Ashwalayana to the Lord<br \/>\nParameshthi came and said, &quot;Teach me, Lord, the highest knowledge of Brahman,<br \/>\nthe secret knowledge ever followed by the saints, how the wise man swiftly<br \/>\nputting from him all evil goeth to the Purusha who is higher than the highest.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"margin:0;text-align: center;line-height: 150%\">\n<span style=\"font-size:10.0pt;line-height:125%\">Page \u2013 415<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\">\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;line-height:150%\" align=\"center\"><b><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt;line-height: 125%\"><br \/>\nCommentary<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><b><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 13.5pt;line-height: 125%\">T<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">HE<br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\">Lord Parameshthi is Brahma \u2014 not the creator<br \/>\nHiranyagarbha, but the soul who in this Kalpa has climbed up to be the<br \/>\ninstrument of creation, the first in time of the Gods, the Pitamaha or original<br \/>\nand general Prajapati; the Pitamaha, because all the fathers or special<br \/>\nPrajapatis, Daksha and others, are his mind-born children. The confusion between<br \/>\nthe grandsire and the Creator, who is also called Brahma, is common; but the<br \/>\ndistinction is clear. Thus in the Mundaka Upanishad, <i>brahm&#257; dev&#257;n&#257;m prathamah<\/i><\/span><i><span lang=\"VI\">&#803;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/>\nsambabh&#363;va,<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> it is the first of Gods, the earliest<br \/>\nbirth of Time, the father of Atharva, and not the unborn eternal Hiranyagarbha.<br \/>\nIn the Puranas Brahma is described as in fear of his life from Madhu and<br \/>\nKaitabha, and cannot be the fearless and immortal Hiranyagarbha. Nor would it be<br \/>\npossible for Ashwalayana to come to Hiranyagarbha and say, &quot;Teach me. Lord&quot;, for<br \/>\nHiranyagarbha has no form, nor is He approachable nor does He manifest Himself<br \/>\nto man as Shiva and Vishnu do. He is millionfold. Protean, intangible, and for<br \/>\nthat reason He places in each cycle a Brahma or divine Man between Him and the<br \/>\nsearch and worship of men. It is Brahma or divine Man who is called Parameshthi,<br \/>\n\u2014 or the one full of Parameshtham that which is superlative and highest, \u2014<br \/>\nHiranyagarbha. The power of Hiranyagarbha is in Brahma and created through him<br \/>\nthe <i>n&#257;ma<\/i> and <i>r&#363;pa<\/i> of things in this cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">To Brahma<br \/>\nParameshthi Ashwalayana comes as a disciple to Master and says to him, &quot;Lord,<br \/>\nteach me the Brahmavidya.&quot; He specifies the kind of knowledge he requires. It is<br \/>\n<i>varis<\/i><\/span><i><span lang=\"VI\">&#803;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">t<\/span><span lang=\"VI\">&#803;<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ha,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\">the best or highest, because it goes beyond the<br \/>\ntriple Brahman to the Purushottama or Most High God; it is secret, because even<br \/>\nin the ordinary teaching of Vedanta, Purana and Tantra it is not expressed, it<br \/>\nis always followed by the saints, the initiate. The <i>santah<\/i><\/span><i><span lang=\"VI\">&#803;<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/>\nor saints are those who are pure of desire and full of knowledge and it is to<br \/>\nthese that the secret knowledge has been given <i>sad&#257;,<\/i> from the beginning.<br \/>\nHe makes his meaning yet clearer<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"margin:0;text-align: center;line-height: 150%\">\n<span style=\"font-size:10.0pt;line-height:125%\">Page \u2013 416<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\">\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">by stating the<br \/>\nsubstance of the knowledge\u2014<i>yath&#257;,<\/i> how, by what means won by knowledge, <i><br \/>\nvidv&#257;n,<\/i> one can swiftly put sin from him and reach Purushottama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">There are three<br \/>\nnecessary elements of the path to Kaivalya, \u2014 first, the starting-point, <i><br \/>\nvidy&#257;,<\/i> right knowledge, implying the escape from ignorance, from<br \/>\nnon-knowledge and false knowledge; next the process or means, escape from <i><br \/>\nsarvap&#257;pam,<\/i> all evil, i.e. sin, pain and grief; last, the goal, Purushottama,<br \/>\nthe being who is beyond the highest, that is, beyond <i>tur&#299;ya,<\/i> Turiya being<br \/>\nthe Highest. By the escape from sin, pain and grief one attains absolute <i><br \/>\n&#257;nanda,<\/i> the last term of existence, we reach that in which Ananda exists.<br \/>\nWhat is that? It is not Turiya who is <i>&#347;ivam, &#347;&#257;ntam, advaitam, saccid&#257;nandam,<\/i><br \/>\nbut that which is beyond <i>&#347;ivam<\/i> and <i>a&#347;ivam,<\/i> good and evil, <i><br \/>\n&#347;antam<\/i> and <i>kalilam,<\/i> calm and chaos, <i>dvaitam<\/i> and <i>advaitam,<\/i><br \/>\nduality and unity. Sat, Chit and Ananda are in their Highest, but He is neither<br \/>\nSat, Chit nor Ananda nor any combination of these. He is all and yet He is <i><br \/>\nneti, neti.<\/i> He is One and yet He is many. He is Parabrahman and He is<br \/>\nParameshwara. He is Male and He is Female. He is <i>tat<\/i> and He is <i>sa.<\/i><br \/>\nThis is the Higher than the Highest. He is the Purusha, the Being in whose image<br \/>\nthe world and all the Jivas are made, who pervades all and underlies all the<br \/>\nworkings of Prakriti as its reality and self.
