Had slain of Krishna or the hungry fire

Consumed: by thee I live, O Kunti\u2019s son:<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

What shall I do for thy sake?\u201d And Arjoon,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPaid is thy debt. Go thou and prosper: love
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Repays the lover: this our friendship prove.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNoble thy word and like thyself,\u201d returned
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Titan, \u201cyet in me a fire has burned
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Some deed to do for love\u2019s sake. He am I,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Titan architect and poet high,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

The maker: something give me to create.\u201d

Arjoon replied, \u201cIf from the grasp of Fate
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Rescued by me thou pray\u2019st, then is the deed
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Sufficient, Titan: I will take no meed.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Yet will I not deny thee: for my friend
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Do somewhat and thy debt to me shall end.\u201d<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Then by the Titan questioned Vasudev
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Pondered awhile what boon were best to have.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

At length he answered: \u201cLet a hall be raised
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Peerless, thou great artificer high-praised, \u2014
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

If thou wilt needs do somewhat high designed, \u2014<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

For Yudhisthere such hall as may thy mind
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Imagine.Wonderful the pile shall be,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

No mortal man shall copy although he
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Labour to grasp it, nor on transient earth<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Another equal wonder shall have birth.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Vast let it be. Let human and divine<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

And the Titanic meet in one design.\u201d

Joyful the builder took the word and high
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Pandav\u2019s hall he made imperially.

(But first the heroes to the King repair,

Just Yudhishthere, and all their story there<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Their living proof of great accomplishment.

Nobly he welcomed was by that just King.

There in high ease, befriended, sojourning
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

The life of elder gods dethroned of old<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The Titan to the Pandav princes told.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Short space for rest took the creative mind
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And inly planned and mightily designed
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

A hall imperial for those mighty ones.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

With Krishna then consulting and the sons
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Of Pritha on a day of sacred light
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

All fate-appeasing ceremonies right
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

He ordered and with rice in sugared milk
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Sated the priests, silver and herds and silk.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

In energy of genius next he chose
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Ten thousand cubits, mapped a mighty close,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Region delightful where divinely sweet
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

The joy of all the seasons seemed to meet.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Four were the sides, ten thousand cubits all.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

This was the measure of the Pandav\u2019s hall.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

But in the Khandav plain abode
\nin ease<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Janardan mid the reverent ministries
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Of the great five: their loves his home renew.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

But for his father\u2019s sight a yearning grew
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And drew him thence. He of the monarch just
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And Pritha craved departure. In the dust
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

His head he lowered at her worshipped feet,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

He for the whole world\u2019s homage only meet.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Him she embraced and kissed his head. Next he
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

His sister dear encountered lovingly.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Wet were his eyes as with low words and few,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Pregnant and happy, admirably true
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

He greeted that divine fair girl and heard
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Of her sweet eloquence many a tender word
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

That to her kin should travel; reverent
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

She bowed her lovely head. And Krishna went<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

To Draupadie and Dhaum and took of these<\/font> <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Various farewell, \u2014 soft words her heart to ease,

(Thereafter with Arjoon the hero wise

His brothers met and in celestial guise,

Like Indra with the great immortals round,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

All rites that to safe journeying redound
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Performing, bath and pure ablution made
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And worship due with salutation paid,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Garlanded, praying, in rich gems arrayed,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

All incenses that breathe beneath the sun
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

To Gods and Brahmans offered. These things done
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Departure now was next. Stately he came
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Outward and all of venerable name
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Who bore the sacred office, had delight
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Of fruit and grain yet in the husk and white
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Approved curds, much wealth; and last the ground
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

He trod and traced the gyre of blessing round.)
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

So with a fortunate day and fortunate star
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And moment in his chariot built for war,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Golden, swift-rushing, with the Bird for sign

And banner, sword and discus, bow divine
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And mace round hung, and horses twin of stride,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Sugrive and Shaibya went the lotus-eyed.

Next in his love the monarch Yudhishthere
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Mounted, and Daruk, the great charioteer,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

He put aside. Himself he grasped the rein,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Himself he drove the chariot o\u2019er the plain.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And great Arjoona mounted, seized the white
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Wind-bringer with the golden staff and bright
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And called with his strong arm the circling wind;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

And Bheema and the princes twin behind
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Followed, and citizen and holy priest:<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

With the horizon the procession ceased.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

All these with the far-conquering Krishna wend,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

As a high sage whom his disciples tend,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

So for a league they journeyed; then no more<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

He suffered but Yudhishthere\u2019s will o\u2019erbore<\/font> <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

And forced return; then grappled to his breast<\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Arjoon beloved. Greeting well the rest<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Religiously the monarch\u2019s feet embraced<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Govinda, but the Pandav raised and kissed<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The head of Krishna beautiful-eyed. \u201cGo then,\u201d<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

He murmured, yet even so the word was vain<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Until reunion promised. Hardly at length<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

He stayed them with entreaty\u2019s utmost strength<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

From following him on foot; so glad has gone<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Like Indra thundering to the immortal\u2019s town.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

But they stood following with the eyes their light<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Until he vanished from the paths of sight.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Ev\u2019n then their hearts, though distance now conceals,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Run yet behind his far invisible wheels.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

But the swift chariot takes their joy and pride,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Too swift, alas! from eyes unsatisfied<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

With that dear vision, and reluctant, slow,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

In thoughts that still with Krishna\u2019s horse-hooves
\ngo,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Ceasing at last to their own town again<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Silent they wend, the lion lords of men.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

So entered the immortal Yudhishthere<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Girt round with friends his glorious city; here<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

He left them and in bowers for pleasure made<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/font><\/span>With Draupadie
\nthe godlike hero played.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

But Krishna, glad of soul, in whirling car<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Came speeding to his noble town afar<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

With Daruk and the hero Satyakie<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Swift as the great God\u2019s winged favourite he<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Entered, and all the Yadav lords renowned<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Came honouring him, with one the chief and crowned.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

And Krishna stayed his father old to greet<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

And Ahuk and his glorious mother\u2019s feet<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

And Balaam, his brother. His own sons<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

He next embraced and all their little ones.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Last of his elders leave he took and went<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/font><\/span>To Rukminie\u2019s
\nfair house in glad content,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

In Dwarca he;<\/i> but the great Titan Mat
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Still pondered and imagined cunningly<\/font> <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

A jewelled brightness in his thought begun,

An audience hall supreme for Hades\u2019son.

(So with the conqueror
\nunparalleled, <\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Arjoon, the Titan now this discourse held:<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo the great hill I go and soon return,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Whose northern peaks from Coilas upward burn.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

There when the Titans sacrifice of yore<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Intended by the water Bindusor,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Rich waste of fine material was left,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Wondrous, of stone a variegated weft<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

That for the mighty audience hall was stored<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Of Vrishaparvan,<\/u> the truth-speaking lord.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Thither I wend and make, if yet endure<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

All that divine material bright and pure,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The Pandav\u2019s hall, a glory to behold,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Admirable, set with jewelry and gold<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Taking the heart to pleasure. These besides<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

A cruel mace in Bindusor abides,)<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Massive endurance, studded aureate,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Ponderous, a death of foes, commensurate<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

With many thousand more in murderous will.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

There after slaughter huge of foes it still<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Lies by a king relinquished. This believe<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

For Bheem created as for thee Gandeve.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

There too the mighty conch Varunian lies:<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Thunders God-given swell its ocean voice.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Expect these from my hand infallibly.\u201d
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Thus saying went the Titan hastily
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

To the north-eastern edge of heaven where high
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Soars Mainac hill into the northward sky
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

From Coilas. Golden soar its ridges large
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And noble gems it stores and bright the marge
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Of Bindusor. The high conceiving Lord,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

King of all creatures and by worlds adored,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Here grandiose offerings gave and sacrifice
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

By hundreds, and with excellent device,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

For beauty not to old tradition, made
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Pillars of sacrifice with gems inlaid<\/font> <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

And monumental temples massed with gold.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Long here enduring Bhagiruth the bold

Through tedious seasons dwelt, yearning to see
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Ganges, his self-named river Bhagirathie.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Nor these alone, but he, the Argus-eyed
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Lord of imperial Sachi, to his side
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Victory by sacrifice compelled. Creating
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

World systems, energy irradiating
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

He sits here whom the awful ghosts attend,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Shiva, who no beginning has nor end.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Nar and Naraian there and Brahma there
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And Hades and the Immovable repair, \u2014
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Revolving when a thousand ages wend,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

To absolve with sacrifice the cycle\u2019s end.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Here now ambitious of religion gave<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Long years his mighty offerings Vasudev,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Devoutly, and bright temples raised their head,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Memorial columns golden-garlanded,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Unnumbered, multitudinous, immense.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Thither went Maia and recovered thence
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Conchshell and mace and for the audience hall
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

The old Titanic stone marmoreal. <\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

All mighty wealth the servile giants guard,<\/font>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/font> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Titan genius gathered and prepared
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

This famous hall unparalleled, divine,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Where all the jewels of the earth combine.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/font><\/span>To Bheem he
\ngave that mighty mace, the shell<\/font>\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

God-given called, whose cry unutterable<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

When from the great conch\u2019s ocean mouth \u2018tis hurled<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Far borne, trembling of creatures fills the world,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

To great Arjoona. But immense the hall<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Ten thousand cubits spread its bulk and all<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Its sides ten thousand, upon mighty boles<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Columnar elevate: nor either rolls \u2022<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The sun through heaven, moon nor vast fire so bright.<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Slaying the sunshine with superior light<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

It blazed as if aflame, most luminous, white,<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Celestial, large, raised like a cloud to soar<\/font> <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Against the heavens whose lustre it o\u2019erbore.

Of fair material was it made, the walls
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And arches jewelled were of those rich halls.

Such wonder of creative genius won
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

The World\u2019s Designer to companion,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

For neither Brahma\u2019s roof nor Vishnu\u2019s high
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Might equal this for glorious symmetry.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Nor yet Sudharma, Indra\u2019s council hall,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>, <\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

With Maia\u2019s cunning strove. At Maia\u2019s call
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Eight thousand Helots of the Giants\u2019 blood
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Upbore the pile and dreadful sentries stood,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Travellers on wind, huge-bodied, horrible,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Shell-eared, far-strikers, with bloodshot eyes and
\nfell. <\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And in the middle a lotus-lake he made
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Unparalleled, white lotuses displayed,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And birds innumerable and all the stems
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Of that fair blossom were of beauteous gems
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And all the leaves were sapphires: through them
\nrolled <\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Gold tortoises and wondrous fish of gold.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Marble mosaic was the stair: the wave
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Translucent ran its edges fine to lave,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Wrinkled with soft cool winds that over it sped.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

A rain of pearl drops on the floor was shed,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And seats from slabs of precious stone combined
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

The marble banks of that fair water lined.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And all around it ever-flowering trees
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Of various race hung dark and huge with ease
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Of cool delightful shade, sweet-smelling woods
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And quiet waters where the white swan broods
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And ducks and waders of the ripples. Sweet
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

The wind came from them, fragrance in its feet
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

The lotus gave and lily of the land,
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And with its booty the great brothers fanned.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Full fourteen months he laboured: the fifteenth
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Saw ready jewelled arch and luminous plinth.
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Then only came the Titan, and declared<\/font> <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Then held. Thousands of Brahmins luscious cheer
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Of rice with sugared milk enjoyed wherein
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Honey was mingled; flesh besides they win
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

Of boar and stag and all roots eatable
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n

And fruits and sesamum-rice that tastes full well
\n<\/font> <\/span><\/p>\n
