\nStates-General of His Empire*<\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nThen with a far reverberating sound <\/span><\/p>\n

As of a cloud in heaven or war-drum\u2019s call <\/span><\/p>\n

Deep-voiced to battle and with echoings<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

In the wide roof of his majestic voice <\/span><\/p>\n

That like the resonant surges onward rolled <\/span><\/p>\n

Moving men\u2019s hearts to joy, a King to Kings <\/span><\/p>\n

He spoke and all they heard him.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

                                           \u201cIt is known <\/span><\/p>\n

To you, O princes, how this noblest realm <\/span><\/p>\n

Was by my fathers ruled, the kings of old <\/span><\/p>\n

Who went before me, even as one dearest son <\/span><\/p>\n

Is by his parents cherished; therefore I too <\/span><\/p>\n

Would happier leave than when my youth assumed <\/span><\/p>\n

Their burden, mankind, my subjects, and this vast <\/span><\/p>\n

World-empire of the old Ikshwacou<\/span> kings. <\/span><\/p>\n

Lo, I have trod in those imperial steps <\/span><\/p>\n

My fathers left, guarding with sleepless toil <\/span><\/p>\n

The people while strength was patient in this frame <\/span><\/p>\n

O\u2019erburdened<\/span><\/span> with
\nthe large majestic world. <\/span><\/p>\n

But now my body broken is and old, <\/span><\/p>\n

Aging beneath the shadow of the white <\/span><\/p>\n

Canopy imperial and outworn with long <\/span><\/p>\n

Labouring<\/span><\/span> for the
\ngood of all mankind. <\/span><\/p>\n

My people. Nature fails me! I have lived <\/span><\/p>\n

Thousands of years and many lives of men <\/span><\/p>\n

And all my worn heart wearies for repose. <\/span><\/p>\n

Weary am I of bearing up this heavy <\/span><\/p>\n

Burden austere of the great world, duties <\/span><\/p>\n

Not sufferable by souls undisciplined:<\/span><\/p>\n

O folk, to rest from greatness I desire. <\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore with your august, assembled will, <\/span><\/p>\n

O powers and O twice-born nations, I <\/span><\/p>\n

Would share with Rama<\/span> this great kingdom\u2019s
\ncrown, <\/span><\/p>\n

\nson, son by kingly birth<\/span><\/p>\n

And by gifts inherited confessed my son, <\/span><\/p>\n

Rama<\/span><\/span>, a mighty
\nnation\u2019s joy. Less fair, <\/span><\/p>\n

Yoked with his favouring<\/span> constellation
\nbright, <\/span><\/p>\n

The regent moon shall be than Rama\u2019s<\/span> face,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

When morn upon his crowning smiles. O folk, <\/span><\/p>\n

Say then shall Luxman\u2019s<\/span> brother be your
\nlord, <\/span><\/p>\n

Glory\u2019s high favourite<\/span> who empire
\nbreathes? <\/span><\/p>\n

Yea, if the whole vast universe should own <\/span><\/p>\n

My son for king, it would be kinged<\/span> indeed
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

And regal: Lords, of such desirable <\/span><\/p>\n

Fortune I would possess this mother of men;<\/span><\/p>\n

Then would I be at peace, at last repose <\/span><\/p>\n

Transferring to such shoulders Earth. Pronounce <\/span><\/p>\n

If I have nobly planned, if counselled<\/span>
\nwell;<\/span><\/p>\n

Grant me your high permissive voices; people, <\/span><\/p>\n

But if my narrower pleasure, private hope, <\/span><\/p>\n

Of welfare general the smooth disguise<\/span><\/p>\n

Have in your censure donned, then let the folk <\/span><\/p>\n

Themselves advise their monarch or command. <\/span><\/p>\n

For other is disinterested thought <\/span><\/p>\n

And by the clash of minds dissimilar <\/span><\/p>\n

Counsel increases.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Then with a deep sound <\/span><\/p>\n

As when a cloud with rain and thunder armed <\/span><\/p>\n

Invades the skies, the jewelled<\/span> peacocks
\nloud <\/span><\/p>\n

Clamour<\/span><\/span>, assembled
\nmonarchs praised their king. <\/span><\/p>\n

And like a moving echo came the voice <\/span><\/p>\n

Of the great commons answering them, a thunder <\/span><\/p>\n

And one exultant roar. Earth seemed to rock <\/span><\/p>\n

Beneath the noise. Thus by their Emperor high <\/span><\/p>\n

Of the people metropolitan: all these <\/span><\/p>\n

Deliberated and became one mind. <\/span><\/p>\n

Resolved, they answered then their aged king.<\/span><\/p>\n
