\nTHE NINTH HYMN TO AGNI <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/b> <\/p>\n

\nDIVINE WILL ASCENDENT FROM THE ANIMAL TO MENTALITY <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n[The Rishi speaks of the birth of the divine Will by the
\nworking of the pure mental on the material consciousness, its
\ninvolved action in man’s ordinary state of mortal mind emotional, nervous, passionate marked by crooked activities and
\nperishable enjoyments and its emergence on the third plane of
\nour being where it is forged and sharpened into a clear and
\neffective power for liberation and spiritual conquest. It knows all
\nthe births or planes of our existence and leads the sacrifice and its
\nofferings by a successive and continuous progress to the divine
\ngoal and home.]<\/font><\/p>\n

    \n\tThee the godhead mortals with the oblation seek,
    \n\tO Will;<\/font> on thee I meditate who knowest the births; therefore thou
    \nearnest to the goal our offerings without a break.<\/font> <\/li>\n

  2. \n

    \n\tWill is the priest of the oblation for
    \n\tman who gives the offering and forms the seat of sacrifice and attains to his home;<\/font>
    \n\tfor in him our works of sacrifice converge and in him our plenitudes of the Truth’s inspirations.<\/font>\n\t<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    \n\tTrue too it is that thou art born from the two Workings<\/font>\u00b9<\/font>
    \nlike a new-born infant, thou who art the upholder of the
    \nhuman peoples. Will that leads aright the sacrifice.<\/font> <\/li>\n

  4. \n

    \n\tTrue too it is that thou art hard to
    \n\tseize as a son of crookednesses<\/font>\u00b2<\/font> when thou devourest the many growths of delight
    \nlike an Animal that feeds in his pasture.<\/font> <\/li>\n

  5. \n

    \n\tBut afterwards thy fiery rays with their smoky passion meet<\/font>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \n\u00b9<\/font>The two Aranis or tinders
    \nby which the fire is struck out; the word can also mean workings and is related to arya.<\/i> Heaven and Earth are the two Aranis which produce Agni; Heaven
    \nhis father. Earth his mother.<\/font><\/p>\n

    \n\u00b2<\/font>Literally, of the crooked ones, possibly the seven rivers or movements of our being
    \nwinding through the obstructions of our mortal existence.<\/font><\/p>\n

    \ntogether entirely; oh then, the third Soul<\/font>\u00b9<\/font> forges him in our
    \nheavens like a smith in his smithy; ’tis as if in the smith him-
    \nself that he whets him into a weapon of sharpness.<\/font>\u00b2<\/font><\/p>\n

      \n\tO Will, may I by thy expandings and thy expressings of the
      \nLord of Love, \u2014 yea, may we, as men assailed by enemies,
      \nso besieged by discords, pass through and beyond these
      \nstumblings of mortals.<\/font> <\/li>\n

    2. \n

      \n\tBring to us human souls that felicity, O Will, thou forceful
      \none! May he shoot us forward on our path, may he nourish
      \nand increase us and be in us for the conquest of the plenitude. March with us in our battles that we may grow.<\/font>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \n\u00b9<\/font>Trita
      \nāptya,<\/i> the Third or Triple, apparently the Purusha of the mental plane. In the
      \ntradition he is a Rishi and has two companions significantly named eka,<\/i> one or single, and
      \ndvita,<\/i> second or double, who must be the Purushas of the material and the vital or dynamic
      \nconsciousness. In the Veda he seems rather to be a god.<\/font><\/p>\n

      \n\u00b2<\/font>The original is very compressed in style and suggestion beyond even the<\/i> common Vedic
      \npregnancy of structure and phrase, "When, oh, him Trita forges in heaven like a smith,
      \nsharpens as in the smith". <\/b> In English we have to expand in order to bring out the meaning.<\/font><\/p>\n
