\nTHE TWELFTH HYMN TO AGNI <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/b> <\/p>\n

\nA HYMN OF MAN’S ASPIRATION TO THE TRUTH <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n[The Rishi invokes this flame of the Divine Force, this
\nvast Lord of the superconscient Truth, this Truth-conscious
\nOne, to accept thought and word into himself, become Truth-conscient in man and cleave out the many streams of the Truth.
\nNot by mere force of effort nor under the law of the duality can
\nthe Truth be attained, but by the Truth itself. But there, are not
\nonly powers of this Force that battle with the falsehood and
\nguard and conquer, there are others also who have helped so far
\nin the march, but who would keep to the foundation of the
\nfalsehood because they cling to the present self-expression of man
\nand refuse to advance beyond it; these in their self-will speak
\nthe word of crookedness to the Truth-seeker. By the sacrifice and
\nby submission in the sacrifice man, the ever-advancing pilgrim,
\nbrings near to him his wide dwelling-place beyond, the seat and
\nhome of the Truth.]<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

    \n\tTo Will, master of sacrifice, the Mighty One, the vast lord
    \nand diffuser of the Truth I bring forward my thought as an
    \noffering and it is as the clarified butter of the sacrifice purified in the mouth of the flame; my word<\/font>\u00b9<\/font> I bring forward
    \nthat goes to meet its lord.<\/font>\u00b2<\/font><\/li>\n

  2. \n

    \n\tO conscious seer of the Truth, the Truth alone perceive in
    \nmy consciousness; cleave out\u00b3 many flowing streams of the
    \nTruth.<\/font>4<\/font><\/sup> Not by force, nor by the duality can I achieve the
    \njourney nor attain to the Truth of the shining Worker, the
    \nfertilising Lord.<\/font> <\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \n\u00b9<\/font>To turn thought and word into form and expression of the superconscient Truth which
    \nis hidden beyond the division and duality of the mental and physical existence was the central
    \nidea of the Vedic discipline and the foundation of its mysteries.<\/font>
    \n<\/font><\/p>\n

    \n\u00b2<\/font>The Bull; the thought is symbolised as the shining cow fronting and offering itself to
    \nthe Godhead.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

    \n\u00b3<\/font>From the rock in the hill where they are guarded by the opposing powers.<\/font>
    \n<\/font><\/p>\n

    \n4<\/sup> The descent of the superconscient into our life was imaged as the rain of heaven; it
    \nformed the seven celestial rivers that flow down upon the earth-consciousness.<\/font>
    \n<\/font><\/p>\n

    1. \n

      \n\tBy what thought in me,  O Will, shalt thou seeking the
      \nTruth by the Truth become the impeller to knowledge of a
      \nnew word ? The godhead who guards the times and seasons<\/font>\u00b9<\/font>
      \nof the Truth, knows all in me, but him I know not, the lord
      \nof that all-possessing felicity.<\/font> <\/font>\n\t<\/li>\n

    2. \n

      \n\tWho are they,  O Will, that are thy binders of the Enemy?
      \nwho are the shining ones, the guardians, the seekers after
      \npossession and conquest? Who,  O Will, protect the foundations of the falsehood ? who are the keepers of a present<\/font>\u00b2<\/font>
      \nword?<\/font> <\/font><\/li>\n

    3. \n

      \n\tThese are comrades of thine,  O Will, who have gone astray
      \nfrom thee; benignant were they, they have become malignant. These do violence to
      \n\tthemselves by their words speaking crooked things to the seeker after straightness.<\/font>
      \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n

    4. \n

      \n\tBut he,  O Will, who desires with submission thy sacrifice,
      \nguards the truth of the shining Worker, the Fertiliser.<\/font>\u00b3<\/font> To
      \nhim may there come that wide habitation<\/font>4<\/font><\/sup> in which all is
      \nperfected, even that which is left<\/font>5<\/font><\/sup> for man the pilgrim to
      \naccomplish in his forward journeying.<\/font> <\/font>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \n\u00b9<\/font>The periods, sometimes described as years, sometimes as the twelve symbolic months
      \nof the progress of the sacrifice.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n\u00b2<\/font>Or, "false word". In either case it means the old falsehood as opposed, to the "new
      \nword" of the Truth of which Agni has to create the knowledge.<\/font>
      \n<\/font><\/p>\n

      \n\u00b3<\/font>"The shining Bull or Male", but the latter word means also the rainer, fertiliser or
      \ndiffuser of abundance and sometimes the strong and abundant, the former seems to bear also
      \nthe sense of active or moving.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n4<\/sup>The plane of the superconscient Truth or world of Swar beyond mental Heaven and
      \nphysical earth in which all is accomplished that here we strive after; it is described as the
      \nwide habitation and the wide and fear-free pasture of the shining cows.<\/font>
      \n<\/font><\/p>\n

      \n5<\/sup> This world is sometimes described as what is left or the excess; it is the additional field
      \nof being beyond this triplicity of mind, life and body which constitute our normal state of
      \nexistence.<\/font> <\/font> <\/p>\n
