\nhad heard <\/span><\/p>\n

The sages\u2019 speech, his heart
\nwas moved with sighs <\/span><\/p>\n

He coveted Imperial Sacrifice.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

All bliss went from him.
\nOnly to his thought <\/span><\/p>\n

The majesty of royal saints
\nwas brought <\/span><\/p>\n

By sacrifice exalted.
\nParadise <\/span><\/p>\n

Acquired augustly, and
\nbefore his eyes <\/span><\/p>\n

He most was luminous who in
\nheaven shone, <\/span><\/p>\n

Heaven by sacrificial merit
\nwon. <\/span><\/p>\n

He too that offering would
\nabsolve; so now <\/span><\/p>\n

Receiving reverence with a
\ncourteous brow, <\/span><\/p>\n

The assembly broke, to
\nmeditate retiring <\/span><\/p>\n

On that great sacrifice of
\nhis desiring. <\/span><\/p>\n

Frequent the thought and
\never all its length <\/span><\/p>\n

His mind leaned that way.
\nYet though huge his strength, <\/span><\/p>\n

His heroism though admired,
\nthe King <\/span><\/p>\n

Forgot no Right, but
\npondered how this thing <\/span><\/p>\n

Might touch the peoples,
\nwhether well or ill. <\/span><\/p>\n

For just was Yudhishthere
\nand courted still <\/span><\/p>\n

His people and with vast
\nimpartial mind <\/span><\/p>\n

Served all, nor ever from this
\nword declined, <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo each his own; nor shall
\nthe king disturb <\/span><\/p>\n

With wrath or violence
\nRight, but these shall curb.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo was all speech of men
\none grand acclaim;<\/span><\/p>\n

The nation as a father
\ntrusted him:<\/span><\/p>\n

No hater had he in his whole
\nrealm\u2019s bound, <\/span><\/p>\n

By the sweet name of
\nEnemiless renowned. <\/span><\/p>\n

And through his gracious
\ngovernment upheld By <\/span><\/p>\n

Bheema\u2019s force and foreign
\nbattle quelled <\/span><\/p>\n

By the two-handed might of
\ngreat Arjoon;<\/span><\/p>\n

Sahadev\u2019s cultured equity
\nand boon <\/span><\/p>\n

Nokula\u2019s courteous mood to
\nall men shown, <\/span><\/p>\n

The thriving provinces were
\nvoid of fear;<\/span><\/p>\n

Strife was forgotten and
\neach liberal year<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The rains were measured to
\ndesire; nor man <\/span><\/p>\n

The natural limit of his
\ncourse outran:<\/span><\/p>\n

Usury, tillage, rearing,
\nmerchandise<\/span><\/p>\n

Throve with good government
\nand sacrifice<\/span><\/p>\n

Prospered; rack-renting was
\nnot nor unjust<\/span><\/p>\n

Extortion; from the land
\npestilence was thrust,<\/span><\/p>\n

And mad calamity of fire
\nunknown<\/span><\/p>\n

Became while this just
\nmonarch had his own.<\/span><\/p>\n

Robbers and cheats and royal
\nfavourites<\/span><\/p>\n

Were now not heard of to infringe
\nmen\u2019s rights<\/span><\/p>\n

Nor the king\u2019s harm nor
\nmutual injury<\/span><\/p>\n

Intrigue. To yield into his
\ntreasury<\/span><\/p>\n

Their taxes traders came and
\nprinces high<\/span><\/p>\n

On the sixfold pretexts of
\npolicy,<\/span><\/p>\n

Or at Yudhisthere\u2019s court
\ngood grace to win.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even greedy, passionate,
\nluxurious men<\/span><\/p>\n

His just rule to the common
\nwelfare turned.<\/span><\/p>\n

He in the glory of all
\nvirtues burned,<\/span><\/p>\n

An all-pervading man, by all
\nadored,<\/span><\/p>\n

An emperor and universal
\nlord<\/span><\/p>\n

Bearing upon his shoulders
\nthe whole State,<\/span><\/p>\n

And from the neat-herd to
\nthe twice-born great<\/span><\/p>\n

All in his wide domains that
\nlived and moved,<\/span><\/p>\n

Him more than father, more
\nthan mother loved.<\/span><\/p>\n

He now his brothers and his
\nministers<\/span><\/p>\n

Summoning severally their
\nmind infers<\/span><\/p>\n

And often with repeated
\nsubtle speech<\/span><\/p>\n

Solicitous questions and
\nrequestions each.<\/span><\/p>\n

All with one cry unanimous
\nadvise<\/span><\/p>\n

To institute Imperial
\nSacrifice.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c0 King,\u201d they said, \u201cthe
\nman by God designed<\/span><\/p>\n

Who has acquired the Oceanic
\nmind<\/span><\/p>\n

Of kingship, not with this
\nbounds his pretence,<\/span><\/p>\n

But hungers for imperial
\nexcellence.<\/span><\/p>\n

In thee it dwells, high Kaurav;
\nwe thy friends<\/span><\/p>\n

See clear that Fate this
\nsacrifice intends. <\/span><\/p>\n

To complete heroes it is
\nsubject. <\/span><\/p>\n

Men Who centre chivalry
\nwithin them gain <\/span><\/p>\n

Its sanction when with
\nancient chants the fires <\/span><\/p>\n

Are heaped by sages, lords
\nof their desires <\/span><\/p>\n

Through self-control
\nintense. The serpentine <\/span><\/p>\n

And all rites other in this
\none rite twine. <\/span><\/p>\n

And he who at its end is
\nsafely crowned <\/span><\/p>\n

Is as World Conqueror, is as
\nKing renowned. <\/span><\/p>\n

Puissance is thine,
\ngreat-armed, and we are thine. <\/span><\/p>\n

0 King, soon then shall
\nEmpire crown thy line:<\/span><\/p>\n

0 King, debate no longer;
\naim thy will <\/span><\/p>\n

At Sacrifice Imperial.\u201d So
\nthey still <\/span><\/p>\n

Advised their king together
\nand apart, <\/span><\/p>\n

And deep their accents sunk
\ninto his heart. <\/span><\/p>\n

Bold was their speech, rang
\npleasant to his ear, <\/span><\/p>\n

Seemed excellent and just,
\nyet Yudhisthere <\/span><\/p>\n

Still pondered though he
\nknew is puissance well. <\/span><\/p>\n

Again he bade his hardy
\nbrothers tell <\/span><\/p>\n

Their mind and priests
\nhigh-souled and ministers:<\/span><\/p>\n

With Dhowma and Dwypaian too
\nconfers, <\/span><\/p>\n

Wise and deliberate he.
\n\u201cSpeak justly, friends, <\/span><\/p>\n

What happy way my hard
\ndesire attends. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hard is the sacrifice
\nimperial meant <\/span><\/p>\n

For an imperial mind\u2019s
\naccomplishment.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

All answered with a
\nseasonable voice:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust King, thine is that
\nmind and thou the choice <\/span><\/p>\n

Of Fate for this high
\nceremony renowned.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Sweet did the voice of
\nfriends and flamens sound:<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet still he curbed himself
\nand still he thought. <\/span><\/p>\n

His yearning for the
\npeople\u2019s welfare wrought <\/span><\/p>\n

A noble hesitation. Wise the
\nman <\/span><\/p>\n

Who often will his power and
\nvantage scan, <\/span><\/p>\n

Who measures means with the
\nexpenditure, <\/span><\/p>\n

Season with place, then
\nacts; his deeds endure. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot with my mere resolve
\nthe enterprise <\/span><\/p>\n

Begins and ends of this
\ngreat sacrifice.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

While thus in a strong grasp
\nhis thought he held, <\/span><\/p>\n

His mind to Krishna who all
\nbeings excelled <\/span><\/p>\n

Of mortal breed, for surest
\nsurety ran, <\/span><\/p>\n

Krishna, the strong
\nunmeasurable man<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Whom Self-born upon earth
\nconjectured he <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Because his deeds measured
\nwith deity. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo Krishna\u2019s mind all
\nthings are penetrable, <\/span><\/p>\n

His genius knows not the
\nimpossible.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Pondered the son of Hades,
\n\u201cnor is there <\/span><\/p>\n

A weight his mighty mind
\ncannot upbear.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

On Krishna as on sage and
\nguide his mind <\/span><\/p>\n

(Who is indeed the guide of
\nall mankind) <\/span><\/p>\n

He fixed and sent his
\nmessenger afar <\/span><\/p>\n

To Yadav land in a
\nswift-rolling car. <\/span><\/p>\n

Then sped the rushing wheels
\nwith small delay <\/span><\/p>\n

And reached the gated city
\nDwaraca, <\/span><\/p>\n

The gated city where
\nJanardan dwelt. <\/span><\/p>\n

Krishna to Yudhishthere\u2019s
\ndesire felt <\/span><\/p>\n

Answering desire and went
\nwith Indrasen <\/span><\/p>\n

Passing through many lands
\nto Indra-Plain, <\/span><\/p>\n

Fierily passing with
\nimpetuous hooves <\/span><\/p>\n

To Indraprastha and the men
\nhe loves. <\/span><\/p>\n

With filial soul his
\nbrothers Yudhishthere <\/span><\/p>\n

And Bheem received the man
\nwithout compeer:<\/span><\/p>\n

But Krishna to his father\u2019s
\nsister went<\/span><\/p>\n

And greeted her with joyous
\nlove; then bent<\/span><\/p>\n

His heart to pleasure with
\nhis heart\u2019s own friend,<\/span><\/p>\n

While reverently the
\ncourteous twins attend.<\/span><\/p>\n

But after rest in those
\nbright halls renowned<\/span><\/p>\n

Yudhisthere sought the
\nimmortal man and found<\/span><\/p>\n

At leisure sitting and
\nrevealed his need.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cKing\u2019s Sacrifice I covet,
\nbut indeed<\/span><\/p>\n

Thou knowest not practicable
\nby will alone<\/span><\/p>\n

Like other rites is this
\nimperial one,<\/span><\/p>\n

But he in whom all kingly
\nthings combine,<\/span><\/p>\n

He whom all men, all lands
\nto honour join,<\/span><\/p>\n

A King above all kings, he
\nfinds alone<\/span><\/p>\n

Empire. And now though all
\nmy friends are one<\/span><\/p>\n

To bid me forward, I even
\nyet attend<\/span><\/p>\n

From thy voice only
\ncertainty, 0 friend.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some from affection lovingly
\nsuppress<\/span><\/p>\n

Their friend\u2019s worst fault
\nand some from selfishness, <\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking what most will
\nplease. Others conceal
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Their own good with the name
\nof commonweal.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Such counsel in his need a
\nmonarch hath.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

But thou art pure of selfish
\npurpose; wrath
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

And passion know thee not;
\nand thou wilt tell
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

What shall be solely and
\nsupremely well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n


\n <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Krishna
\nmade answer: \u201cAll thy virtues, all<\/span><\/p>\n

Thy gifts make thee the man
\nimperial.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Thou dost deserve this
\nsacrifice.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet well Though thou mayst
\nknow it, one thing will I tell.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Rama, Jamadagni\u2019s son,
\nhad slain
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The chivalry of earth, those
\nwho were fain
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

To flee, left later \u201cissue
\nto inherit
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The name of Kshatriya and
\nthe regal spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of these the rule by compact
\nof the clan
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Approved thou knowest, and
\neach high-born man
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Whate\u2019er and all the kingly
\nmultitude
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Name themselves subjects of
\ngreat Ila\u2019s brood
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

And the Ikshwaku house. Now
\nby increase
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ikshwaku Kings and Ilian
\ncount no less
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Than are a hundred clans. Of
\nall most huge
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Yayati of the Bhojas, a
\ndeluge
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Upon the earth in multitude
\nand gift.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

To these all chivalry their
\neyes uplift,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

These and their mighty
\nfortunes serve.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

But now King Jarasandha
\nlifts his diademed brow
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

And Ila and Ikshwaku pale
\ntheir fires,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

O\u2019erwhelmed. He over kings
\nand nations towers;<\/span><\/p>\n

This way and that way with
\nimpetuous hands
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Assailing overbears; the
\nmiddle lands
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Inhabits and by division
\nrules the world,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Since he in whose sole hand
\nthe earth is furled,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Who is first monarch and
\nsupreme may claim,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

He and he only, the imperial
\nname.<\/span><\/p>\n

And him the mighty hero,
\nShishupal
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Owns singly nor disdains his
\nlord to call,
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

But leads his warfare, and,
\nof captains best, <\/span><\/p>\n

The puissant man and subtle
\nstrategist,<\/span><\/p>\n

Chuccar, the Karoosh king,
\nand those two famed<\/span><\/p>\n

Brave men and high of heart,
\nand Corrusus,<\/span><\/p>\n

Duntvaccar, Maghavahan,
\nCorobhus,<\/span><\/p>\n

Great kigs; and the wide-ruler
\nof the West<\/span><\/p>\n

The Yavan lord upon whose
\ngleaming crest<\/span><\/p>\n

Burns the strange jewel
\nwonderful, whose might<\/span><\/p>\n

Is like the boundless Oceans
\ninfinite,<\/span><\/p>\n

Whose rule Narac obeys and
\nMuruland?<\/span><\/p>\n

King Bhagadutt owns
\nJarasandh\u2019s command,<\/span><\/p>\n

Thy father\u2019s ancient friend,
\nand more with hand<\/span><\/p>\n

Serves him than word. He
\nonly of the West<\/span><\/p>\n

And southern end of earth
\nwho is possessed,<\/span><\/p>\n

The hero Kuntivardhan
\nPurujit<\/span><\/p>\n

Feel for thee as a tender
\nfather might.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chained by affection to thee
\nis his heart<\/span><\/p>\n

And by affection in thy weal
\nhas part.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To Jarasandh he whom I did
\nnot slay<\/span><\/p>\n

Is gathered, he who must
\nforsooth display<\/span><\/p>\n

My signs, gives himself out
\ngod humanized<\/span><\/p>\n

And man ideal, and for such
\nis prized<\/span><\/p>\n

Now in the world, a madman
\nsoiled of soul,<\/span><\/p>\n

The tyrant of the Chedies,
\nwhose control<\/span><\/p>\n

Poundra and Keerat own, a
\nmighty lord,<\/span><\/p>\n

King of Bengal and by the
\nname adored<\/span><\/p>\n

Of Poundrian Vasudev. The
\nBhoja strong<\/span><\/p>\n

To whom wide lands, one
\nfourth of all, belong,<\/span><\/p>\n

Called friend of Indra\u2014 he
\nmade tameable<\/span><\/p>\n

Pandya and Cruth and Kayshic
\nby his skill<\/span><\/p>\n

And science, and his brother
\nAacrity<\/span><\/p>\n

Is very Parashuram in
\nprowess \u2014 he,<\/span><\/p>\n

Even Bheeshmuc, even this
\nhigh, far-conquering king<\/span><\/p>\n

To Jarasandh is vowed. We
\nworshipping,<\/span><\/p>\n

We who implore his favour,
\nwe his kin<\/span><\/p>\n

Are utterly rejected, all
\nour pain<\/span><\/p>\n

Of benefaction met with
\nsharp contempt,<\/span><\/p>\n

Benefit with harm returned
\nor evil attempt. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Shalwa, Petucchur, Kuntie.
\nBhadracar,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Susthal, Kulind, Sucutta. All that
\nare <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Of the Shalwaian kings brother or
\nfriend, <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Are with their leaders gone, nor yet
\nan end;<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0  <\/span>The Southern Panchals and in
\nKuntie-land\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0  <\/span>The Eastern Coshalas Their native
\nnorth<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0  <\/span>Abandoning-the Matsyas have gone
\nforth <\/span><\/p>\n

\nLastly <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0   <\/span>The warrior great Panchalas terrified <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span> Have left their kingdoms and to every side <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0  <\/span>Are scattering before Jarasandh\u2019s

His royal kin he
\noverpowered; nor long, <\/span><\/p>\n

Being supreme, ruled
\nprudently, but grew <\/span><\/p>\n

A tyrant and a fool.
\nWhereupon drew <\/span><\/p>\n

The Bhoja lords together, those
\nwhom tired <\/span><\/p>\n

His cruelties, and these
\nwith me conspired <\/span><\/p>\n

Seeking a national
\ndeliverer. <\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore I rose and Ahuk\u2019s
\ndaughter, her <\/span><\/p>\n

The sweet and slender, gave
\nto Acrur, \u2014 then <\/span><\/p>\n

Made free from tyranny my
\ncountrymen. <\/span><\/p>\n

With me was Ram, the
\nplougher of the foe;<\/span><\/p>\n

Our swords laid Kansa and
\nSanaaman low. <\/span><\/p>\n

Scarce was this inbred peril

One Hansa truly named, a
\nmighty king.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHansa is slain,\u201d said one

Hearing the Jumna\u2019s waters

Devoted. Without Hansa here

He had not heart to linger,
\nso is gone <\/span><\/p>\n

His way to death. Of

Hansa sacker of cities, he
\ntoo drew <\/span><\/p>\n

To the same waves that

There were they joined in

This hearing Jarasandha

With empty heart to his own

The King being gone we in

In Mathura dwelt and our

But she, the royal princess

Went to her father mourning;

Of Jarasandh and Kansa\u2019s

Spurring the mighty Maagadh,
\nweeping: \u201cKill <\/span><\/p>\n

My husband\u2019s murderer, 0 my
\nfather\u201d, and still, \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

Kill him!\u201d But we minding

With heavy hearts out from

Son, friend and kinsman, all

Three are
\nthe mountain-shoulders and each ends <\/span><\/p>\n

An equal
\nspace: hundred-gated the town. <\/span><\/p>\n

Each gate
\nwith heroism and renown <\/span><\/p>\n

Is bolted
\nand has eighteen keys close-bound, <\/span><\/p>\n

Eighteen
\nstrong bows in whom the trumpets sound <\/span><\/p>\n

Wakes
\nheadlong lust of war. Thousands as many<\/span><\/p>\n

\nMaagadh, Jarasandh, the mountain jaws<\/span><\/p>\n

Impassable

Dwell glad

So they a hecatomb of

Wait their dire ending; for
\nMagadha\u2019s King<\/span><\/p>\n

A sacrifice of princes
\npurposing,<\/span><\/p>\n

With fierce asceticism of
\nwill adored<\/span><\/p>\n

Mahadev mighty-minded, Uma\u2019s
\nlord.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conquering he moves towards
\nhis purpose, (brings<\/span><\/p>\n

Army on army, kings on
\nbattling kings,<\/span><\/p>\n

Victorious brings and binds
\nand makes of men<\/span><\/p>\n

His mountain city a huge
\ncattle-pen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Us too his puissance drove
\nin strange dismay<\/span><\/p>\n

To the fair-gated city,
\nDwaraca)<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore if of Imperial
\nSacrifice<\/span><\/p>\n

Thou art ambitious, first, 0

To rescue all those murdered

The instituted Sacrifice

\notherwise, 0 pride <\/span><\/p>\n

Of Vrishny\u2019s seed, man\u2019s
\ngreatness is espied. <\/span><\/p>\n

In calm and sweet content is
\nhighest bliss, <\/span><\/p>\n

Mine be the good that
\nsprings from chastened peace.) <\/span><\/p>\n

Or I with this attempt hope
\nnot the crown <\/span><\/p>\n

Of high supremacy to wear.
\nRenown <\/span><\/p>\n

Girds these and high-born
\nminds; and so they deem <\/span><\/p>\n

Lo I and I am warrior and
\nsupreme. <\/span><\/p>\n

But we by Jarasandha\u2019s force
\nalarmed <\/span><\/p>\n

And all his bold tyrannies
\niron-armed <\/span><\/p>\n

Shun the emprise. 0 Hero, 0
\nhigh-starred, <\/span><\/p>\n

In whose great prowess we
\nhave done and dared, <\/span><\/p>\n

In whose heroic arm our
\nsafeties dwell, <\/span><\/p>\n

Yet lo thou fearest him,
\ndeemst invincible <\/span><\/p>\n

And where thou fearest, my
\nconceit of strength <\/span><\/p>\n

Becomes a weakling\u2019s dream
\nuntil at length <\/span><\/p>\n

I hardly dare to hope by
\nstrongest men <\/span><\/p>\n

This mighty Jarasandha can
\nbe slain, <\/span><\/p>\n

Arjoon or Bheem or Rama or
\ncombined. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thou, Keshav, in all things
\nto me art mind.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Out Bhema spoke, the strong
\nman eloquent:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe unstrenuous king,
\nunhardy, unvigilant<\/span><\/p>\n

Sinks like an ant-hill; nor
\nthe weak-kneed less<\/span><\/p>\n

Who on a stranger leans his
\nhelplessness.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the unsleeping and
\n\u201cresourceful man<\/span><\/p>\n

With wide and adequate
\nattempt oft can<\/span><\/p>\n

His mightier enemy vanquish;
\nhim though feeble<\/span><\/p>\n

His wished-for good attends
\ninvariable.<\/span><\/p>\n

Krishna has policy and I
\nhave strength<\/span><\/p>\n

And with our mother\u2019s son
\nDhananjoy, length<\/span><\/p>\n

Assured of victory dwells;
\nwe shall assail<\/span><\/p>\n

Victoriously the Magadhan
\nand quell<\/span><\/p>\n

As triple fire a victim.\u201d

Maroutta, Bharat,
\nYuvanaswa\u2019s son, <\/span><\/p>\n

Great Bhagirath and
\nKartavirya old.<\/span><\/p>\n

By wealth Maroutta
\nconquered, Bharat bold <\/span><\/p>\n

By armed strength;
\nMandhata\u2019s victories <\/span><\/p>\n

Enthroned him and his subtle
\nsoul and wise. <\/span><\/p>\n

By strenuous greatness
\nKartavirya bent <\/span><\/p>\n

The world, but Bhagirath
\nbeneficent <\/span><\/p>\n

Gathered the willing nations
\nto his sway. <\/span><\/p>\n

But thou purposing like
\ngreatness, to one way <\/span><\/p>\n

Not limited, restor\u2019st the
\nimperial five. <\/span><\/p>\n

Their various masteries
\nreunited live:<\/span><\/p>\n

Virtue, high policy, wealth
\nwithout dearth <\/span><\/p>\n

And conquest and the rapid
\ngrasp at Earth \u2014 <\/span><\/p>\n

Yet these avail not to make
\nsolely great. <\/span><\/p>\n

Strong Jarasandha bars thee
\nfrom thy fate, <\/span><\/p>\n

(Whom not the hundred
\nnations can deter <\/span><\/p>\n

But with great might he
\ngrows an emperor;<\/span><\/p>\n

The jewel-sceptred kings to
\nserve him start.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet he in his unripe and
\nviolent heart)<\/span><\/p>\n

Unsatisfied, assumes the
\ntyrant\u2019s part.<\/span><\/p>\n

He, the first man of men,
\nlays his rude hand<\/span><\/p>\n

On the anointed monarchs of
\nthe land<\/span><\/p>\n

And pillages. Not one we see
\nexempt.<\/span><\/p>\n

How then shall feebler king
\nhis fall attempt?<\/span><\/p>\n

Well-nigh a hundred in his
\nsway are whelmed.<\/span><\/p>\n

With these like cattle
\ncleansed, like cattle hemmed<\/span><\/p>\n

In Shiva\u2019s house, the
\ndreadful Lord of beasts,<\/span><\/p>\n

Purified as for sacrificial
\nfeasts,<\/span><\/p>\n

Surely life\u2019s joy is turned
\nto bitterness,<\/span><\/p>\n

Not dying like heroes in the
\nbattle\u2019s press.<\/span><\/p>\n

Honour is his who in swift
\nbattle falls<\/span><\/p>\n

And best mid swords high
\ndeath to princes calls. <\/span><\/p>\n

He wins, glory most glorious

Interposing the tyrant and

Kings shall acclaim him lord

\u201cShall I, ambitious of

Krishna expose, in my mad

Urged on by naked daring,

Whom most I love ? 0
\nKrishna, what is breath <\/span><\/p>\n

To one that\u2019s mad and of his
\neyes bereft? <\/span><\/p>\n

What joy has he that life to
\nhim is left? <\/span><\/p>\n

These are my eyes\/Thou
\nKrishna art my mind, <\/span><\/p>\n

Lo, I have come as one who
\nstumbles blind <\/span><\/p>\n

Upon the trackless Ocean\u2019s

Then wakes, so I all

Upon this dreadful man whom

Dare not in battle cross.

Of hopeless effort? Mischief

Result to the too blindly

Better not undertaken, is my

On riper thought, than

Nay, let us leave this

Than with eyes open to our

For all my heart within is

Viewing the vast

Of wonders self-attained,

Unequalled bow. \u201c0 King,\u201d he

Has given me bow and shafts,

Great lands and strength,

The uncourageous that heroic
\nmen<\/span><\/p>\n

His fathers were? From
\nuncourageous sires<\/span><\/p>\n

Who springs a hero, he to
\nglory towers.<\/span><\/p>\n

That man the name of
\nKshatriya merits best<\/span><\/p>\n

Whose soul is ever to the
\nbattle drest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Courage, all gifts denied,
\nploughs through amain<\/span><\/p>\n

A sea of foes: courage
\nwithout, in vain<\/span><\/p>\n

All other gifts conspire;
\nrather all gifts<\/span><\/p>\n

Courage into a double
\nstature lifts.<\/span><\/p>\n

But conquest is in three
\ngreat strengths complete \u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

Action, capacity, fate:
\nwhere these three meet,<\/span><\/p>\n

There conquest comes; nor
\nstrengths alone suffice;<\/span><\/p>\n

Men by neglect forfeit their
\nParadise.<\/span><\/p>\n

And this the cause the
\nstrong much-hated man<\/span><\/p>\n

Before his enemies sinks.
\nHard \u2018tis to scan<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether of these flaws strength
\nmost fatally,<\/span><\/p>\n

A spirit poor or an
\no\u2019erweening eye.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both are destruction. Kings
\nwho highly aim<\/span><\/p>\n

And court success, must
\neither quite disclaim.<\/span><\/p>\n

And if by Jarasandha\u2019s
\noverthrow,<\/span><\/p>\n

Rescuing Kings, to Sacrifice
\nwe go,<\/span><\/p>\n

What fairer, what more
\nglorious ? Mighty prince,<\/span><\/p>\n

Deeds unattempted virtue
\nmaimed evince.<\/span><\/p>\n

In us when virtue dwells,
\nwhy deemst thou, brother,<\/span><\/p>\n

A nothingness the children
\nof thy mother.<\/span><\/p>\n

Easy it is the ochre gown to
\ntake<\/span><\/p>\n

Afterwards, if for holy
\ncalmness\u2019 sake<\/span><\/p>\n

We must the hermit virtues
\nimitate.<\/span><\/p>\n

But here is Empire! here a

Let others quietism\u2019s sweets

Success must come nor two

Equal can issue thence: from

But rash impolicy with

Having joined issue in their

Breed ruin huge; equality

Then doubt engenders, nor

Therefore in skilful conduct

If with our foe we grapple,

As a wild torrent wrestling
\nwith a tree <\/span><\/p>\n

Uproots and hurls it

Subtly thine own disguise,

So runs the politic maxim of
