Worship ye OM, the eternal syllable, OM is Udgitha,<br \/>\n\tthe chant of Sama-veda; for with OM they begin the chant of Sama. And this<br \/>\n\tis the exposition of <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">OM.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n      <span lang=\"EN-US\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-1-2.jpg\" width=\"337\" height=\"61\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\">2. Earth is the substantial essence of all these<br \/>\n\tcreatures and the waters are the essence of earth; herbs of the field are<br \/>\n\tthe essence of the waters, man is the essence of the herbs. Speech is the<br \/>\n\tessence of man, Rig-veda the essence of Speech, Sama the essence of Rik. Of<br \/>\n\tSama OM is the essence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n      <span lang=\"EN-US\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-1-3.jpg\" width=\"337\" height=\"23\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\">3.&nbsp; This is the eighth essence of the essences and the<br \/>\n\treally essential, the highest and it belongs to the upper hemisphere of<br \/>\n\tthings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n      <span lang=\"EN-US\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-1-4.jpg\" width=\"337\" height=\"42\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\">4. These are the divine lovers.<br \/>\n\tSpeech and Breath, Rik and Sama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n      <span lang=\"EN-US\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-1-6.jpg\" width=\"344\" height=\"42\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\">6.&nbsp; As a pair of lovers are these and they cling together<br \/>\n\tin OM the eternal syllable; but now when the beloved and her lover meet,<br \/>\n\tverily, they gratify each the desire of the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;line-height:150%\" align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/>\n      <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-1-7.jpg\" width=\"344\" height=\"42\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;line-height:150%\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">7. He becomes a<br \/>\n\tgratifier of the desires of men who with this knowledge worships OM the<br \/>\n\teternal syllable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n      <span lang=\"EN-US\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-1-8.jpg\" width=\"344\" height=\"65\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\">8.&nbsp; Now this OM is the syllable of Assent; for to<br \/>\n\twhatsoever one assents, one says OM; and assent is blessing of increase.<br \/>\n\tVerily he becomes a blesser and increaser of the desires of men who with<br \/>\n\tthis knowledge worships OM the eternal syllable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n      <span lang=\"EN-US\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-1-9.jpg\" width=\"344\" height=\"42\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\">9.&nbsp; By OM the triple knowledge proceeds; with OM the<br \/>\n\tpriest recites the Rik, with OM he pronounces the Yajur, with OM he chants<br \/>\n\tthe Sama. He does works by OM who has the knowledge, and he<br \/>\n\talso who has it not; but these are diverse, the Knowledge and the Ignorance.<br \/>\n\tWhatsoever work one does with knowledge, with faith and with the secret of<br \/>\n\tVeda, it becomes to him more virile and mighty. The Gods and the Demons strove together and both were<br \/>\n\tchildren of the Almighty Father. Then the Gods took up for weapon OM of<br \/>\n\tUdgitha, for they said, &quot;With this we shall overcome these Titans.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n      <span lang=\"EN-US\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-2-2.jpg\" width=\"348\" height=\"65\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\">2. The Gods worshipped OM as Breath in the nostrils; but<br \/>\n\tthe Demons came and smote it with the arrow of Evil; therefore it smells<br \/>\n\tboth alike, the sweet scent and the evil odour. For it is smitten through<br \/>\n\tand through with Evil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n      <span lang=\"EN-US\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-2-3.jpg\" width=\"348\" height=\"42\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;line-height: 125%\">3. Then the<br \/>\n\tGods worshipped OM as Speech; but the Demons came and smote it with the<br \/>\n\tarrow of Evil; therefore it speaks both alike, Truth and Falsehood. Then the Gods worshipped OM as the Eye; but the Demons<br \/>\n\tcame and smote it with the arrow of Evil; therefore it beholds both alike,<br \/>\n\tthe fair to see and the foul of favour. Then the Gods worshipped OM as the Ear; but the Demons<br \/>\n\tcame and smote it with the arrow of Evil; therefore it hears both alike,<br \/>\n\tthat which is well to hear and that which is harsh and unseemly. Then the Gods worshipped Udgitha as Mind but the<br \/>\n\tDemons came and smote it with the arrow of Evil; therefore it conceives both<br \/>\n\talike, right thoughts and unlawful imaginations. Then the Gods worshipped OM as this which is Breath in<br \/>\n\tthe mouth and the Demons rushing against it dashed themselves to pieces; as<br \/>\n\twhen an object strikes against firm and solid rock, it dashes to pieces upon<br \/>\n\tthe rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n      <span lang=\"EN-US\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-2-8.jpg\" width=\"348\" height=\"45\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:center;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 125%\"><br \/>\n\tPage &#8211; 388<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\">\n\t\t<i><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 11.0pt\"><\/p>\n<hr size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" align=\"center\"><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\">8. And even as an object hurling against firm and solid<br \/>\n\trock dashes itself to pieces, so he hurls himself upon destruction whoso<br \/>\n\tdesires evil against the Knower or whoso does him hurt; for the Knower is as<br \/>\n\tthat firm and solid rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n      <span lang=\"EN-US\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-2-9.jpg\" width=\"352\" height=\"61\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\">9. With this Breath one cognises neither sweet scent nor<br \/>\n\till odour, for it has flung Evil from it. Whatsoever one eats with this or<br \/>\n\tdrinks, thereby it cherishes the other breaths. At the end and last when he<br \/>\n\tfinds not the breath, the Spirit goes out from the body; verily he opens<br \/>\n\twide the mouth as he goes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n      <span lang=\"EN-US\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"\/elibrarytest\/-01 Works of Sri Aurobindo\/-01_SABCL\/-12_The Upanishad_Volume-12\/_images\/chhandogya-ch-1-sec-2-10.jpg\" width=\"352\" height=\"42\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin:0;text-align:justify;line-height:150%\">\n\t<span lang=\"EN-US\">10.
