\nTHE KENA UPANISHAD

FIRST
\n<\/span>PART <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n1. By whom missioned falls the mind shot to its mark? By whom yoked moves the
\nfirst life-breath forward on its paths? By whom impelled is this word that men
\nspeak? What god set eye and ear to their workings? <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n2. That which is hearing of our hearing, mind of our mind, speech of our speech,
\nthat too is life of our life-breath and sight of our sight. The wise are
\nreleased beyond and they pass from this world and become immortal. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n3. There sight travels not, nor speech, nor the mind. We know It not nor can
\ndistinguish how one should teach of It:  for It is other than the known; It is
\nthere above the unknown. It is so we have heard from men of old who declared
\nThat to our understanding. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n4. That which is unexpressed by the word, that by which the  \n\t\t<\/p>\n

word is expressed,
\nknow That to be the Brahman and this which men follow after here. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n5. That which thinks not by the mind,\u00b9  that by which the mind is thought, know
\nThat to be the Brahman and not this which men follow after here. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n6. That which sees not with the eye,\u00b2  that by which one sees the eye’s
\nseeings, know That to be the Brahman and not this which men follow after here.\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n7. That which hears not with the ear,3 that by which the ear’s hearing is heard,
\nknow That to be the Brahman and not this which men follow after here. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n8. That which breathes not with the breath,4 that by which the life-breath is
\nled forward in its paths, know That to be the Brahman and not this which men
\nfollow after here. <\/p>\n

\nthat which one thinks not with the mind, <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b2Or,
\nthat which one sees not with the eye, <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n1. If thou thinkest that thou knowest It well, little indeed dost thou know the
\nform of the Brahman. That of It which is thou, that of It which is in the gods,
\nthis thou hast to think out. I think It known. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n2. I think not that I know It well and yet I know that It is not unknown to me.
\nHe of us who knows It, knows That; he knows that It is not unknown to him. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n3. He by whom It is not thought out, has the thought of It; he by whom It is
\nthought out, knows It not. It is unknown to the discernment of those who discern
\nof It, by those who seek not to discern of It, It is discerned. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n4. When It is known by perception that reflects It, then one has the thought of
\nIt, for one finds immortality; by the self one finds the force to attain and by
\nthe knowledge one finds immortality. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n5. If here one comes to that knowledge, then one truly is; if here one comes not
\nto the knowledge, then great is the perdition.  \n\t\t<\/p>\n

The
\nwise distinguish That in all kinds of becomings and they pass forward from this
\nworld and become immortal. <\/p>\n

\nTHIRD <\/span>PART<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n1. The Eternal conquered for the gods and in the victory of the Eternal the gods
\ngrew to greatness. This was what they saw: "Ours the victory, ours the
\ngreatness." <\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n2. The Eternal knew their thought and appeared before them; and they knew not
\nwhat was this mighty Daemon. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n3. They said to Agni, "0 thou that knowest all things born, learn of this thing,
\nwhat may be this mighty Daemon," and he said, "So be it." <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n4. He rushed toward the Eternal and It said to him, "Who art thou?" "I am Agni,"
\nhe said, "I am he that knows all things born." <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n5.<\/i> "Since such thou art, what is the force in thee?" "Even all this I
\ncould burn, all that is upon the earth."  \n\t\t<\/p>\n

\n6. The Eternal set before him a blade of grass: "This burn," and he made towards
\nit with all his speed, but he could not burn it. There he ceased, and turned
\nback; "I could not know of It, what might be this mighty Daemon." <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n7. Then they said to Vayu, "0 Vayu, this discern, what is this mighty Daemon."
\nHe said, "So be it." <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n8. He rushed upon That; It said to him, "Who art thou?" "I am Vayu," he said,
\n"and I am he that expands in the Mother of things." <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n9. "Since such thou art, what is the force in thee?" "Even all this I can take
\nfor myself all this that is upon the earth." <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n10.That set before him a blade of grass, "This take." <\/b>He went towards it
\nwith all his speed and he could not take it. Even there he ceased, even thence
\nhe returned: "I could not discern of That, what is this mighty Daemon." <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n11. Then they said to Indra, "Master of plenitudes, get thou the knowledge, what
\nis this mighty Daemon." He said, "So be <\/p>\n

\nit." <\/b>He rushed upon That. That vanished from before <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n12. He in the same ether came upon the Woman, even upon Her who shines out in
\nmany forms, Uma daughter of the snowy summits. To her he said, "What was this
\nmighty <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

FOURTH
\n<\/span>PART<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n1. She said to him, "It is the Eternal. <\/b>Of the Eternal is this victory in
\nwhich ye shall grow to greatness." Then alone he came to know that this was the
\nBrahman. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n2. Therefore are these gods as it were beyond all the other gods, even Agni and
\nVayu and Indra, because they came nearest to the touch of That….\u00b9 <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n3. Therefore is Indra as it were beyond all the other gods because he came
\nnearest to the touch of That, because <\/p>\n

 \n<\/p>\n

\n\u00b9By some mistake of early memorisers or later
\ncopyists the rest of the verse has become hopelessly corrupted. It runs, "They
\nhe first came to know that it was the Brahman", which is neither fact nor sense
\nnor grammar. The close of the third verse has crept into and replaced the
\noriginal close of the second. <\/span><\/p>\n

\nhe first knew that it was the Brahman. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n4. Now this is the indication of That, \u2014 as is this flash of the lightning upon
\nus or as is this falling of the eyelid, so in that which is of the gods. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n5. Then in that which is of the Self, \u2014 as the motion of this mind seems to
\nattain to That and by it afterwards the will in the thought continually
\nremembers <\/b>It. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n6. The name of That is ‘That Delight"; as That Delight one should follow after
\nIt. He who so knows That, towards him verily all existences yearn. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n7. Thou hast said "Speak to me Upanishad";\u00b9 spoken to thee is Upanishad. <\/b>
\nOf the Eternal verily is the Upanishad that we have spoken. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n8. Of this knowledge austerity and self-conquest and works are the foundation,
\nthe Vedas are all its limbs, truth is its dwelling place. <\/p>\n

 \n<\/p>\n

\n\u00b9Upanishad means inner
\nknowledge, that which enters into the final Truth and settles in it. <\/span> \n<\/p>\n

\n9. He who knows this knowledge, smites evil away from him and in that vaster
\nworld and infinite heaven finds his foundation, yea, he finds his foundation.\n<\/p>\n
