\nI <\/b>had at first entitled the translation \u201cThe
\nCentury of Morals\u201d, but the Sanskrit word Niti has a more complex sense. It
\nincludes also policy and worldly wisdom, the rule of successful as well<\/i>
\nas the Jaw of ideal conduct and gives scope for observation of all the turns
\nand forces determining the movement of human character and action.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The
\nShataka or \u2018Century\u2019 should normally comprise a hundred epigrams, but the
\nnumber that has come down to us is considerably more. The excess is probably
\ndue to accretion and the mistaken ascription to Bhartrihari of verses not of
\nhis making but cast in his spirit and manner. <\/span><\/p>\n
