By Vedanta is<br \/>\nmeant the Upanishads as authoritative basis of the philosophy and as useful<br \/>\nsupplementary inquiries the Aphoristic Books that treat of the Embodied Soul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"right\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/sadananda-4.jpg\" width=\"390\" height=\"23\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;line-height:150%\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 125%\">4. Now since<br \/>\nVedanta is the subject of this work, its circum<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">stantia<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 125%\"><br \/>\nPage \u2013 440<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\">\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u2014the conclusions sought to be<br \/>\nestablished being similar in both \u2014 are the same as those of the Vedanta and<br \/>\nneed not be separately discussed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/sadananda-5.jpg\" width=\"317\" height=\"23\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">5. In circumstantia we include four<br \/>\nthings, the fit hearer, the subject, the logic of relation, the object of the<br \/>\nwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/sadananda-6.jpg\" width=\"386\" height=\"84\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">6. Now the fit<br \/>\nhearer of Vedanta must be one who is competent to form a right judgment of it.<br \/>\nHe must therefore have mastered by proper study of Veda and its accessory<br \/>\nsciences the entire meaning of Veda, he must in this life or another have begun<br \/>\nby abandoning forbidden actions and actions prompted by desire and then by the<br \/>\nperformance of daily observances, occasional observances, penance and adoration<br \/>\nfreed himself from all sin and stain and attained to perfect purity of the mind<br \/>\nand heart; and he must be in possession of the four Ways and Means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/sadananda-7.jpg\" width=\"279\" height=\"23\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">7. By regular<br \/>\nobservances is meant ceremonies like the evening prayer etc., the<br \/>\nnon-performance of which turns them into means of offence and stumbling-blocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/sadananda-10.jpg\" width=\"333\" height=\"22\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">10.<b>&nbsp; <\/b>By<br \/>\noccasional observances is understood ceremonies circumstantial to particular<br \/>\noccasions, such as the Blessing of the New-born attendant on the birth of a son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/sadananda-11.jpg\" width=\"306\" height=\"23\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">11. By penances<br \/>\nis understood vows and forms of self-discipline such as the Chandrayan vow which<br \/>\nare means <i>only<\/i> towards the purging away of sin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/sadananda-12.jpg\" width=\"402\" height=\"23\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">12.<b> <\/b>By<br \/>\nadoration is understood the various forms of mental working which have for their<br \/>\nwhole subject and purpose the Eternal in His aspect as a Personal Deity \u2014<br \/>\nShandilya&#8217;s Art of Divine Love, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/sadananda-13.jpg\" width=\"402\" height=\"65\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">13. The main<br \/>\nobject of the first three, observances regular and occasional and penances, is<br \/>\nthe purification of the Under\u00adstanding; but the main object of adoration is<br \/>\nsingleness of heart and mind towards one object. This is proved by such passages<br \/>\nas these from the Revealed Scripture, &quot;This is that Self of whom the Brahmins<br \/>\nshall seek to know by exposition of Veda and by Sacrifice shall they seek to<br \/>\nknow Him&quot; \u2014 and by other passages from the Unrevealed Scripture such as &quot;By<br \/>\nTapasya (energism of will) one slayeth sin.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 125%\"><br \/>\nPage \u2013 442<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\">\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/sadananda-14.jpg\" width=\"402\" height=\"45\"><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">14. A secondary<br \/>\nresult of observances regular and occasional and of adoration and worship is<br \/>\nattainment to the world of the fathers and to the world of the Living Truth.
