You remember this Swami<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;Ramalingam who had that vision of the &quot;Grace-Light&quot;? You<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;made a few remarks, part of which I passed on to the person who<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;had asked the question&#8230;. And I&#8217;ve raised a storm.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P>Oh, why?<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>Not with this good man [Ramalingam&#8217;s Tamil disciple], not at<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;all, but with A. [[An old disciple, author of several books about Sri Aurobindo and editor of one of the Ashram&#8217;s magazines. ]] <\/i>\n  <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P>A.?<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>Yes, A. must have seen the answer, and through me he sends you<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;a<br \/>\n  letter.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P>Saying?<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>You know &#8230;it somewhat gives me a feeling of a mental falsehood.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><P>What&#8217;s wrong? Does it bother him?<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>Yes, he&#8217;s quite indignant.<\/i><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n  <font size=\"2\">Page 268<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><P>At what?! What made this gentleman indignant?<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>First I&#8217;ll read you what I wrote to T. [Ramalingam&#8217;s Tamil<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;disciple]: [[Satprem&#8217;s letter to T. and the following letter from A. are retranslated here from the French translation. ]] <\/i>\n  <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<p><i>&quot;The translation of Swami Ramalingam&#8217;s experiences was<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;read out to Mother, and she does not doubt their authentic<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>ity; she particularly liked the manner in which the Swami<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;called that light &#8216;Grace-Light,&#8217; and she said it corresponds<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;to her own experience. She remarked that over the ages, and<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;even now, it is quite likely that a number of individuals,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;known or unknown, have had similar experiences. The only<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;difference is that at present, instead of an individual possi<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>bility, there is a collective possibility &#8211; that is precisely Sri<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;Aurobindo&#8217;s and Mothers work: to establish, as a terrestrial<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;fact and a possibility for everyone, the supramental con<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>sciousness or &#8216;Grace-Light&#8217; as Swami Ramalingam called it.&quot;<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P align=\"right\"><i>Satprem<\/i><br \/>\n<P>Ah, what made him indignant is the mixing of the two, &quot;Grace-Light&quot; and &quot;supramental light&quot;&#8230;. I didn&#8217;t say it was the same thing. Anyway, it doesn&#8217;t matter&#8230;. It would have been better not to put &quot;supramental consciousness,&quot; because they don&#8217;t understand&#8230;. It doesn&#8217;t matter.<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>But from what you said, I understood that this &quot;Grace-Light&quot;<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;was the supramental light.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P>It&#8217;s ONE of the actions of the supramental light. But it doesn&#8217;t matter.<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>So A. says this:<\/i><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><font size=\"2\">Page 269<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<p><i>&quot;Dearest Mother, regarding certain translations of poems of<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;Swami Ramalingam by his disciple T., you answered him<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;through Satprem in such a way that he was led to equate<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;Ramalingam&#8217;s &#8216;Grace-Light&#8217; and the supramental Con<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>sciousness. &#8230;<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P>Yes, I wouldn&#8217;t have done that&#8230;. So he&#8217;s furious!<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>But you see, to my mind, when I asked you if over the ages there<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;had been experiences of this sort, I had in mind experiences of<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;individuals who had individually made contact with the supra-<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>mental light or the supramental level&#8230;.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P>One of the forms of the supramental manifestation&#8230;. It doesn&#8217;t matter. Read on.<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>&quot;Did you really mean that Ramalingam was in DIRECT<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;contact with the Supramental?&#8230;<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P>Why not!&#8230;<br \/>\n<P>Read on, then.<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>&quot;&#8230; and that he was in contact with it as you and Sri Auro<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>bindo were?&#8230;<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P>No, I didn&#8217;t say that!<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>You didn&#8217;t! How stupid!<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>Yes, Mother. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><P>Is that all?<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>No.<\/i><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><font size=\"2\">Page 270<\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<p><i>&quot;Through your answer, T. [Ramalingam&#8217;s disciple] understood<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;that the only difference between Ramalingam&#8217;s supramental<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;yoga and yours or Sri Aurobindo&#8217;s is that his was concerned<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;with an individual supramentalization, whereas you and Sri <\/i>\n  <\/p>\n<p><i>Aurobindo also worked for a collective supramentalization.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<p><i>&quot;T. is convinced of this and also declares that Ramalingam<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;had attained the complete supramentalization of the body&#8230;.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P>We didn&#8217;t say that!<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>&quot;&#8230; In his opinion, what you said confirms it.  <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&quot;I tend to regard his whole stand as rather fantastic; it shows<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;me that T. has failed to understand Sri Aurobindo&#8217;s vision,  <\/i>\n  <\/p>\n<p><i>work and yoga at their true value. I believe that not only the<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;collective supramentalization , but the individual supramen<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>talization have never been attempted previously, not to<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;speak of realization. Even the full knowledge of the Supra<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>mental through an ascent into the Supramental and a<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;sovereign entry into the Supramental has not been done.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;How then can one speak of a practical realisation of the full<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;dynamics of the supramental descent?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;&quot;At least that is what I understood from a study of Sri<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;Aurobindo&#8217;s and your writings. Am I wrong? A clear indi<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>cation from you would be very helpful to make us see things<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&nbsp;in the true light.&quot;<\/i><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><P align=\"right\"><i>(after a long concentration,<br \/>Mother takes a notepad, <\/i><br \/>\n<P align=\"right\"><i>then plunges back for a long time)<\/i><br \/>\n<P>There&#8217;s a refusal to answer.<br \/>\n<P align=\"right\"><i>(long silence)<\/i><br \/>\n<P>Was this man alive recently?<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p><i>No, around 1850.
