\nTHE SEVENTH HYMN TO AGNI <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/b> <\/p>\n

\nTHE DIVINE WILL, DESIRER, ENJOYER, PROGRESSIVE FROM THE ANIMAL TO BLISS AND KNOWLEDGE <\/font><\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

\nAgni is hymned as the divine Force that brings the bliss and
\nthe ray of the truth into the human being and light into the
\nnight of our darkness. He leads men in their labour to his own
\ninfinite levels; he enjoys and tears up the objects of earthly enjoyment, but all his multitude of desires are for the building of
\nan universality, an all-embracing enjoyment in the divine home
\nof the human being. He is the animal moving as the enjoyer by
\nthe progressive movement of Nature, as with an axe through the
\nforest, to the achievement and the bliss. This passionate, emotional, animal being of man is given by him to be purified into
\nthe peace and bliss; in it he establishes a divine light and know-ledge and the awakened state of the soul.]<\/font>
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

    \n\tO comrades, in you an absolute force of impulsion and an
    \nutter affirming for the Strength that lavishes all his abundance on the worlds of our dwelling,<\/font>\u00b9<\/font> for the master of
    \nForce, for the son of Energy.<\/font> <\/font><\/li>\n

  2. \n

    \n\tWheresoever man’s soul comes to the utter meeting with
    \nhim, it becomes full of delight in its dwelling-place. Even they who are adepts in the strength continue to kindle the
    \nflame of him and all creatures born work to bring him to
    \nperfect birth.<\/font> <\/font><\/li>\n

  3. \n

    \n\tWhen wholly we possess and enjoy our strengths of impulsion, wholly all that men offer as a sacrifice, then I
    \n\treceive the ray of the Truth in its illumination and shining energy.<\/font>\u00b2<\/font><\/li>\n

  4. \n

    \n\tVerily he creates the light of perception even for one who
    \nsits far off in the night, when himself undecaying the purifier <\/font>
    \n\t <\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \n\u00b9<\/font>Or, "on the dwellers in the world".<\/font><\/p>\n

    \n\u00b2<\/font>Or, "of the light, the luminous force, the truth".<\/font>
    \n<\/font><\/p>\n

    \ncompresses the lords<\/font>\u00b9<\/font> of the woodland of delight.<\/font>
    \n<\/font><\/p>\n

      \n\tWhen in his circling men cast the sweat<\/font>\u00b2<\/font> of their toil as an
      \noffering on the paths, then they ascend to him where he sitsself-joyous<\/font>\u00b3<\/font>
      \n\tlike climbers who arrive upon large levels.<\/font>4
      \n\t<\/font><\/sup><\/li>\n

    2. \n

      \n\t Him shall mortal man come to know as the godhead who
      \nhas this multitude of his desires that he may establish in us the all; for he reaches forward to the sweet taste of all
      \nfoods and he builds a home<\/font>5<\/font><\/sup> for this human being.<\/font>
      \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n

    3. \n

      \n\tYea, he teareth to pieces this desert<\/font>6<\/font><\/sup> in which we dwell as
      \nthe Animal that teareth its food; the beard of this Beast is of the golden light, his fang is a purity and the force in him
      \nis not afflicted by his heats.<\/font> <\/font><\/li>\n

    4. \n

      \n\tPure indeed is he for whom as for the eater of things there
      \nis the flowing progression by Nature<\/font>7<\/font><\/sup> as by an axe, and with
      \na happy travail she, his Mother, brought him forth that he
      \nmay accomplish her works and taste of the enjoyment.<\/font>8<\/font><\/sup>
      \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \n\u00b9<\/font>Vanaspatin,<\/i> in its double sense, the trees, the lords of the forest, growths of the earth,
      \nour material existence, and lords of delight. Soma, producer of the immortalising wine, is the
      \ntypical vanaspati.<\/i><\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n\u00b2<\/font>An equivoque on the double sense of the word, sweat and the rich droppings of the
      \nfood-offering.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n\u00b3<\/font>Or, "self-victorious".<\/font>
      \n<\/font><\/p>\n

      \n4<\/sup> These are the wide free infinite planes of existence founded on the Truth, the open
      \nlevels opposed elsewhere to the uneven crookednesses which shut in men limiting their vision and
      \nobstructing their journey.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n5<\/sup> The home of man, the higher divine world of his existence which is being formed by
      \nthe gods in his being through the sacrifice. This home is the complete Beatitude into which all human desires and enjoyings have to be transformed and lose themselves. Therefore Agni,
      \nthe purifier, devours all the forms of material existence and enjoyment in order to reduce
      \nthem to their divine equivalent.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n6<\/sup> The material existence not watered by the streams or rivers which descend from the
      \nsuperconscient Bliss and Truth.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n7<\/sup>Again an equivoque on the double sense of svadhiti,<\/i> an axe or other cleaving
      \ninstrument and the self-ordering power of Nature, svadhā..<\/i> The image is of the progress of the divine
      \nForce through the forests of the material existence as with an axe. But the axe is the natural self-arranging progression of Nature, the World-Energy, the Mother from whom this divine
      \nForce, son of Energy, is born.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

      \n8<\/sup> The divine enjoyment, bhaga,<\/i> typified by the god Bhaga, the Enjoyer in the power of
      \nthe Truth.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

        \n\tO strength, O presser out on us of the
        \n\trunning richness, when thou findest one who is a glad peace<\/font>\u00b9<\/font>
        \n\tfor the establishing of thy works, in such mortals illumination establish
        \n\tand inspired knowledge and the conscious soul.<\/font>
        \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n

      2. \n

        \n\tFor to this end I born in the material
        \n\texistence receive as thy gift the emotional mind and the animal being.<\/font>\u00b2<\/font> Yea,
        \n\tO Will, may the eater of things overpower the Dividers<\/font>\u00b3 <\/font>
        \n\twho minister not to his fullness; these
        \n\tsouls that rush upon him with their impulsions may he overcome.<\/font>
        \n\t<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \n\u00b9<\/font>am<\/font><\/i> and <\/font>
        \nŚ<\/i><\/font>arma<\/i>
        \nin the Veda express the idea of peace and joy, the joy that comes of the accomplished labour, <\/font>
        \nś<\/i><\/font>ami,<\/i> or work of the sacrifice: the toil of the battle and the journey
        \nfind their rest, a foundation of beatitude is acquired which is already free from the pain of
        \nstrife and effort.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

        \n\u00b2<\/font>Literally, passion-mind and the animal; but the word paśu<\/i> may also mean, as it does
        \noftenest in the Veda, the symbolic Cow of light; in that case the sense will be the emotional
        \nmind and the illumined mind. But the first rendering agrees better with the
        \ngeneral sense of the hymn and with its previous use of the word.<\/font>
        \n<\/font><\/p>\n

        \n\u00b3<\/font>The Dasyus who hack and cut up the growth and unity of the soul and seek to assail
        \nand destroy its divine strength, joy and knowledge. They are powers of Darkness, the sons
        \nof Danu or Diti the divided being.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n
