\nTHE FIRST HYMN TO MITRA-VARUNA <\/b><\/font> <\/p>\n

\nTHE LORDS OF THE THOUSAND-PILLARED <\/b><\/font><\/p>\n

\nHOME OF TRUTH AND BLISS <\/b><\/font><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\n[The Rishi hymns the eternal and immutable Truth of which
\nthe Truth in mutable things is the veil; that is the goal of the journey of the
\nmanifested Sun of divine knowledge; it is the
\neternal unity of all things that are and the supreme Divine of
\nwhich the Gods are various forms. Into it unite all the wealth of
\nbeing and knowledge and power and bliss won by the sacrifice.
\nIt is the large vastness of the wide purities of Varuna and of the
\nshining harmonies of Mitra. There, eternally stable, dwell the
\nherds of the divine radiances of knowledge; for that is the happy
\nfield to which they here are travelling. The Impeller of the cosmic
\nmovement and journey pours out knowledge in us, the milk of
\nthe herds, by the dawns of the inner light and there descend the
\nstreams of the immortal existence followed by the single and
\nperfect movement of Mitra-Varuna, the Light and the Purity,
\nthe Harmony and the Infinity. It is the rain of heaven which these
\ntwo Godheads pour down, upholding the physical existence in
\nits fruits and the celestial in its herding radiances of illumination.
\nThey thus create in man a force full of divine knowledge and a
\nwide being which they guard and increase, a strewn seat for the
\nsacrifice. This thousand-pillared force of knowledge they make a
\nhome for themselves and dwell there in the revelations of the
\nWord. It is luminous in its form and its pillars of life have an iron
\nstrength and stability. They ascend to it in the dawning, in the
\nrising of the Sun of knowledge and look with that eye of their
\ndivine vision on the infinite existence and the finite, the indivisible
\nunity of things and their multiplicity. It is a home full and large
\nwith the sweetness and ecstasy of the supreme and inviolable
\npeace and bliss which by their cherishing and fostering protection
\nwe seek to conquer and possess.]<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

    \n\tBy the Truth<\/font>\u00b9<\/font>
    \n\tis veiled that ever-standing Truth of yours where they unyoke the horses of
    \n\tthe Sun;<\/font>\u00b2<\/font>
    \n\tthere the ten hundreds<\/font>\u00b3<\/font>
    \n\tstand still together; That One, \u2014I have beheld the greatest of the embodied
    \n\tgods.<\/font>4 <\/font><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \n\tThat is the utter vastness of you, O
      \n\tMitra and Varuna; there the Lord of the movement milks the herds of his
      \n\tstable radiances by the days. Lo, you twain swell all the streams of the
      \n\tBlissful One and your one wheel<\/font>5
      \n\t<\/font><\/sup>moves in their path.<\/font>
      \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \n\tYou uphold earth and heaven, O Mitra
        \n\tKing and King Varuna, by your greatnesses; you increase the growths of
        \n\tearth, you nourish the shining herds of heaven, you pour forth the rain of
        \n\tits waters, O swift in strength.<\/font> <\/font>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \n <\/font><\/p>\n

          \n

          \n\tLet horses perfectly yoked with their
          \n\twell-governed reins of light bear you down to us; the form of the clarity
          \n\tfollows in<\/font> <\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          \n\u00b9The active cosmic Truth of things
          \ndiffused and arranged in their mutability and divisibility of Time and Space
          \nveils the eternal and unchanging Truth of which it is a manifestation. <\/font>
          \n<\/font><\/p>\n

          \n\u00b2<\/font>The
          \neternal Truth is the goal of the divine Light which arises <\/b>in us and
          \njourneys upward into higher and higher heavens through the shining upper ocean.
          \n<\/font><\/p>\n

          \n\u00b3<\/font>The
          \nentire plenitude of the divine wealth in its outpourings of knowledge, force and
          \njoy. <\/font><\/p>\n

          \n4<\/sup> The One, the Deva veiled by
          \nhis form of the divine Sun. Cf. Isha Upanishad, "That splendour which is thy
          \nfairest form, O Sun, that let me behold. The Purusha who is there and there. He
          \nam I." <\/font><\/p>\n

          \n5<\/sup> The unified movement, when
          \nthe lower wheel of the Sun is struck away: the inferior truth is taken up into
          \nthe unity of the higher truth from which it now seems to be separate in its
          \nmotion. <\/font> \n<\/p>\n

          \nyour coming and the Rivers flow in the front of heaven.<\/font>
          \n<\/font><\/p>\n

            \n\tIncreasing the strength that conies to our ear of knowledge,
            \nguarding by the sacrificial word<\/font>\u00b9<\/font> your wide realm<\/font>\u00b2<\/font> as if our
            \nseat of .sacrifice, bringing obeisance, holding fast to judgment, you take your seat in your home,
            \n\tO Mitra, within the
            \nrevealings of knowledge, O Varuna.<\/font> <\/font>\n\t<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              \n\tWith hands that spare not, protectors of the beyond for the
              \ndoer of perfect works whom you deliver and he dwells within
              \nthe revealings of knowledge, kings free from passion, together you uphold a thousand-pillared strength.<\/font>
              \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                \n\tIts form is of golden light, iron is its pillar and shines in
                \n, heaven as if the swift lightning;<\/font>\u00b3<\/font> in the happy field<\/font>4<\/font><\/sup> it is
                \nshaped or in the field of the gleaming.<\/font>5<\/font><\/sup>
                \n\tMay we win possession of the sweet honey<\/font>6<\/font><\/sup> which is in that home.<\/font>
                \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  \n\tTo that home whose form is of the gold, whose pillars are
                  \nof the iron, in the breaking of the Dawn, in the uprising of the<\/font>
                  \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  \n\u00b9<\/font>Yajur. The Rik is the word which brings with it the illumination, the Yajur the word
                  \nwhich guides the sacrificial action in accordance with the Rik. <\/font><\/p>\n

                  \n\u00b2<\/font>Or, "increasing and guarding the wide strength". <\/font><\/p>\n

                  \n\u00b3<\/font>Or, "the Mare", the energy of the Horse of Life. <\/font><\/p>\n

                  \n4<\/sup>The Ananda, the Bliss-World. <\/font><\/p>\n

                  \n5<\/sup>The field of the gleaming of the Dawns, the world of the Light. <\/font><\/p>\n

                  \n6<\/sup>Madhu, the Soma. <\/font><\/p>\n

                  \nSun you ascend, O Varuna, O Mitra, and thence you behold

                    \n\tThat bliss of yours which is most large and full and without
                    \na gap, O strong guardians of the world, so that none can
                    \npierce through and beyond it, by that cherish us, Mitra and
                    \nVaruna; may we be victorious, who would take possession
                    \nof that peace. .<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
