Coshala<\/span><\/span>, by the Soroyou<\/span>, a land <\/span><\/p>\n

Smiling at heaven, of riches measureless <\/span><\/p>\n

And corn abounding glad; in that great country <\/span><\/p>\n

Ayodhya<\/span><\/span> was, the
\ncity world-renowned, <\/span><\/p>\n

Ayodhya<\/span><\/span> by King Manou<\/span> built, immense. <\/span><\/p>\n

Twelve yojans<\/span> long the mighty city lay <\/span><\/p>\n

Grandiose and wide three yojans<\/span>. Grandly
\nspaced <\/span><\/p>\n

Ayodhya\u2019s<\/span><\/span> streets
\nwere and the long highroad <\/span><\/p>\n

Ran through it spaciously with sweet cool flowers <\/span><\/p>\n

Hourly new-paved and hourly watered wide. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dussarutha<\/span><\/span> in Ayodhya<\/span>, as in heaven <\/span><\/p>\n

Its natural lord, abode, those massive walls <\/span><\/p>\n

Ruling, and a great people in his name <\/span><\/p>\n

Felt greater, \u2014 door and wall and ponderous arch <\/span><\/p>\n

And market places huge. Of every craft <\/span><\/p>\n

Engines mechanical and tools there thronged, <\/span><\/p>\n

And craftsmen of each guild and manner. High rang <\/span><\/p>\n

With heralds and sonorous eulogists <\/span><\/p>\n

The beautiful bright city imperial. <\/span><\/p>\n

High were her bannered edifices reared, <\/span><\/p>\n

With theatres and dancing-halls for joy <\/span><\/p>\n

Of her bright daughters, and sweet-scented parks <\/span><\/p>\n

Were round and gardens cool. High circling all <\/span><\/p>\n

The city with disastrous engines stored <\/span><\/p>\n

In hundreds, the great ramparts like a zone <\/span><\/p>\n

Of iron spanned in her moated<\/span> girth
\nimmense <\/span><\/p>\n

Threatening with forts the ancient sky. Defiant <\/span><\/p>\n

Ayodhya<\/span><\/span> stood,
\narmed, impregnable, <\/span><\/p>\n

Inviolable in her virgin walls. <\/span><\/p>\n

And in her streets was ever large turmoil, <\/span><\/p>\n

Passing of elephants, the steed and ox, <\/span><\/p>\n

Mules and rich-laden camels. And through them drove <\/span><\/p>\n

The powerful barons of the land, great wardens <\/span><\/p>\n

Of taxes, and from countries near and far <\/span><\/p>\n

The splendid merchants came much marvelling<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

With jewels curiously fretted, topped <\/span><\/p>\n

With summer houses for the joy of girls, <\/span><\/p>\n

Like some proud city in heaven. Without a gap <\/span><\/p>\n

On either side as far as eye could reach <\/span><\/p>\n

Mass upon serried mass the houses rose, <\/span><\/p>\n

Seven-storied architectures metrical<\/span><\/p>\n

Splendid Ayodhya<\/span> octagonally<\/span>
\nbuilt,<\/span><\/p>\n

The mother of beautiful women and of gems<\/span><\/p>\n

A world. Large granaries of rice unhusked<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She had and husked rice for the fire, and sweet<\/span><\/p>\n

Her water, like the cane\u2019s delightful juice,<\/span><\/p>\n

Cool down the throat. And a great voice throbbed of drums,<\/span><\/p>\n

The tabour<\/span> and the tambourine, while ever<\/span><\/p>\n

The lyre with softer rumours<\/span> intervened.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nor only was she grandiosely built,<\/span><\/p>\n

A city without earthly peer, \u2014 her sons<\/span><\/p>\n

Were noble, warriors whose arrows scorned to pierce<\/span><\/p>\n

The isolated man from friends cut off<\/span><\/p>\n

Or guided by a sound to smite the alarmed<\/span><\/p>\n

And crouching fugitive, but with sharp steel<\/span><\/p>\n

Sought out the lion in his den or grappling<\/span><\/p>\n

Unarmed they murdered with their mighty hands<\/span><\/p>\n

The tiger roaring in his trackless woods<\/span><\/p>\n

Or the mad tusked boar. Even such strong arms<\/span><\/p>\n

Of heroes kept that city and in her midst<\/span><\/p>\n

Regnant king Dussaruth<\/span> the nations ruled.<\/span><\/p>\n
