Vast the wisdom of Varuna,<br \/>\nof Mitra, as in a happy brightness, orders multitudinously<br \/>\nthe Light.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font size=\"2\">Page <font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 282<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><b>COMMENTARY<\/b><\/font><b><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"4\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">Surya Savitri in his task of illumination follows the progress of<br \/>\nthe Dawn. In another hymn the movements of the mind have<br \/>\nbeen described as growing conscient and brilliant by the bright<br \/>\npower of the continuous Dawns. Throughout the Veda Usha,<br \/>\ndaughter of Heaven, has always the same function. She is the<br \/>\nmedium of the awakening, the activity and the growth of the<br \/>\nother gods; she is the first condition of the Vedic realisation. By<br \/>\nher increasing illumination the whole nature of man is clarified;<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">through her he arrives at the Truth, through her he enjoys the<br \/>\nBeatitude. The divine dawn of the Rishis is the advent of the<br \/>\ndivine Light throwing off veil after veil and revealing in man&#8217;s<br \/>\nactivities the luminous godhead. In that light the Work is done,<br \/>\nthe sacrifice offered and its desirable fruits gathered by humanity.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">Many are the hymns, indeed, in which rich and beautiful<br \/>\nfigures of the earthly dawn veil this inner truth of the goddess<br \/>\nUsha, but in this hymn of the great Rishi Vishwamitra the psychological symbolism of the Vedic Dawn is apparent from<br \/>\nbeginning to end by open expressions and on the surface of the<br \/>\nthought. &quot;O Dawn rich of store in thy substance,&quot; he cries to her,<br \/>\n&quot;conscient cleave to the affirmation of him who expresses thee, O thou who hast the plenitudes.&quot; The word <i>pracetas<\/i> and the<br \/>\nrelated word, <i>vicetas,<\/i> are standing terms of Vedic phraseology;<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">they seem to correspond to the ideas expressed in later language<br \/>\nby the <i>Vedsmtic praj\u00f1&#257;na<\/i> and <i>vij\u00f1&#257;na.<\/i> Prajnana is the conscious&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nness that cognizes all things as objects confronting its observation; in the divine mind it is knowledge regarding things as their<br \/>\nsource, possessor and witness. Vijnana is comprehensive know&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nledge containing, penetrating into things, pervading them in<br \/>\nconsciousness by a sort of identification with their truth. Usha<br \/>\nis to occupy the revealing thought and word of the Rishi as a<br \/>\npower of Knowledge conscient of the truth of all that is placed<br \/>\nby them before the mind for expression in man. The affirmation,<br \/>\nit is suggested, will be full and ample; for Usha is <i>v&#257;jena v&#257;jini,<br \/>\nmaghoni;<\/i> rich is the store of her substance; she has all the<br \/>\nplenitudes.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font size=\"2\">Page <font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 283<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">This dawn moves in her progression always according to<br \/>\nthe rule of a divine action; many are the thoughts she brings in<br \/>\nthat motion, but her steps are sure and all desirable things, all<br \/>\nsupreme boons, the boons of the Ananda, the blessings of the divine existence, \u2014 are in her hands. She is ancient and eternal,<br \/>\nthe dawn of the Light that was from the beginning, <i>pur&#257;n&#803;i,<\/i> but in<br \/>\nher coming she is ever young and fresh to the soul that receives<br \/>\nher.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">She is to shine wide, she that is the divine Dawn, as the light<br \/>\nof the immortal existence bringing out in man the powers or the<br \/>\nvoices of Truth and Joy, <i>(s&#363;nr&#803;t&#257;h&#803;, \u2014<\/i> a word which expresses at<br \/>\nonce both the true and the pleasant); for is not the chariot of her<br \/>\nmovement a car at once of light and of happiness ? For again,<br \/>\nthe word <i>candra<\/i> in <i>candrarath&#257;, \u2014<\/i> signifying also the lunar<br \/>\ndeity Soma, lord of the delight of immortality pouring into man, <i>&#257;nanda<\/i> and <i>amr&#803;ta,<\/i> \u2014means both luminous and blissful. And<br \/>\nthe horses that bring her, figure of the nervous forces that sup&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nport and carry forward all our action, must be perfectly con&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\ntrolled; golden, bright in hue, their nature (for in this ancient<br \/>\nsymbolism colour is the sign of quality, of character, of temperament) must be a dynamism of ideal knowledge in its concentrated luminousness; wide in its extension must be the mass of<br \/>\nthat concentrated force, \u2014<i>pr&#803;thup&#257;jaso ye.<\/i><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">Divine Dawn comes thus to the soul with the light of her<br \/>\nknowledge, <i>praj\u00f1&#257;na,<\/i> confronting all the worlds as field of that<br \/>\nknowledge, \u2014 all provinces, that is to say, of our universal<br \/>\nbeing, \u2014 mind, vitality, physical consciousness. She stands up&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nlifted over them on our heights above mind, in the highest<br \/>\nheaven, as the perception of Immortality<b> <\/b> or of the Immortal,<br \/>\n<i>amr&#803;tasya ketuh&#803;,<\/i> revealing in them the eternal and beatific existence or the eternal all-blissful Godhead. So exalted she stands<br \/>\nprepared to effect the motion of the divine knowledge, progressing as a new revelation of the eternal truth, <i>navyasi,<\/i> in their<br \/>\nharmonised and equalised activities like a wheel moving smoothly<br \/>\nover a level field; for they now, their diversities and discords re&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\nmoved, offer no obstacle to that equal motion.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">In her plenitude she separates, as it were, and casts down<br \/>\nfrom her the elaborately sewn garment that covered the truth of<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font size=\"2\">Page <font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 284<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">things and moves as the wife of the Lover, the energy of her<br \/>\nall-blissful Lord, <i>svasarasya patn&#299;.<\/i> Full in her enjoyment of the<br \/>\nfelicity, full in her effectuation of all activities, <i>subhag&#257; sudams&#257;h&#803;,,<br \/>\n<\/i>she brings into existence in us by her revelations Swar, the concealed luminous mind, our highest mental heaven; and thus from<br \/>\nthe farthest extremities of mental being extends herself over the<br \/>\nphysical consciousness.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">As this divine Dawn pours out widely its light upon them,<br \/>\nso have men by submission to the law other divine act and movement to bring forward for her the fully energised completeness of<br \/>\ntheir being and their capacities as a vehicle for her light or as a<br \/>\nseat for her sacrificial activities.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">The Rishi then dwells on the two capital works of the divine<br \/>\nDawn in man, \u2014 her elevation of him to the full force of the<br \/>\nLight and the revelation of the Truth and her pouring of the<br \/>\nAnanda, the Amrita, the Soma-wine, the bliss of the immortal<br \/>\nbeing into the mental and bodily existence. In the world of the pure mind, <i>divi,<\/i> she rises into the full force and mass of the Light,<br \/>\n<i>&#363;rdhvam p&#257;jo a&#347;ret,<\/i> and from those pure and high levels she<br \/>\nestablishes the sweetness, <i>madhu,<\/i> the honey of Soma. She makes<br \/>\nto shine out the three luminous worlds, <i>rocan&#257;;<\/i> she is then or she<br \/>\nbrings with her the beatific vision. By the effectual illuminations<br \/>\nof the pure mentality, through the realising Word, <i>divo arkaih&#803;.,<br \/>\n<\/i>she is perceived as the bearer of Truth and with the Truth she<br \/>\nenters from the world above Mind, full of the delight, in a varied<br \/>\nplay of her multiple thought and activity, into the mental and<br \/>\nbodily consciousness, those established limits between which<br \/>\nman&#8217;s action moves. It is from her, as she comes thus richly<br \/>\nladen, <i>v&#257;jena v&#257;jini,<\/i> that Agni, the divine Force labouring here in<br \/>\nbody and mind to uplift the mortal, prays for and attains to the<br \/>\nSoma, the wine of the Beatitude, the delightful substance.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">The supramental world in us, foundation of the Truth, is<br \/>\nthe foundation of the Dawns. They are the descent upon mortal<br \/>\nnature of the light of that immortal Truth, <i>rtamjyotih.<\/i> The Lord<br \/>\nof the Dawns, Master of Truth, Illuminer, Creator, Organiser,<br \/>\nputting forth in the foundation of Truth, above mind, the impulsion of his activities, enters with them by this goddess into a<br \/>\nbodily and mental existence no longer obscured but released from<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<font size=\"2\">Page <font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u2013 285<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">their limits and capable of vastness, <i>mah&#299;<br \/>\nrodas&#299;.<\/i> The Lord of<br \/>\nTruth is the sole Lord of things. He is Varuna, soul of vastness<br \/>\nand purity; he is Mitra, source of love and light and harmony.<br \/>\nHis creative Wisdom, <i>mah&#299;&nbsp; mitrasya varun&#803;asya m&#257;y&#257;,<\/i> unlimited<br \/>\nin its scope, \u2014 for he is Varuna, \u2014 appearing, <i>candreva,<\/i> as a<br \/>\nlight of bliss and joy, \u2014 for he is Mitra, \u2014 arranges, perfectly<br \/>\norganises, in multitudinous forms, in the wideness of the liberated nature, the luminous expansions, the serene expressions of<br \/>\nthe Truth. He combines the various brilliancies with which his<br \/>\nDawn has entered our firmaments; he blends into one harmony<br \/>\nher true and happy voices.<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" style=\"line-height: 150%;margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0\">\n<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">Dawn divine is the coming of the Godhead.
