coming to you in a few weeks, or a<\/i><\/p>\n month at most: he is determined to get out. Many things<\/i><\/p>\n have happened since his meeting with Mother …. A.R. Archbishop of Pondicherry<\/p>\n Venerable Lord,<\/i><\/p>\n As Your Excellency knows, I have directed the Holy Congre<\/i><\/p>\n one of my most cherished memories is the journey I made to <\/i>\n <\/p>\n your beloved country in 1953. I have always held a keen interest<\/i><\/p>\n in your great nation, but even more so after I visited it. It was <\/i>\n <\/p>\n thus with a very special pleasure that I accompanied His<\/i><\/p>\n Holiness Pope Paul VI to the International Eucharistic Con<\/i><\/p>\n gress in Bombay.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n On that occasion, the Holy Father expressed the wish to<\/i><\/p>\n come in contact with representatives of your country’s main<\/i><\/p>\n religious movements, and I know, Excellency, that he was<\/i><\/p>\n given a biography of Sri Aurobindo.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n It is in fact in connection with the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in<\/i><\/p>\n Pondicherry Excellency. I am sure you are aware of the reputation it has <\/i>\n <\/p>\n earned beyond India’s borders; I have been following its work<\/i><\/p>\n and achievements for years. Recently, I was told of the difficul<\/i><\/p>\n ties encountered by those in charge of the Ashram in regard to<\/i><\/p>\n Page 90<\/font><\/p>\n the proposed creation of a university – a project expressly <\/i>\n <\/p>\n favored by the Indian Government; some Catholic students, in<\/i><\/p>\n conjunction with a few priests, are displaying a strong opposi<\/i><\/p>\n tion to this project.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n I therefore request Your Excellency kindly to use his<\/i><\/p>\n authority be highly detrimental to the harmony that His Holiness Pope<\/i><\/p>\n Paul VI so much desires, in accord with the rules laid down by<\/i><\/p>\n the Ecumenical Council Vatican II.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n With gratitude, I remain, Venerable Lord,<\/i><\/p>\n respectfully and faithfully yours,<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n Signed: Eugene Card.
