\nTHE FIFTH HYMN TO AGNI <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

\nA HYMN OF THE SUMMONING OF
\nTHE GODS <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n[The hymn calls to the sacrifice by the
\nsummons of the divine Flame the principal godheads. Each is described or invoked
\nin that capacity and functioning in which he is needed and helpful to the
\nperfection of the soul and its divine growth and attaining.]<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

  1. \n

    \n\tTo the Will that knoweth all the births,
    \n\tto the Flame highly kindled, purely luminous offer a poignant clarity.<\/font>
    \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n

  2. \n

    \n\tThis is he that expresses the powers of
    \n\tthe gods, the untameable who speeds on its way this our sacrifice, this is
    \n\tthe seer who comes with the wine of sweetness in his hands.<\/font>
    \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n

  3. \n

    \n\tO Strength, we have sought thee with our
    \n\tadoration, bring hither the God-Mind<\/font>\u00b9 <\/font>bright
    \n\tand dear in his happy chariots<\/font>\u00b2<\/font> 
    \n\tfor our increasing.<\/font> <\/font><\/li>\n

  4. \n

    \n\tWidely spread thyself,<\/font>\u00b3<\/font>
    \n\tsoftly, thickly covering; towards thee lighten the voices of our
    \n\tillumination. Be white and bright in us that we may conquer.<\/font>
    \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n

  5. \n

    \n\tSwing open, O ye Doors divine.<\/font>4<\/font><\/sup>
    \n\tAnd give us easy passage for our expanding; farther, farther lead and fill
    \n\tour sacrifice.<\/font> <\/font><\/li>\n

  6. \n

    \n\tDarkness and Dawn<\/font>5<\/font><\/sup>
    \n\twe desire, two mighty Mothers of the<\/font>
    \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \n\u00b9<\/font>Indra. <\/font><\/p>\n

    \n\u00b2<\/font>The
    \nplural is used to indicate the manifold movement of the Divine Mind in its
    \ncompleteness. <\/font><\/p>\n

    \n\u00b3<\/font>This
    \nverse is addressed to Indra, the Power of divine Mind, through whom comes the
    \nillumination of the supramental Truth; by the advancing chariots of this giver
    \nof Light we conquer our divine possessions. <\/font><\/p>\n

    \n4<\/sup> Man’s sacrifice is his labour
    \nand aspiration Godwards and is represented as travelling through the opening
    \ndoors of the concealed heavenly realms, kingdoms conquered in succession by the
    \nexpanding soul. <\/font><\/p>\n

    \n5<\/sup> Night and Day, symbols of the
    \nalternation of the divine and human consciousness in us. The Night of our ordinary consciousness holds
    \nand prepares all that the Dawn brings out into conscious being. <\/font><\/p>\n

    \nTruth, fairly fronting us, increasers of our
    \nspacious being.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

    1. \n

      \n\tAnd O ye divine Priests of our humanity,
      \n\tO worshipped Twain, approach on the paths of the Life-breath to this our
      \n\tsacrifice.<\/font> <\/font><\/li>\n

    2. \n

      \n\tShe of the vision of knowledge, she of
      \n\tits flowing inspiration, she of its vastness, three goddesses\u00b9 who give
      \n\tbirth to the Bliss, they who stumble not,\u00b2 may they take their seats at the
      \n\taltar strewn of the sacrifice.<\/font> <\/font>\n\t<\/li>\n

    3. \n

      \n\tO Fashioner of things,\u00b3 beneficent
      \n\thither come to us; pervader of all in thy being, in thy nourishing of all
      \n\tand with thyself,<\/font>4<\/font><\/sup>
      \n\tin sacrifice after sacrifice foster our ascension.<\/font>
      \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n

    4. \n

      \n\tO Master of Delight<\/font>5<\/font><\/sup> to that goal<\/font>6<\/font><\/sup> where
      \n\tthou knowest the secret Names of the gods, thither lead our offerings.<\/font>
      \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n

    5. \n

      \n\tSwaha to the Will and to the Lord of
      \n\tWideness,<\/font>7<\/font><\/sup> Swaha to the God-Mind and to the Thought-Power,<\/font>8<\/font><\/sup> Swaha to the
      \n\tgodheads be the food of our oblation.<\/font>9<\/font><\/sup>
      \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \n\t\u00b9<\/font>Ila, Saraswati, Mahi; their names are translated
      \nin order to give the idea of their functions. <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n\t\u00b2<\/font>Or, who are not assailed, cannot be
      \nattacked by the ignorance and darkness, cause of our suffering. <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n\t\u00b3<\/font>Twashtri. <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n4<\/sup>The Divine as the Fashioner of things pervades
      \nall that He fashions both with His immutable self-existence and with that
      \nmutable becoming of Himself in things by which the soul seems to grow and
      \nincrease and take on new forms. By the former He is the indwelling Lord and
      \nMaker, by the latter He is the material of his own works. <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n5<\/sup> Soma. <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n6<\/sup> The Ananda, the state of
      \ndivine Beatitude in which all the powers of our being are revealed in their perfect godhead, here
      \nsecret and hidden from us. <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n7<\/sup> Varuna. <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n8<\/sup> The Maruts, nervous or vital forces of our being
      \nwhich attain to conscious expression in the thought, singers of the hymn to
      \nIndra, the God-Mind. <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n9<\/sup>That is, let all in us that we offer to the
      \ndivine Life be turned into the self-light and self\\force of the divine Nature.
      \n<\/font><\/p>\n
