By whom missioned falls the mind shot to its mark? By whom yoked moves the<br \/>\nfirst life-breath forward on its paths? By whom impelled is this word that men<br \/>\nspeak? That which is hearing of our hearing, mind of our mind, speech of our speech,<br \/>\nthat too is life of our life-breath and sight of our sight. There sight travels not, nor speech, nor the mind. We know It not nor can<br \/>\ndistinguish how one should teach of It:&nbsp; for It is other than the known; It is<br \/>\nthere above the unknown. If thou thinkest that thou knowest It well, little indeed dost thou know the<br \/>\nform of the Brahman. That of It which is thou, that of It which is in the gods,<br \/>\nthis thou hast to think out. I think not that I know It well and yet I know that It is not unknown to me.<br \/>\nHe of us who knows It, knows That; he knows that It is not unknown to him. <\/p>\n<p><p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/kena-pt-2-3.jpg\" width=\"233\" height=\"42\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n3. He by whom It is not thought out, has the thought of It; he by whom It is<br \/>\nthought out, knows It not. When It is known by perception that reflects It, then one has the thought of<br \/>\nIt, for one finds immortality; by the self one finds the force to attain and by<br \/>\nthe knowledge one finds immortality. <\/p>\n<p><p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/kena-pt-2-5.jpg\" width=\"348\" height=\"42\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n5. If here one comes to that knowledge, then one truly is; if here one comes not<br \/>\nto the knowledge, then great is the perdition. &nbsp;\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%;margin-bottom:0\">\n<span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\">Page \u2013 147<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center;text-indent:.5in;line-height:12.0pt\">\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">The<br \/>\nwise distinguish That in all kinds of becomings and they pass forward from this<br \/>\nworld and become immortal. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%\">\n<b>T<span style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">HIRD <\/span>P<span style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">ART<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/kena-pt-3-1.jpg\" width=\"352\" height=\"42\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n1. The Eternal conquered for the gods and in the victory of the Eternal the gods<br \/>\ngrew to greatness. This was what they saw: &quot;Ours the victory, ours the<br \/>\ngreatness.&quot; <\/p>\n<p><p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/kena-pt-3-2.jpg\" width=\"356\" height=\"42\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n2. The Eternal knew their thought and appeared before them; and they knew not<br \/>\nwhat was this mighty Daemon. <\/p>\n<p><p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/kena-pt-3-3.jpg\" width=\"329\" height=\"23\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n3. The Eternal set before him a blade of grass: &quot;This burn,&quot; and he made towards<br \/>\nit with all his speed, but he could not burn it. He in the same ether came upon the Woman, even upon Her who shines out in<br \/>\nmany forms, Uma daughter of the snowy summits. Therefore is Indra as it were beyond all the other gods because he came<br \/>\nnearest to the touch of That, because <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n<span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\">\u00b9By some mistake of early memorisers or later<br \/>\ncopyists the rest of the verse has become hopelessly corrupted. It runs, &quot;They<br \/>\nhe first came to know that it was the Brahman&quot;, which is neither fact nor sense<br \/>\nnor grammar.
