\nWakeful at midnight! He has never had
\nSince his strange birth a mother’s, sister’s love.
\nO sleeping soul of my beloved, hear
\nMy vow that while thy Vasavadutta lives,
\nThou shalt not lack again one heart’s desire,
\nOne tender bodily want. All things at once,
\nWife, mother, sister, lover, playmate, friend,
\nQueen, comrade, counsellor I will be to thee.
\nSelf shall not chill my heart with wedded strife,
\nNor age nor custom pale my fire of love.
\nI have that strength in me, the strength to love of gods.<\/font>

\nLike a poor Brahmin begging for a dole ?

\nWith the free interchange of looks and hearts
\nNobly self-given, heaven for the priest
\nAnd the heart’s answers for the holy verse,
\nThey are wedded or by wished-for violence torn
\nConsenting, yet resisting from the midst
\nOf many armed men. So will I wed thee,
\nO Vasavadutta, so wilt bear by force
\nOut of the house and city of my foes<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n
