Ordinarily, when a man<br \/>\nis absorbed in thought and dead to all that is going on around<br \/>\nhim, he is supposed to be in <i>dhy&#257;na<\/i>.<b> <\/b> Or concentration of the<br \/>\nwhole thought on a single object to the exclusion of every other,<br \/>\nis called <i>dhy&#257;na<\/i>. But neither of these ideas corresponds exactly<br \/>\nwith the whole truth; they represent only particular stages of the<br \/>\nprocess of meditation. <i>Dhy&#257;na<\/i> is a wide term covering a number<br \/>\nof processes which rise from ordinary attention to <i>nirvikalpa<br \/>\nsam&#257;dhi<\/i>.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">The distinguishing feature of <i>dhy&#257;na <\/i>is that it puts out a<br \/>\nsteady force of knowledge on the object of knowledge. When<br \/>\nthis process is successful, when there is a steady demand on the<br \/>\nobject to give up its secret, it is called by Patanjali <i>samyama<\/i>.<i><br \/>\n<\/i>Even when it is only partially successful, it is called <i>dhy&#257;na<\/i>.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">Ordinary thought is not <i>dhy&#257;na<\/i>. Ordinary thought is simply<br \/>\nthe restlessness of the mind playing with associations, speculations, trains of reasoning. In order to have <i><br \/>\ndhy&#257;na<\/i>, the restlessness of the mind must be utterly settled, the intellect must become<br \/>\nlike a calm and waveless sea, not a ripple on its surface.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">The principle is that all knowledge is in oneself, in the<br \/>\nknower. The knower<b> <\/b> is in myself;<b> <\/b> he is also in the object of<br \/>\nknowledge, e.g., a stone or a tree. By <i>dhy&#257;na<\/i> the veil of ignorance,<br \/>\nthe chaos of misunderstandings which interfere between the<br \/>\nknower in me and the knower in the tree or the stone is removed;<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">we enter into relation with each other; we are in Yoga. All<br \/>\nknowledge about the stone is in the stone itself; in <i>dhy&#257;na <\/i>it<i> <\/i>comes into my mind. When it comes into my mind, the knower<br \/>\nin me says: &quot;It is true, the knowledge is in me also and I see it<br \/>\nthere.&quot; Or, if there is a mistake, he says, &quot;There is a mistake, the<br \/>\nmind is interfering; the knowledge is in me and I see it otherwise.&quot;<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font size=\"2\">Page <\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\" face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 450<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">The whole world is one. The knower in the stone and the<br \/>\nknower in myself are one; I am He. It is God in me. God in the<br \/>\nstone. The knowledge in me and the knowledge in the stone are<br \/>\none; I am that. It is God in me. God in the stone. The stone is<br \/>\nan object of knowledge, I am also an object of knowledge. These<br \/>\ntwo also are one. God as myself. God as the stone. God is the<br \/>\nonly object of knowledge, there is no other. God is the only<br \/>\nknower, there is no other. God is the knowledge also. <i>J\u00f1&#257;ta<\/i>,<i> j\u00f1&#257;nam<\/i>,<i> j\u00f1eyam<\/i>, they are one.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">The mind creates difference. When there is disturbance on<br \/>\nthe waters, there are many waves, and each wave cries, &quot;I am I,<br \/>\nI am I; you are you; we are different.&quot; When the sea sinks to<br \/>\nrest, the waves as they go inward, no longer cry, &quot;I am I&quot;, but<br \/>\n&quot;I am He&quot;. The still and waveless sea, that is a delightful and<br \/>\nbeautiful condition. The stormy, myriad-crested ocean, that also<br \/>\nis a very beautiful and delightful condition. Only let the waves<br \/>\nhave the knowledge, let them say, &quot;I am I for the sake of delight;<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">you are you for the sake of delight. But also you are<b> <\/b> I, I am you.<br \/>\nAnd both you and I are<b> <\/b> He.&quot; That <i>is j\u00f1&#257;nam<\/i>, that is Yoga.<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">The still sea is a condition, and the thousand waves are a<br \/>\ncondition. He who is the sea, is more than disturbance, more<br \/>\nthan stillness. He contains All. He is All. It is they who build the<br \/>\nuniverse with their thoughts and imaginations. Vishnu or Virat<br \/>\nputs them in front each in turn and they govern each a cycle. All<br \/>\nthe sons of immortality come forth from them and return to<br \/>\nthem, all the children of Earth are their portions. One stands in<br \/>\nfront, the others incarnate to help him. They are God Himself in<br \/>\nHis fourfold manifestation. He is Ishwara, Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu. Lordship is<br \/>\nHis manifestation, Might and Wisdom are His <i>gun&#803;as<\/i>. Balarama<br \/>\nis the second Power. Force is His manifestation; strength and<br \/>\nwrath are His attributes. Pradyumna is the third Power. Love<br \/>\nis His manifestation; sweetness and delight are His attributes.<br \/>\nAniruddha is the fourth Power. He has<br \/>\nthe divine Knowledge and uses His might under the guidance<br \/>\nof the Knowledge. Balarama is the Kshatriya. He allows Srikrishna in Him to guide His strength and wrath, but He does not<br \/>\nguide them Himself, He enjoys them. He is Rudra. Pradyumna<br \/>\nis the Vaishya. He is for <i>d&#257;na<\/i>,<i> prema<\/i>,<i> karun&#803;&#257;<\/i>. He gives Himself to men and buys their love in exchange. He is the uni-<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-indent: 24pt;line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font size=\"2\">Page <\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\" face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 452<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">versal philanthropist. The Treta is full of Balarama;<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">the Chakravarti Raja is the incarnation of the Treta; it is full of<br \/>\ngreat wars and mighty sacrifices. The Dwapara is full of Pradyumna. He prepares in the Dwapara the love which supports<br \/>\nmen through the Kali. Aniruddha, the Sudra reigns in the Kali.<br \/>\nHe breaks the ancient moulds. He shatters to pieces the <i>&#257;c&#257;ra<\/i>,<i><br \/>\n<\/i>He questions everything, destroys everything, levels everything,<br \/>\nrebuilds everything.
