Anarchic.
\nStrange disorders threatened Space. <\/span><\/p>\n

There
\nwas a tumult in the calm abodes,<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nclash of arms, a thunder of defeat. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hearing
\nthat sound our smaller physical home <\/span><\/p>\n

Trembled
\nin its pale circuits. Fearing soon <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nethereal revolt might touch its stars. <\/span><\/p>\n

Then
\nwere these knots of our toy orbits torn <\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nlike a falling leaf this world might sink <\/span><\/p>\n

From
\nthe high tree mysterious where it hangs <\/span><\/p>\n

Between
\nthat voiceful and this silent flood. <\/span><\/p>\n

For
\nlong a mute indifference had seized <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nLord of all; no more the Mother of forms <\/span><\/p>\n

By
\nthe persuasion of her clinging arms <\/span><\/p>\n

Bound
\nhim to bear the burden of her works. <\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore
\nwith a slow dreadful confidence <\/span><\/p>\n

Chaos
\nhad lifted his gigantic head. <\/span><\/p>\n

His
\nmovement stole, a shadow on the skies, <\/span><\/p>\n

Out
\nof the dark inconscience where he hides.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Breaking the tread of the eternal dance <\/span><\/p>\n

Voices
\nwere heard life’s music shudders at, <\/span><\/p>\n

Thoughts
\nwere abroad no living mind can bear, <\/span><\/p>\n

Enormous
\nrhythms had disturbed the gods <\/span><\/p>\n

Of
\nwhich they knew not the stupendous law, <\/span><\/p>\n

And
\ntaking new amorphous giant shapes <\/span><\/p>\n

Desires
\nthe primal harmonies repel <\/span><\/p>\n

Fixed
\ndreadful eyes upon their coveted heavens. <\/span><\/p>\n

Awhile
\nthey found no form could clothe their strength, <\/span><\/p>\n

No
\nspirit who could brook their feet of fire <\/span><\/p>\n

Gave
\nthem his aspirations for their home. <\/span><\/p>\n

Only
\nin the invisible heart of things <\/span><\/p>\n

A
\ndread unease and expectation lived, <\/span><\/p>\n

Which
\nfelt immeasurable energies <\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nhuge revolt against the established world.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But
\nnow awake to the fierce nether gods<\/span><\/p>\n

Tarak
\nthe Titan rose; and the gods fled<\/span><\/p>\n

Before
\nhim driven in a luminous rout. <\/span><\/p>\n

Rumours
\nof an unalterable defeat <\/span><\/p>\n

Astonished
\nheaven. Like a throng of stars <\/span><\/p>\n

Drifting
\nthrough night before the clouds of doom, <\/span><\/p>\n

Like
\ngolden leaves hunted by dark-winged winds <\/span><\/p>\n

They
\nfled back to their old delightful seats, <\/span><\/p>\n

Nor
\nthere found refuge. Bent to a Titan yoke <\/span><\/p>\n

They
\nsuffered, till their scourged defeated thoughts <\/span><\/p>\n

Turned
\nsuppliants to a greater seat above. <\/span><\/p>\n

There
\nthe Self-born who weaves from his deep heart <\/span><\/p>\n

Harmonious
\nspaces, sits concealed and watches <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\ninviolable cycles of his soul. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thither
\nascending difficult roads of sleep <\/span><\/p>\n

Those
\ncolonists of heaven, the violent strength <\/span><\/p>\n

Of
\nthunderous Indra flashing in their front, <\/span><\/p>\n

Climbed
\nup with labour to their mighty Source. <\/span><\/p>\n

But
\nas they neared, but as their yearning reached, . <\/span><\/p>\n

Before
\nthem from the eternal secrecy <\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nForm grew manifest from all their forms. <\/span><\/p>\n

A
\ngreat brow seemed to face them everywhere, <\/span><\/p>\n

Eyes
\nwhich survey the threads of Space looked forth, <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nlips whose words are Nature’s ordinances <\/span><\/p>\n

Were
\nvisible. Then as at dawn the sun <\/span><\/p>\n

Smiles
\nupon listless pools and at each smile <\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nsleeping lotus wakes, so on them shone <\/span><\/p>\n

That
\nglory and awoke to bloom and life <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\ndrooping beauty of those tarnished gods. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thus
\nwith high voices echoing his word <\/span><\/p>\n

They
\nhymned their great Creator where he sits <\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nthe mystic lotus musing out his worlds:<\/span><\/p>\n

"Pure
\nSpirit who wast before creation woke, <\/span><\/p>\n

Calm
\nviolence, destroyer, gulf of Soul, <\/span><\/p>\n

One,
\nthough divided in thy own conceit, <\/span><\/p>\n

Brahma
\nwe see thee here, who from thy deeps <\/span><\/p>\n

Of
\nmemory rescuest forgotten Time, <\/span><\/p>\n

We
\nsee thee, Yogin, on the solemn snows,<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nadore thee, Vishnu, whose eternal steps <\/span><\/p>\n

To
\nthee are casual footprints yet thy small base <\/span><\/p>\n

For
\nluminous systems measureless to our mind, <\/span><\/p>\n

Whose
\ndifficult touch1<\/sup> thy light and happy smile <\/span><\/p>\n

Sustains,
\nO wide discoverer of Space! <\/span><\/p>\n

To
\nthee our adoration, triune Form! <\/span><\/p>\n

Imagining
\nher triple mood thou gavest <\/span><\/p>\n

To
\nthy illimitable Nature play. <\/span><\/p>\n

When
\nnothing was except thy lonely soul <\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nthe ocean of thy being, then thou sowedst <\/span><\/p>\n

Thy
\nseed infallible, O Spirit unborn, <\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nfrom that seed a million unlike forms <\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\nvariously hast made. Thy world that moves <\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nbreathes, thy world inconscient and inert, <\/span><\/p>\n

What
\nare they but a corner of thy life ? <\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\nhast made them and preservest; if thou slayst <\/span><\/p>\n

It
\nis thy greatness. Lord. Mysterious source <\/span><\/p>\n

Of
\nall, from thee we draw this light of mind, <\/span><\/p>\n

This
\nmighty stirring and these failings dark. <\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nthee we live, by thee act thy thoughts, <\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\ngrewest thyself a Woman and divine. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\ngrewest twain who wert the formless One, <\/span><\/p>\n

In
\none sole body thou wert Lord and Spouse <\/span><\/p>\n

To
\nfound the bliss which by division joins, <\/span><\/p>\n

Then
\nborest thy being, a spirit who is Man. <\/span><\/p>\n

All
\nare thy creatures: in the meeting vast <\/span><\/p>\n

Of
\nthy swift Nature with thy brilliant Mind, <\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\nmadest thy children, man and beast and god. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thy
\ndays and nights are numberless aeons; when <\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\nsleepest, all things sleep, O conscient God;<\/span><\/p>\n

Thy
\nwaking is a birth of countless souls. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\nart the womb from which all life arose. <\/span><\/p>\n

But
\nwho begot thee ? thou the ender of things, <\/span><\/p>\n

But
\nwho has known thy end ? Beginningless, <\/span><\/p>\n

By
\nthy ineffable identity<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowledge
\napproaches the unknown. We seek<\/span><\/p>\n

Discoveries
\nof ourselves in distant things<\/span><\/p>\n

When
\nfirst desire stirred, the seed of mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nto existence from the plenary void<\/span><\/p>\n

Thy
\nseers built the golden bridge of thought,<\/span><\/p>\n

Out
\nof thy uncreated Ocean’s rest<\/span><\/p>\n

By
\nthy own energy thou sprangest forth,<\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\nart thy action’s path and thou its law,<\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\nart thy own vast ending and its sleep,<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nsubtle and the dense, the flowing and firm,<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nhammered close consistency of things,<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nclingings of the atoms, lightness, load,<\/span><\/p>\n

What
\nare all these things but thy shapes ? Things seen<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nsensible and things no thought has scanned,<\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\ngrewest, and all such pole and contrary<\/span><\/p>\n

Art
\nequally, O self-created God.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\nhast become all this at thy desire;<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nnothing is impossible in thee;<\/span><\/p>\n

Creation
\nis the grandeur of thy soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nchanting Veda and the threefold voice,<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nsacrifice of works, the heavenly fruit,<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nall-initiating OM, from thee,<\/span><\/p>\n

From
\nthee they sprang; out of thy ocean-heart<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nrhythms of our fathomless Words were born,<\/span><\/p>\n

They
\nname thee Nature, she the mystic law<\/span><\/p>\n

Of
\nall things done and seen who drives us, mother<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\ngiver of our spirit’s seeking, won<\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nher enormous strength though won from her.<\/span><\/p>\n

They
\nknow thee for Spirit, far above thou dwellest,<\/span><\/p>\n

Pure
\nof achievement, empty of her noise,<\/span><\/p>\n

Silent
\nspectator of thy infinite stage,<\/span><\/p>\n

Unmoved
\nin a serene tremendous calm<\/span><\/p>\n

Thou
\nviewest indifferently the grandiose scene, <\/span><\/p>\n

\nart the enjoyer and the sweet enjoyed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\nhunter and the hunted in the worlds,<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nfood, the eater, O sole Knower, sole Known!<\/span><\/p>\n

Sole
\nDreamer, this bright-imaged dream is thou<\/span><\/p>\n

Which
\nwe pursue in our miraculous minds;<\/span><\/p>\n

No
\nother thinker is or other thought. <\/span><\/p>\n


\nO
\nLord, when we bow, who from thy being came, <\/span><\/p>\n

To
\nthee in prayer, is it not thou who prayst, <\/span><\/p>\n

Spirit
\ntranscendent and eternal All?" <\/span><\/p>\n

Shedding
\na smile in whose benignancy <\/span><\/p>\n

Some
\nsweet return like pleasant sunlight glowed, <\/span><\/p>\n

Then
\nto the wise in heaven the original Seer, <\/span><\/p>\n

Maker
\nand poet of the magic spheres, <\/span><\/p>\n

Sent
\nchanting from his fourfold mouth a voice <\/span><\/p>\n

In
\nwhich were justified the powers of sound, <\/span><\/p>\n

"Welcome,
\nyou excellent mightinesses of heaven, <\/span><\/p>\n

Who
\nhold your right by self-supported strengths, <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\ncenturies for your arms. How have you risen <\/span><\/p>\n

Together
\nin one movement of great Time! <\/span><\/p>\n

Wherefore
\nbring you now your divine faces, robbed <\/span><\/p>\n

Of
\ntheir old inborn light and beauty, pale <\/span><\/p>\n

As
\nstars in winter mists dim-rayed and cold <\/span><\/p>\n

Swimming
\nthrough the dumb melancholy of heaven ? <\/span><\/p>\n

Why
\ndo I see your power dejected, frail <\/span><\/p>\n

Which
\nbounded free and lionlike through heaven ? <\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nthunder in the Python-slayer’s hand <\/span><\/p>\n

Flames
\nnot exultant, wan its darings droop, <\/span><\/p>\n

Quelled
\nis the iridescence of its dance, <\/span><\/p>\n

Its
\ndreadful beauty like a goddess shamed, <\/span><\/p>\n

Shrinks
\nback into its violated powers.1 <\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

Varuna’s
\nunescaped and awful noose <\/span><\/p>\n

Hangs
\nslack, impuissant and its ruthless coils <\/span><\/p>\n

Are
\na charmed serpent’s folds, a child can smite <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tbroken branch<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tIn an insulted sullen majesty<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHis golden arm hangs down the
\n\tknotted mace.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tDeath’s lord is wan and his
\n\ttremendous staff<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWrites idly on the soil, the
\n\tinfallible stroke<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tIs an extinguished terror, a
\n\tcharred line<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe awful script no tears could
\n\tever erase.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tO you pale
\n\tsungods<\/span> chill and shorn of fire,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHow like the vanity of painted
\n\tsuns<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tYou glow, where eyes can set
\n\ttheir mortal ray<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tDaring eternal
\n\tsplendours<\/span> with their sight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tO fallen
\n\trapidities<\/span>, you lords of speed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWith the resisted torrents’
\n\tbaffled roar<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tBack on themselves recoil your
\n\tstormy strengths,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWhy come you now like sad and
\n\tstumbling souls,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWho bounded free and
\n\tlionlike<\/span> through heaven?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAnd you, O,Rudras, how the
\n\tmatted towers<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tUpon your heads sink their
\n\tdishevelled<\/span> pride!<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tDim hang your moons along the
\n\traking twines,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tNo longer from your puissant
\n\tthroats your voice<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tChallenges leonine the peaks of
\n\tNight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWho has put down the immortal
\n\tgods ? What foe<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tStronger than strength could
\n\tmake eternal puissance vain,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAs if beyond imagination amidst<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe august immutability of law<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tSome insolent exception
\n\tunforeseen<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHad set in doubt the order of
\n\tthe stars ?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tSpeak, children, wherefore have
\n\tyou come to me?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWhat prayer is silent on your
\n\tlips <\/b>? Did I<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tNot make the circling suns and
\n\tgive to you<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe grandiose thoughts to keep.
\n\tGuardians of life,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tKeepers of the inviolable round,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWhy come you to me with defeated
\n\teyes ?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHelpers, stand you in need of

\n\tall-knowing sense,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tLord, thou hast spoken,"
\n\tBrihaspati<\/span> began,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t"The symbol of our sad defeat
\n\tand fall.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tWhat soul can hide himself from
\n\this own source ?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThy vision looks through every
\n\teye and sees<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tBeyond our
\n\tseeings<\/span>, thinks in every mind,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tPassing our pale peripheries of
\n\tlight.<\/span><\/p>\n


\n\tTarak<\/span><\/span> the Titan growing in thy smile<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAs Ocean swells beneath the
\n\tsilent moon …<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tDiscouraged from the godhead of
\n\this rays<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tIn Tarak’s<\/span>
\n\ttown the Sun dares not to burn<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tMore than can serve to unseal
\n\tthe lotus’ eyes<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tIn rippling waters of his garden
\n\tpools.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe mystic moon yields him its
\n\tnectarous heart;<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tOnly the crescent upon Shiva’s
\n\thead <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tIs safe from the desire of his
\n\tsoul. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe violent winds forget their
\n\tmightier song, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tTheir breezes through his
\n\tgardens dare not rush, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAfraid to steal the flowers upon
\n\tits boughs, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAnd only near him sobbingly can
\n\tpant <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tA flattering coolness, dreadful
\n\tbrows to fan. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe seasons are forbidden their
\n\tcycling round. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThey are his garden-keepers and
\n\tmust fill <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe branches with chaotic wealth
\n\tof flowers. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tAutumn and Spring and Summer
\n\tjoining hands<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t .. .1<\/sup> him with their
\n\tmultitudinous sweets, <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tTheir married fragrances
\n\tsurprise the air. <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tOcean his careful servant brings
\n\tto light <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe reposing jewels for his
\n\ttoys, his mine <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tOf joy is the inexorable abyss.
\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tThe serpent gods with blazing
\n\tgems at night <\/span><\/p>\n

\n\tHold up their hoods to be his
\n\tliving lamps, <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

‘ Blank in MS. <\/span><\/p>\n
