\nThe boy who rivalled thy ripe victor years
\nI lay, thy captive, at thy feet.<\/p>\n

MAHASEGN

\nGopalaca,
\nThou hast done well; thou art indeed my son.
\nVuthsa, \u2014<\/p>\n

VUTHSA
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nHail, monarch of the West. We have met
\nIn equal battle; it has pleased me now to approach
\nThy greatness otherwise.<\/p>\n

MAHASEGN
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nPleased thee, vain youth!
\nNo, but thy fate indignant that thou strovest
\nAgainst much prouder fortunes.<\/p>\n

VUTHSA
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThink it so.
\nI am here. What wouldst thou with me, King, or wherefore
\nHast thou by violence brought me to thy house ?<\/p>\n

MAHASEGN
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nTo adore me as sole master, king and lord,
\nAssuming my great yoke as all have done
\nFrom Indus to the South.<\/p>\n

VUTHSA

\nThou art in error.<\/p>\n

\nThou hast not great Cowsambie’s monarch here,.
\nBut Vuthsa only, Sathaneka’s son,
\nWho sprang from sires divine.<\/p>\n

MAHASEGN

\nAnd where then dwells
\nCowsambie’s youthful majesty if not
\nIn thee, its golden vessel ?<\/p>\n

VUTHSA
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhere my throne
\nIn high Cowsambie stands. Thou shouldst know that.
\nThere is a kingship which exceeds the king;<\/p>\n

\nFor Vuthsa unworthy, Vuthsa captive, slain,
\nThis is not captive, this cannot be slain.
\nIt far transcends our petty human forms,
\nIt is a nation’s greatness. That, O king,
\nWas once Parikshit, that Urjoona’s seed,
\nJanamejoya, that was Sathaneka,
\nThat Vuthsa; and when Vuthsa is no more,
\nThat shall live deathless in a hundred kings.<\/p>\n

MAHASEGN
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nThou speakest like the unripe boy thou seemst,<\/p>\n

\nWith thoughts high-winging; grown minds keep to earth’s<\/p>\n

\nMore humble sureness and prefer to touch.<\/p>\n

\nI am content to have thy gracious body here,<\/p>\n

\nThis earth of kingship; for with that I deal<\/p>\n

\nAnd not with any high and formless\u00b9<\/font> thought.<\/p>\n

VUTHSA
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nMy body! deal with it. It is thy slave
\nAnd captive by thy choice, as by my own.
\nWhat thou canst do with Vuthsa, do, O king.
\nIn nothing will I pledge Cowsambie’s majesty,
\nBut Vuthsa is thy own and in thy hands.<\/p>\n

\nI embrace it. If escape
\nI simply meant, I should not now be here.
\n‘Tis not by bars or gates I can be bound.<\/p>\n

MAHASEGN

\nBut I will give thee other jailors, boy,
\nSurer than my armed sentries, against whom
\nThou dar’st not lift thy helpless hands.<\/p>\n

VUTHSA<\/font>
I am content.\n<\/p>\n

\nFind such,<\/p>\n

MAHASEGN
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nHumble thy bearing proud!
\nBe Vuthsa or be great Cowsambie’s king,
\nThou art here my captive only and my slave.<\/p>\n

VUTHSA
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nI accept thy stern rebuke as I accept<\/p>\n

\nWhatever state the wiser gods provide<\/p>\n

\nAnd bend my mood and action to their thought.<\/p>\n

MAHASEGN
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nVuthsa, thou hast opposed my sovereign will
\nWho meant to make all lands my private plot,
\nFields for my royal tilling. Thou hast fought
\nAnd that by war I could not tame thee, hold
\nAs thy most unexampled glory. Now<\/p>\n

\nMy proud resistless fortune brings thee here;<\/p>\n

\nThou must, young hero, brook enslaved my will.
\nThou knowst the law; whoever offers empire
\nA sacrifice to the high-seated gods,
\nHim must his subject kings as menials serve;<\/p>\n

\nAnd this compelled -.have many proud lords done
\nWhose high beginnings disappear in Time.
\nBut now I will make all my royal days
\nA high continual solemn sacrifice of kingship.
\nThee, who art Bharuth’s heir, a high-throned son
\nOf emperors and my equal in the world,
\nAll thy long time I will superbly keep
\nOrnament and emblem of my arrogant greatness,
\nA royal serf of my proud house. Thee, Vuthsa,
\nAs fitting thy yet tender years, I make
\nMy daughter’s servant, by her handmaidens
\nGuarded, thy jailors firm whose gracious cordon
\nNot even thy courage can transgress. To this
\nDost thou consent?<\/p>\n

VUTHSA
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nNot only I consent,
\nBut welcome with a proud aspiring mind,
\nSince to be Vasavadutta’s servitor
\nIs honour, happiness and fortune’s grace.
\nMy greatness this shall raise, not cast it down,
\nKing Mahasegn.<\/p>\n

MAHASEGN
\n\t<\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\nLead then, Gopalaca,
\nMy gift, this captive, to thy sister’s feet.
\nHe has a music that desires the gods,
\nA brush that outdoes Nature and a song
\nThe luminous choristers of heaven have taught.
\nAll this she can command or she can take;<\/p>\n

\nFor all he has, is hers. Thou smilest, boy?<\/p>\n

\ninward to Vasavadutta’s apartments. <\/i><\/p>\n

\nTis only a charming boy, Ungarica,
\nWho vaunts and yields!<\/p>\n

UNGARICA<\/font><\/p>\n

\nWhat he has shown thee. King,
Thou seest.<\/p>\n

MAHASEGN

\nWilt thou lend next this graceful child,
\nAlmost a girl in beauty, thoughts profound
\nAnd practised subtleties ? I have done well,
\nWas deeply inspired.<\/p>\n
