       True skill of life ? With heavenward thoughts to
\ndwell. <\/span><\/p>\n

A hero ? The heart that is o\u2019er passion lord.<\/span><\/p>\n

       A mistress ? She to loving service sworn. <\/span><\/p>\n

Best wealth? Wisdom. True happiness? The
\nsward<\/span><\/p>\n

       Of one\u2019s own country, life where it was born. <\/span><\/p>\n

A kingdom ? Swift obedience fruitful found <\/span><\/p>\n

Bloom suddenly and seem a grandiose thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Power of Goodness<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The bloom of natural goodness like a flower<\/span><\/p>\n

        Is Nature\u2019s darling, all her creatures
\nprize, <\/span><\/p>\n

And on whose body\u2019s stock its fragrant
\npower<\/span><\/p>\n

        Blossoms, all fiercest things can humanise<\/span>.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

For him red fire becomes like water pale and cool, <\/span><\/p>\n

For him heaven-threatening Ocean sinks into a pool <\/span><\/p>\n

Of quiet azure; for him the lion\u2019s heart<\/span><\/p>\n

        Tames its dire hungers to be like the hind\u2019s,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

And the fell snake unsoothed<\/span>
\nby music\u2019s art<\/span><\/p>\n

        Upon his brows in floral wreaths he binds. <\/span><\/p>\n

Poisons for him to nectar change; impassable hills <\/span><\/p>\n

Droop, gentle slopes; strong blessings grow from ruthless ills.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Truth, \u2018tis the mother of his soul\u2019s great brood, <\/span><\/p>\n

High modesty and virtue\u2019s lordly clan. <\/span><\/p>\n

Exceeding pure of heart as to a youth<\/span><\/p>\n

His mother, and like a mother to him cleaves <\/span><\/p>\n

This sweet proud goddess. Rather life he leaves <\/span><\/p>\n

And happiness puts away, not divine Truth. <\/span><\/p>\n

Others clasp some dear vice, gold, woman, wine;<\/span><\/p>\n

He keeps for Truth his passion fiery and fine.<\/span><\/p>\n

More
\nhard the heart of woman is to seize <\/span><\/p>\n

\nhard <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Her moods to follow than on
\nmountains barred <\/span><\/p>\n

With
\nrocks that skirt a dreadful precipice <\/span><\/p>\n

\ndangerous luring pathway near the skies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\ntransient is her frail exacting love<\/span><\/p>\n

Thorns

\u201cVictory is his on earth or Paradise,<\/span><\/p>\n

         For him enough that friends and foemen praise \u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\ndeathless, passionate,<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaps on his foemen and can overbear,<\/span><\/p>\n

A miracle, then, greater miracle, spare.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMan Infinite<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Earth is hemmed in with Ocean\u2019s vaster
\nmoan;<\/span><\/p>\n

        The world of waters flows not infinitely;<\/span><\/p>\n

A high unwearied traveller<\/span>, the Sun<\/span><\/p>\n

         Maps out the limits of the vaulted sky. <\/span><\/p>\n

On every creature born a seal is set <\/span><\/p>\n

With limits budded in, kept separate. <\/span><\/p>\n

Only man\u2019s soul looks out with luminous eyes <\/span><\/p>\n

Upon the worlds inimitably wise.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Proud Soul\u2019s Choice<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

But
\none God to worship, hermit Shiv<\/span> or puissant Vishnu,

But one friend to clasp, the first of men or proud Philosophy;<\/span><\/p>\n

But one home to live in. Earth\u2019s imperial city or the wild;<\/span><\/p>\n

But one wife to kiss. Earth\u2019s sweetest face
\nor Nature, God\u2019s own child. <\/span><\/p>\n

Either in your world the mightiest or my

         Symbol of minds impure, perplexed and wry. <\/span><\/p>\n

Though constant be the strife and claim,

Escapes the sin-driven and the doubting
\nsoul.<\/span><\/p>\n

The inanimate tabour<\/span>, lo,
\nwith flour well-glued<\/span><\/p>\n

Begins with sweeter voice its song to
\ncroon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Rarity of the Altruist<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Low minds enough there are who only care<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n       To fill their lusts with pleasure, maws with food.
\n<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Where shall we find him, the high soul and
\nrare<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n        To whom the good of
\nothers is his good? <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nFirst of the saints is he, first of the
\nwise.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nThe Red Mare of the Ocean drinks the seas<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nHer own insatiable fire to feed;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe cloud for greater
\nends exacts his need, <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\nThe parching heats to cool. Earth\u2019s pain

Anxious their task, no work of splendid ease!<\/span><\/p>\n

        One ranges far for costly words, prepares <\/span><\/p>\n

Pure forms and violence popular disdains,<\/span><\/p>\n

        The voice of rare assemblies strives to find, <\/span><\/p>\n

Slowly adds phrase to noble phrase and means<\/span><\/p>\n

        Each line around the human heart to wind\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n

The statesman seeks the nation\u2019s wealth from far;<\/span><\/p>\n

        Not to the easy way of violence prone <\/span><\/p>\n

He puts from him the brutal clang of war<\/span><\/p>\n

        And seeks a better kind dominion, <\/span><\/p>\n

To please the just in their assemblies high,<\/span><\/p>\n

        Slowly to build his careful steps between <\/span><\/p>\n

A noble line of linked policy, \u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

He shapes his acts a nation\u2019s heart to win.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their burden and their toil make these two
\nkin.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Words of the Wise<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Serve
\nthou the wise and good, covet their speech <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Although to trivial daily things it
\nkeeps. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Their casual thoughts are foam from
\nsolemn deeps;<\/span><\/p>\n

Their
\npassing words make Scripture, Science; rich, <\/span><\/p>\n

Though

\nsome day by some chance God thought this good <\/span><\/p>\n

Kind
\nactions, of the noble nature part, <\/span><\/p>\n

\nin bad men a cold and cruel heart. <\/span><\/p>\n

Better
\nto a dire verge by foemen borne, <\/span><\/p>\n

Renounce thy vain attempt, presumptuous

That the great heart for misery falter can:<\/span><\/p>\n

         Fruitless thy hope that cruel fall to see. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dull soul! these are not petty transient

         Himalay<\/span><\/span> and Mahendra<\/span> and the rest, <\/span><\/p>\n

Nor your poor oceans, their fixed course
\nand wills<\/span><\/p>\n

         That yield by the last cataclysm oppressed. <\/span><\/p>\n

Man\u2019s will his shattered world can long
\nsurvive:<\/span><\/p>\n

         When all has perished, it can dare to live.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Splendid Harlot<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Victory\u2019s a harlot full of glorious lust<\/span><\/p>\n

Who seeks the hero\u2019s breast with wounds
\ndeep-scored, <\/span><\/p>\n

Hate\u2019s passionate dints like love\u2019s! So
\nwhen the sword<\/span><\/p>\n

Has ploughed its field, leap there she feels she must.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFate<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Lo, the moon who gives to healing herbs their virtue,
\nnectar\u2019s home,<\/span><\/p>\n

Food immortalising<\/span>, \u2014 every

Even him consumption seizes in its cruel clinging
\narms. <\/span><\/p>\n

Then be ready! Fate takes all her toll and heeds not
\ngifts nor charms,<\/span><\/p>\n

        Weaving with arduous toil a transient thread <\/span><\/p>\n

Of shining deeds on careful virtue spun ? <\/span><\/p>\n

        Which easily broken, all at once is sped;<\/span><\/p>\n

As when in lover\u2019s amorous war undone<\/span><\/p>\n

         A pearl-string, on all sides the bright
