\n\tThe Human Cobra<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\tAvoid the evil man with
\n\tlearning crowned.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t        Lo, the dread cobra, all his
\n\thood a gem <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tOf glory, yet he crawls upon the
\n\tground.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Fear\u2019st thou him less for
\n\tthat bright diadem?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tVirtue and Slander<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A spiritless dull block call
\n\tmodesty;<\/span><\/p>\n

Love of long fasts and holy
\n\tvows must be<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tMere shows, yon pure heart but a
\n\tPharisee, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe world-renouncing sage a
\n\tfool; the high <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWorld-conquering hero\u2019s taxed
\n\twith cruelty. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThis sweet word\u2019s baseness, that
\n\tgreat orator<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t        A windbag, and the great spirit
\n\tfurious pride, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAnd calm patience an impotent
\n\tweakness poor.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t        Thus the base-natured all high
\n\tthings deride. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tJudged by the slanderous tongue,
\n\tthe uncandid eyes, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWhat brightest virtue turns not
\n\tblackest vice?<\/span><\/div>\n

\n\tSeven griefs are as seven
\n\tdaggers in my heart, \u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t         To see a lake without its lilied
\n\tbloom, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe moon grow beggared of her
\n\tradiant part,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t        Sweet woman\u2019s beauty fade
\n\ttowards the tomb, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tA noble hug his wealth, a good
\n\tman gone<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tDown in the press of miseries, a
\n\tfair<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAnd vacant face when knowledge
\n\tis not there, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tA base man standing by a monarch\u2019s throne.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe Friendship of
\n\tTyrants<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\tTyrants have neither kin nor
\n\tlover. Fire<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t         Accepts the rich man\u2019s
\n\tofferings; at the end <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tShall these then slake its
\n\twrathful swift desire?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t         Nay, let him touch it! It will
\n\tspare its friend!<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe Hard Lot of the Courtier<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\n\tHard is the courtier\u2019s lot who
\n\tfain would please.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tBeing silent, \u201cLo the dumb man!\u201d
\n\tthey gibe; if speech<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tEloquent edge his wit, \u201cHe seeks
\n\tto teach, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe chatterer!\u201d else, \u201cHark to his flatteries!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tRude, if he sit near; far,\u2014\u201dWhat want of ease!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t       Enduring insult, \u201cCoward!\u201d; if
\n\the spurn <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe injurer, \u201cSurely a spawn of parents base!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t        Such service is in courts, whose
\n\tlaws to learn <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWise sages are perplexed,
\n\tor tread its ways.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Upstart<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/p>\n

\n\tYea, how this high sun burns that was so low, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t      Enlightening with his favours all things base! <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t      Hating all goods, with chainless license vile<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tOf those his filthy deeds makes
\n\tarrogant show <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t      Obscurely engendered in his unseen days <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t      Ere sudden fortune raised from miry soil.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tNo virtue now, genius nor
\n\tmerit\u2019s safe<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tFrom vulture eyes that at all cleanness chafe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t <\/p>\n


\n\tTwo Kinds of
\n\tFriendship<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n\tLike shadows of the
\n\tafternoon and mom<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tFriendship in good men is and in
\n\tthe base;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAll vast the lewd man\u2019s in its
\n\tfirst embrace,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tBut lessens and wears away; the
\n\tother\u2019s, born <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t       A dwarfish thing, grows
\n\tgiant-like apace.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tTrust not thy innocence, nor

\n\tThe deer\u2019s content with simple
\n\tgrass, yet bow<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t      Of hunter fears; the fisher\u2019s net is hurled <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tTo catch the water\u2019s innocents;
\n\this high<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t       And simple life contented leads the good, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tYet by the evil heart insatiably<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t      With causeless hatred finds
\n\thimself pursued. <\/span><\/p>\n
