\n<\/span><\/span>I<\/font>N <\/span><\/b>THAT
\n<\/span>inexhaustible treasure-house of
\nwisdom, the Mahabharata, sayings of profoundest wisdom are scattered with a
\nlavish hand. Some are worldly-wise, others show how highly Truth was valued,
\nothers again for tenderness and the spirit of forgiveness would compare
\nfavourably with the wise sayings of any language in the world. As specimens we
\ntranslate a few at random:-<\/p>\n

            Men full of guile and guileless people, good and bad men, may
\nall become friends; therefore, friendship is no measure of equality.<\/font><\/p>\n


\n    Desire is endless; contentment is the best happiness.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

    Death is to me less fearful than the Untruth.<\/p>\n

    The four Vedas carefully studied are equal to a single Truth. <\/p>\n

    The earth and the sky are full of life; there is no space in which living
\ncreatures are not.<\/p>\n

    The control of the senses is a wholesome fast.<\/p>\n

    Ignorant people mistake anger for strength; he who keeps
\nhimself free from all anger is, of a truth, strong.<\/p>\n

    If spent ceaselessly even the Himalayas would be exhausted. 
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

   
\nDoubt is the source of all mischief; all work undertaken without any hesitation
\nor doubt is crowned with success. 
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

   
\nIf a man kill another by whom he has been deceived and goes
\nto hell for his sin, even hell is to him as welcome as heaven. 
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

   
\nGather wisdom from the ravings of the insane and the babble of
\nchildren even as gold is gathered from rocky ore.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

   
\nHe who is aware of his own faults and is ashamed of them is
\nqualified to be the teacher of the world.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

   
\nAs age deprives woman of her beauty so the absence of
\nhumility deprives man of his attractiveness.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>If
\none man were to possess all the grain, all the gold, all the
\ncattle and all the women in the world yet he would not be content.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n


\n    <\/span>Error is death and
\nfreedom from error is life.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n


\n    <\/span>As dogs fight over
\nmeat so kings fight for the possession of
\nthe world. 
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

   
\n<\/span>The wise mourn neither the living nor the dead.<\/p>\n

    <\/span>So long as a
\nman’s good deeds are remembered on earth, so
\nlong is he esteemed in heaven.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

   
\n<\/span>Each separate burning brand emits smoke, but when put
\ntogether they burst into a blaze.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

   
\n<\/span>Anger towards children, the old, and the suffering should be
\ncontrolled. 
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

   
\n<\/span>If one who is the lord of wealth happen to be the stave of his
\nsenses he and his wealth soon part company.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

   
\n<\/span>Jealousy is the strength of the wicked, punishment of evil-doers is the strength of kings, ministration to suffering is the strength of
\nwomen, and forgiveness is the strength of the wise. 
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

   
\n<\/span>When the wealth, beauty, heroism, birth, happiness, good fortune, and
\nhospitality of one man excite the envy of another the pain and trouble of the
\nenvious man are endless. 
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

    
\n<\/span>The seeker after pleasure must abandon knowledge and the
\nseeker after knowledge must abandon pleasure. <\/p>\n

     It is in the nature of men to
\nfancy that they are respected by all men.<\/p>\n

      <\/span>No
\none can quench indolence by sleep, fire by fuel, and thirst by wine.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

   
\n <\/span>What can be more wonderful than the fact that in spite of
\ndeaths happening every day before their eyes the survivors think that for them
\nthere is no death!<\/p>\n

     <\/span>There are many
\ngateways of religion. In whatsoever manner the path of religion is earnestly followed it always leads to the
\nsame result.
\n
\n     <\/span>The man
\nwho applies sandal-paste to my right hand and he who cuts off my left hand with an axe are equal in my eyes. <\/p>\n
